One Solitary Life He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant women. He grew up in an another obscure village where he worked in a carpenter’s shop until he was thirty when public opinion turned against him. He never wrote a book, he never held an office, he never went to college. He never visited a big city, he never travelled more than two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He did none of the things usually associated with greatness, he had no credentials but himself. He was only thirty three, his friends ran away, one of them denied him. He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing, the only property he had on earth. When he was dead he was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. Nineteen centuries have come and gone and today Jesus is the central figure of the human race and the leader of mankind’s progress. All the armies that have ever marched, all the navies that have ever sailed, all the parliaments that have ever sat, all the kings that have ever reigned put together have not affected the life of mankind on earth as powerfully as that one solitary life. Those words were written in 1926 by Dr James Allan Francis. Since that time another century has passed and whilst not everyone would agree that Jesus is the central figure of the human race or the leader of mankind’s progress, the fact is that these words are a factual account of Jesus. We can learn so much from that, One solitary Life. Whatever our religious beliefs, or not, by looking at the life of Jesus whilst he walked the earth all those years ago, can help us to lead a life that is not selfish or greedy, a life where we put others before ourselves, and can sleep peacefully at night knowing that we are in love with our selves, our neighbours and our family. The only way that hurt, hatred and evil can be overcome is by Love, and that must start within ourselves. If you would like to know more about Jesus, the man, do get in touch. Sandra Collier

Archdeacon’s Visitation and Service for the Parish churches of the Okehampton Deanery 7.30pm, Monday 15th May All Saints’ Parish Church, Okehampton The Church of England has many traditions. Every year after all the annual meetings have happened, the Archdeacon holds a Visitation service in each Deanery. The clergy, Readers and churchwardens are expected to attend and the churchwardens are sworn in, as they take up their responsibilities in their parish church. However, it is a service that affirms the role of everyone who has a part in the life and ministry of the church, so is a real encouragement to everyone who comes. It would be lovely to see you all there. May 2017

Home Group and Prayer Group These run fortnightly in various Hatherleigh homes, so please call any of the leaders for further information, if you are interested.

The Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next. Amen.

May 25th-June 4th 2017 Last year the Archbishops of Canterbury and York invited their churches to join them in a week of prayer leading up to Pentecost entitled ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. This year they have repeated the invitation and it has been extended across many different denominations. We are using this as an opportunity to join together in praying for our communities. There will be Prayer Boxes placed in each of the churches during May. These are for anyone to put in their prayers for their churches and communities. These boxes will be taken to the Beacon Prayer Event at the Cathedral at 6.30pm on Pentecost (Sunday 4th June), where they will be placed on a map of Devon demonstrating the many prayers covering our County of Devon. We will also be having prayer events in some of our parishes (see below for details), which are open for anyone to come. If anyone in the community has something that they would like us to pray for or would like more information about any of the events, please contact Rev. Ruth Hansford (Tel: 01837 810 314; Email: [email protected]). Unseen Images from the Beaford Archive

On Sunday 25th June, 2-5pm at the Community Centre, Hatherleigh will see the much-anticipated launch of HIDDEN HISTORIES OF RURAL NORTH DEVON: OPENING UP THE BEAFORD ARCHIVE, a vibrant and unique three-year project for the people of North Devon, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Hidden Histories will digitise around 10,000 unseen black and white images from the extensive James Ravilious and Roger Deakins photographic archives and make these publicly available on a new searchable website. A host of volunteering opportunities are on offer to assist with the digitisation, cataloguing, and preservation of the images, as well as the collection of oral histories from people with special insights into the photographs. Locals and visitors alike are invited to attend NEW PERSPECTIVES – a free event to celebrate the launch of the project. Formerly unseen images from the Archive collections will be on display, shedding new light on our local heritage, and allowing May 2017

attendees to have a first glimpse at a small sample of the 3000 plus contact sheets that will be published online later this year. We look forward to learning more about these and hearing about your knowledge and experience of the familiar places and faces captured on film. Members of the Hidden Histories team will be on hand to share information about the volunteering opportunities available and what to expect in the forthcoming months and years of the project. An Oral Historian will be in attendance and looking for people interested in becoming trained in oral history techniques, to help and support the ongoing collection of stories and memories. From 3:30pm, there will be two talks about the local history and landscape, with details to be confirmed. There will be free refreshments provided throughout, and this event is ‘drop-in’ so no pre -booking is needed. Hidden Histories of rural north Devon: Opening up the Beaford Archive has been further supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Elmgrant Trust, Fullabrook CIC, Leader 5 Torridge and North Devon, and the North Devon Coast Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. missing link between Meeth and Hatherleigh. The route currently follows an interim on road via Sheepwash which is circuitous and hilly, and does not realise the benefit of an off road Trail. Connecting the Tarka Trail to the existing path at Made-Well on to Hatherleigh will better connect this Market town to the strategic cycle network, bringing a range of benefits. Your support is vital in ensuring the missing link in the Tarka Trail is completed. Please sign the online petition via the Notices Page on Hatherleigh.net Alternatively call into Made-Well or shops in Hatherleigh to sign a printed petition. You can show your support further by writing a letter of support, drop off point Made-Well.

Hatherleigh Carnival

Well it’s a very positive start to the years’ Carnival preparations, at the time of going to press (and there are still a few days left before the deadline) but I can reveal the very exciting news that we have at least one Carnival Queen applicant, which is wonderful and I look forward to revealing all the details in next month’s pump. The committee would like to congratulate Linda King (our programme and minutes secretary) her husband Roy and daughter Sophie on the safe arrival of their gorgeous little boy William on March 23rd, we wish them lots of happiness and hope that he will be yet another Carnival fan. As it’s so early in the year I think that’s all we have for you for now, but I’m sure by next month we’ll have started planning fundraising

May 2017

events, and will have details regarding these and this years’ Carnival Queen and President. So, for now I’ll stop ‘talking’ and save my ‘breath’ for ALL the news we’ll have for you next month. Louise Bater

The Bell ringers challenge you TO GIVE IT AGO! So another Wednesday comes and goes and still we see no new blood in the tower. As I stood there ringing tonight I actually found myself questioning why we do it? Yes it’s nice to hear people say how much they enjoy hearing the bells but do they actually consider there is somebody giving their time to make this happen? People are also quick enough to mention that they missed the bells on Sunday or ask why they weren't ringing, the answer was probably simple, we didn’t have enough ringers. As I looked round the tower tonight I realised that two of the seven people there had travelled to be with us, one from Okehampton and one from Launceston. While neither place is the other end of the Earth, it is still a commitment for these people, while people who live the town which benefits from the bells wont even GIVE IT A GO. So why not challenge yourself and come along to the tower on a Wednesday evening to find out what it’s all about, I am confident you will be surprised how enjoyable and challenging it is, with the added benefit of a trip to the pub after. If you would like any further information please get in touch with me on either 07870307441 or [email protected] On a more positive note, at our recent AGM, Rebecca Harrison was elected as ringing captain, taking over from her Dad, Richard.

Rebecca has only just turned 17 but is a highly competent ringer and is part of the Exeter cathedral band, she is also a qualified ringing teacher and has been helping our learners for the past year. Thank you for taking on the role Rebecca. I hope you enjoy the challenge, let the eye rolling begin…!! Mark Wonnacott, Tower captain Hatherleigh

Trains to Exeter The Sunday Rover from Okehampton station to Exeter will commence on Sunday 21 May and run every Sunday until 10 September. This is a wonderfully relaxing and fun way to enjoy a day out in Exeter and the fare is only £5.20 return for an adult, so it is great value too. Details available from the station and soon to be online at dartmoor-railway, also look out for the new leaflets in the Information Centre and the Community Centre. Train to London The train to London from Okehampton in March was such a success (despite a technical hitch) that we hope to run another (with no hitch!) in the autumn. All 500 tickets sold out within days and the atmosphere was very lively and friendly. Everyone really enjoyed their trip to the capital and can't wait to go again. You can join OkeRail on facebook too.

HATHERLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Notes from last meeting April 11th 2017 The next meeting will be the Council AGM on Tuesday 9th May at 7pm. This will be preceded by the ANNUAL PARISH MEETING which will start at 6.30pm. The Parish meeting is separate from the Council meeting and is relatively informal. This is an opportunity to share your views to the Council on issues and ideas it can improve on. Your 8 Councillors are Clare Tyson (Chair/ Mayor), Rachel Laycock (Deputy), Ian Trenaman, Deb Laing-Trengove, Claire Gladstone, Peter Back, Keith Kingstone, Ben Bailey. Andrea Kimber has expressed an interest in joining us, more on this next month. There remains one vacancy; apply to the clerk if you are interested. It was agreed to support the Skatepark Group idea to purchase granite blocks to act as benches. Having considered quotes from various street furniture specialists the benches found on ebay will bring a considerable saving. It’s that time of year again to review the Town Council asset register. It has been noticed a few items are missing off the list. The Clerk supplied Councillors with a list of amendments to be discussed next month. There have been three important meetings/ events this month. 1. Joint Local Plan consultation phase. As reported last month it is proposed to add a new

May 2017

settlement boundary with a minimum of 50 more houses and employment space for an area beyond the nursing home. This could mean more housing development for Hatherleigh within a 15 year timespan on top of the 106 houses allocated for the market. The Council believe this is too much development within too short space of time. We also understand there will be over-capacity issues at the primary school. A formal response has been agreed for objecting to this and will be submitted to the Planning Inspector. Full details of all this are on the Town Council website. 2. Market. A meeting took place with a company interested in developing the market site. They were keen to hear our views on what the Town consider are key issues before they draw up any plans and begin discussions with WDBC. We stress this was only a preliminary meeting and does not guarantee anything. 3. Car park. West Devon Borough Council have finally approached us with an offer to lease the car park. Although this is a step forward we will have to carefully consider the terms and conditions. A further meeting is to be arranged. To repeat our stance, the Council feel very strongly that any short term trial will simply not work as it is difficult to change people’s habits unless they are forced to do so. Creating the provision of a free car park must go in hand with any parking restrictions. On the subject of parking, Devon County Council have been in contact over their earlier position of assigning us with a Highways Officer. This may now NOT happen. We have instead been issued with a map on which to draw

ourselves the ‘wish list’ of what the community wants to see. They will then review this and feedback what is or isn’t feasible. Toilets: Following our review of the cleaning arrangements and subsequent advertisement for the post, we are to see a change in cleaner. Mrs Rewse will take over next month. The Council have thanked Mr Leahy for his commitment over the years. The toilets are currently having a revamp by WDBC, we apologise for any inconvenience but this revamp is long overdue! Complaints have been received about an unemptied bin in Oldham Road, a broken bin in Oakfield Road and a missing ‘No Ball Games’ sign at the entrance to Moor View. We will look into the purchase of a new bin, the missing sign and the un-emptied bin has been reported to WDBC. Correspondence was received from ‘Visit Dartmoor’, a company linked to Visit England which promotes towns and villages to encourage visitors. They invited that we send an article profiling the Town (free of charge). The Council agreed to this to help support local businesses. Don’t forget: Annual Parish Meeting, May 9th, 6.30pm. An opportunity to share your views to the Council on issues and ideas it can improve on, or just come and say hello! A full account of the meetings including planning and financial matters are available in the minutes, these are available on the notice board at Millennium Square or on the Town Council website at http:// www.hatherleightowncouncil.org/ Correspondence to the Council should be addressed to the Clerk and for inclusion at a meeting be received 4 days prior to the meeting date. HATHERLEIGH COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL Tel: 01837 810248 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hatherleigh-pri.devon.sch.uk

The end of the Spring Term ended on a very high note with a celebration of music making at our Spring Concert in the Community Centre. This was closely followed by our very own 'Hatherleigh's Got Talent' which was organised by the School Council. Acts included songs, dances, poetry recitals, magic tricks and jokes. Both events were huge successes and well done to all the children who took part with such enjoyment , enthusiasm and talent! Thank you to all those in the local community who continue to support the school in any way - by providing extra-curricular clubs, visiting school and helping us to raise funds for school improvement. Thank you to all those who contributed to the Co-op community fundraising project. The school is also currently collecting Sainsburys’ Active Kids Vouchers for new PE and Playground equipment. We would be very grateful for any you may be able to collect from family and friends. They can be dropped in at the office or popped in the school letter box on the gate. Your support is greatly appreciated. On that note you may have noticed our lovely blue school gates. We are extremely grateful to RIGHT ANGLE OF HATHERLEIGH for so very generously repairing our old gates and then coating them in their new shiny colour. They make the front of our school look much smarter and brighter and the children love them! Thank you Right Angle! You may also have noticed that we have now installed secure access and cctv at the school gates for the safety of the children. The cctv also covers vehicular access by the gate which will help us to monitor road safety outside school at peak times. There is plenty to look forward to this term and the good weather enabled the children to play out on the field on the first day back which was very popular. Do check our website for up to date news of what is happening in school. 22 Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne, Jacobstowe, Northlew and Monkokehampton May 2017

MEETH St. Michael and All Angels, Okehampton Deanery Bishops in Mission with Bishop Nick McKinnel's visit over three days in March-beginning of April was very special and uplifting. He was very encouraging and supportive of all that is happening throughout the Northmoor Team and beyond, thanking all Clergy Layreaders Churchwardens and Officers for their part in keeping the churches alive and thriving in this part of Devon. During the period of Lent when the church looks a little less welcoming due to lack of flowers, it was wonderful to be able to fill the church with God's gifts of beautiful flowers once again for our very special Easter Day Service. A new year in the church calendar and a fresh beginning for us all.

Lent Soup Lunch

Many thanks to all who helped in any way with the lunch-although we were slightly down in numbers -it was still good to meet in fellowship and friendship enjoying each other's company, having a good chat and catching up with friends and neighbours.

Messy Meeth Monkeys

Next meeting will be held in the village hall on Saturday 6th May at 9.30. a.m. for fun, games and learning about the Parable of The Pearl of Great Price. Refreshments will be served. All are most welcome to come along and join us.

Bellringing.

So sorry but we are still unable to ring the bells at this time. Hopefully it will not be too long before we hear their cheerful chimes once more!

April saw the Ladies of Meeth Guild venture out to Hartland Abbey on what proved to be an unexpectedly warm and sunny day, with such beautiful weather we decided to spend our time outside, enjoying the vibrant colours of azaleas, camellias and rhododendron in The Shrubbery before attempting the walk to the coast, we chose the longer, scenic and somewhat challenging route through the bluebell woods. Our efforts were rewarded, not only with the splendid display of bluebells but also with magnificent views of the countryside and rugged coastline. A really enjoyable outing. Our next meeting will be at 7.30pm on 16th May in The Village Hall when we will be trying our hand at Decoupage.

Define the Future

Volunteers Required Meeth Parish Council, agreed at its March meeting that a Steering Group (Neighbourhood Development Committee) should be established to develop and deliver a Neighbourhood Development Plan (NP) for the Parish. A Neighbourhood Development Plan is a community-led framework for defining future development, regeneration and conservation of a designated area. The foundation of a good neighbourhood plan is effective community involvement from the beginning of the process. Mike was an apprentice Horse Logger and also worked at Highgrove for the Prince of Wales. His talk, with slides, covered the use of heavy horses through the ages and how they are used on their farm at Highampton. All the work is done with mostly gypsy type cobs and covers everything from ploughing, grass cutting and baling hay without using any oil. They use harness made of plastic which is imported from the Amish people in America. Next month the group is visiting Morwelham Quay on May 16.

It is with great sadness that I have been asked to put a piece in the Pump regarding dog owners who do not take their responsibility of clearing up after their pets seriously. Neil Price ed.

WI

Exbourne, Sampford Courtenay & Jacobstowe WI The latest meeting was held in Sampford Courtenay village hall on April 6. Everyone was welcomed and Jerusalem was sung. The speaker was Debbie Hastings, who has held many horticultural postions during her career. These included Head Gardener at Dulwich College and Birbeck College. She gave a presentation on Victorian Gardens, explaining how the wealthy developed gardens with cheap labour and the many plants that were being imported. After tea and biscuits the business was dealt with. The Coffee Morning held in Old Schools, Hatherleigh had raised £220. It was decided that at the next Coffee Morning in October, there should be more savoury items and not as much bric-a-brac. The first meeting to arrange the Okehampton Show entry is to be held on April 20 at Ethel Nancekivell's. The Exbourne Neighbourhood Plan Consultation Day is on May 6 in the village hall and the WI has been asked to supply tea/coffee and biscuits. Margaret Hawkins, Annie Warren, Ann Langworthy and Ann Leaman volunteered to carry this out. There are to be joint captains for the skittles team next season. They are Ann Langworthy and Shirley KIng. The next walk is at the Fox and Hounds, Bridestowe on April 28. The winner of the Flower of the Month was Margaret Rook and Margaret Cleveland won May 2017

the competition for a piece of Victorian memorabilia. The next meeting is in Exbourne village hall on Thursday May 11 at 7.30pm and will be the Annual Meeting.

Facility Grant offered by WDBC. Neighbourhood Plan Update. In the Borough Council’s JLP, Exbourne has been defined as a “Sustainable Village” and the NP Group proposes to make some comments regarding some areas of uncertainty in relation to the policy in this area. The JLP has made an assessment that around 30 new homes are capable of coming forward in Exbourne in the period from 2014 to 2034. However the NP should be able to maintain a certain amount of control on timing and which sites are used. Cllr Lawson reported that Little Ellicroft Meadow at Jacobstowe would be too small for an Air Ambulance Night Landing Site however the Playing Field at Exbourne would still be an option. Cllr Foster explained the survey he completed for Highways relating to the 38 potholes on roads around the village. It was agreed to forward the survey together with a letter to DC Cllr McInnes. Planning. Councillors agreed a Neutral decision to a Notification for Prior Approval for change of use of agricultural building to dwelling house class C3 on land at Mucksey Lane, Exbourne. Councillors agreed to support amended plans for two storey rear extension at Coombe House, Exbourne. Within their comments of support they suggested as the adjacent orchard was considered agricultural land it should be delineated on the plan and kept separate from the domestic curtilage. The Annual Parish Meeting will be held in Exbourne Village Hall on Wednesday 26 April 2017 at 7 pm followed by a Parish Council Meeting at 8 pm. Wayne Keenan from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service will speak at the Annual Parish Meeting about parking issues in Exbourne and how they affect the Fire Service.

Potholes Like most places in Devon and else where we are dogged by 'potholes' in ever increasing numbers. Sadly Exbourne has become another place to be affected by this problem. I know the matter has been reported to the Parish Council in hope that they from their official position might get the potholes repaired. Sadly this has not worked. As a result on the 2nd February 2017 I telephoned the Highways Dept on 034515551015 and reported the location of the potholes. I was given a Reference Number W17976664 and told the matter would be dealt and even thanked for reporting it. Sadly, but not to my surprise nothing was done. As a result I again contacted the Highways Dept on 29th March 2017 and politely told them of my displeasure that the promised repairs had not been carried out. I was informed that according to their records the potholes had been filled in. I told them that they had not been repaired and was informed that this would be looked into again and dealt with. On this occasion I was given another reference number W17993041. So it remains to be seen if it will be done but in the meantime the Highways authority have placed themselves in a vulnerable position in as much as two reports have now been registered and sufficient time has passed to allow the work to be done. Should it now transpire that as a result of these potholes damage is caused to a vehicle, or some one falls whilst crossing the road having caught their foot in the pot hole, or a motor or pedal cyclist is thrown off their bike, then the High Ways Dept can be sued for damages. Should that situation arise then the Reference Numbers I have given above should be referred to, plus I would be prepared to make a statement to corroborate what I have done and said above. This might be a big stick to crack a walnut but some times its needed. Mr Steve Gazzard May 2017

Easter The Church was almost full for Easter Communion, including lots of children, which was lovely. The bells rang, the choir sang, the children enjoyed their egg hunt and we were able to worship God in this ancient place in freedom. Not so in some countries. And I thought how fortunate we are. Thanks for the eggs, Trix!

Rest in Peace

A service of thanksgiving for the life of James Forbes McInnes took place at the Parish Church on March 17th. Jim, as he was known to everyone, was a well loved farmer here for many years before he and Hilda moved to Okehampton. He will be sadly missed by his son and daughter and sister and their families as well as the farming community with which he had such a long connection. May he rest in peace.

He loves writing and says "It is the only career for which I am paid to daydream". We meet at the Ockment Centre, North Street, Okehampton, EX20 1AR at 2.30PM. Okehampton U3A welcomes new or prospective members, who will receive a warm welcome. The only requirement is that members are not in full time employment. More information can be found at www.u3a-okehampton.org.uk; or please contact our chairman at [email protected]. If you would rather turn up and introduce yourself thatâ??s fine too. After each talk there is always a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits even a chance to win a raffle prize. A donation of £1 at the door is always appreciated.
