Maths Fest 2016 Logan Hall, Institute of Education, UCL A maths enrichment day for sixth-form and higher-GCSE staff and students Outcomes: -­‐ Students will have a greater awareness of the wider field of mathematics and be able to describe new applications of maths and areas of mathematical research. -­‐ Students will be equipped with exam study skills and be motivated to use them. -­‐ Staff will gain a deeper understanding of their subject and discover new content to use in their lessons. -­‐ Staff will have several examples of working mathematicians, and applications of their maths, to use in lessons.

Maths Fest 2016 will be hosted by maths teacher Matt Parker who taught in UK schools before working in broadcasting and new-media. He is now the Public Engagement in Mathematics Fellow at Queen Mary University of London. Sessions will be run by: Dr Hannah Fry, UCL maths lecturer in the Mathematics of Cities at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL. She appeared recently on BBC2's Six Degrees and in her own documentary charting the life of Lady Ada Lovelace. Dr James Grime, having worked at Cambridge University’s Millennium Maths Project James tours the world with his code-breaking talk and a genuine WWII Enigma machine. He also invented the Non-transitive Grime Dice. Dr Colin Wright graduated in Pure Mathematics at Monash University, Melbourne, before going on to get a PhD at Cambridge. He is now a director of a company that specializes in software for marine radar, but takes out time to give juggling talks all over the world.

Rob Eastaway studied Engineering at the University of Cambridge and spent several years applying maths as a management consultant for Deloittes. Now a best-selling maths author whose books include the Why Do Buses Come In Threes? and The Hidden Maths of Sport. Rachel Riley studied maths at Oxford before becoming a television presenter. She works as Channel4’s Countdown numbers lady and has a keen interest in promoting maths and science to young people.

There are several nearby tube stations and space for coach drop-off directly outside the venue. All staff and students will be given a free study-guide book which also contains notes about the speakers and their sessions.
