May 2017 As always, lots to do in and around Ide during May, dates, times and venues are all detailed on the pages that follow. Ide Times would not exist without the large number of regular contributors who keep us informed about village events and it seems timely to thank them all for the time they give to this. Never satisfied though, it would be lovely to have even more contributions, stories, photographs, to enliven our pages. Of course, no expressions of gratitude would be complete without thanking Sue Campbell and her team who deliver the magazine through our letterboxes (some of which were clearly designed to ward off all comers!) in fair weather and foul. I’d better sign off now, before I start to sound like an Oscar’s award acceptance speech! Items for the June Ide Times should be sent Brenda Spivey – email: [email protected] by the 20th May please. Cover pictures These two birds, the Wheatear (on the left) and the Swallow (on the right) have both migrated here from Africa British swallows spend the winter in South Africa and then fly here covering about 200 miles a day to arrive in April or May. Migration is a hazardous time and many birds die from starvation, exhaustion and in storms. The Wheatear travels here from tropical Africa and arrives it bit earlier then the swallow, most will already have laid their eggs in nests on the ground by late April. 3.

Registered charity no. 1050108 The League of Friends attached to Ide Lane Surgery. Co-ordinator Jane Greenslade Tel 428902 email jane.greenslade @nhs.net We support patients by providing volunteer transport to medical appointments for elderly and disabled people, befriending isolated people and providing information/ support for carers. This is the last Alphington Life piece I will write as I am retiring very soon! I am pleased to report that ILF will be in very good hands with the new Co-ordinator, Mandy Hendley. I will miss all the patients I have worked with over the years, the wonderful volunteers and also the great staff at Ide Lane Surgery. However it will be lovely to have a lot more free time and a chance to catch up with all the things at home which I haven’t got round to for ages! R.I.P. We were very sorry to hear of the death of Anne Hawken. Anne used to live in Ide but was latterly in Lucerne House in Alphington. She and her late sister Christine were both drivers for ILF for many years. Anne’s profound deafness did not prevent her from being very good at this role. New currency Did you know that the old paper £5 notes will not be legal tender after 5 May? (They can be paid into banks for a bit longer after this but not be used in shops etc.) Lots of patients who ILF drive to appointments give £5notes for donations. A plea from Mike, the ILF Treasurer: please do not fold the plastic £5 notes….once they have been folded they are never flat again!

Ide Primary School Knowing Children as Individuals

Dear Consultee,

Consultation on the proposal to extend the age range at Ide Primary School Ide Primary School would like to provide pre-school education at the school. In order to establish Ide pre-school it is necessary for the school to publish a formal proposal to change the age range at Ide Primary School from 4-11 to 2-11 years. 1. The purpose of this consultation document The purpose of this document is to provide information about the proposal to enable the wider community to make an informed response. 2. Background The Governing Body of Ide Primary School is aware of the need to continue to offer quality pre-school provision in the village and would like, with mutual agreement, to transfer the Ide Childcare Trust provision to the school. 3. The Proposal To change the age range of Ide Primary School from 4-11 to 2-11 years old when we have authorisation from the Department of Education. A change in age range would enable the school to provide early years education to children aged 2, 3 and 4 years. The school plans initially to continue offering the same service and hours as the current pre-school with a slight amendment of opening at 8.50am rather than 9am as at present. Those who wish to purchase additional hours on top of their child’s funded provision will be able to, should there be space available. 4. Objectives of the proposal a) To offer improved transition for children and families into the Reception class, and impact positively on future achievement. b) To extend the early years facilities to make Ide Primary School increasingly attractive to local families 5. Admissions to the Pre-school Parents will need to apply for a place in the pre-school in advance. These will be offered on a termly basis. If Ide pre-school is oversubscribed, priority will be as below, in line with the school’s admission oversubscription criteria: 1. Looked After Children or previously Looked After Children who were immediately adopted or made the subject of a child arrangements order or a special guardianship order. 2. Children for whom an exceptional medical or social need to attend this school is demonstrated. 3. Children who live in our designated area, with a sibling on roll at the point of application.

4. Other children who live in our designated area. 5. Children who live outside our designated area, with a sibling on roll at the point of application. 6. Children of members of staff employed for more than two years up to the point of application or recruited in the past 2 years to fill a vacancy for which there was a skills shortage. 7. Other children. There is no guaranteed link between the pre-school and reception intake, and attendance at pre-school will not give a higher priority for admission into reception. 6. Timeline Consultation for 6 weeks Friday 31st March – Friday 12th May The governors will review the feedback from this consultation during the summer term. The governing body will: either Amend its proposal in view of the feedback or The pre-school will open as outlined above replacing the current pre-school. Your views on the proposal outlined in this letter would be very much welcomed. The deadline for comments is Friday 12th May. Your views can be sent by email to [email protected] or by letter labelled ‘extending age range’ to Ide Primary School. If, after reading this, you require further information on the suggested pre-school or its implications for the organisation of the school, this can be obtained by contacting Sharon Tarr, Headteacher via the school office: 01392 259964. Informal face to face meetings can be arranged if needed. We look forward to hearing from you. Yours faithfully Sharon Tarr Headteacher

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the 3rd Ide Plant & Seed Swap on Sunday 23rd April. The sun shone, plants were bought and sold, cake was eaten and a good time was had by all. Claire, the Lady Horticulturist was on hand to give advice or clear up confusion about the names of plants while Martin from Little Bowhay Farm shared his wisdom on the world of pickling and jam making. The event was the first of a triple gardening bill in the village this year. Sunday July 2nd will see the return of Ide Open Gardens and in September (date tbc) it'll be the Fruit & Veg Show. If you're interested in taking part in Open Gardens, then please let us know - the more the merrier, all shapes and sizes welcome!! 8.

JUBILEE CLUB Robert Hesketh our speaker at the meeting on April 3rd told us many Tales of Smuggling in Devon. It would seem that there was a huge network of people from all walks of life involved in the various stages of this lucrative activity. Devon with its long coastline was ideally suited for secretly moving goods into the country and the North coast was particularly involved with smugglers from the Americas. If one had the money, shares could be bought, so the rich could get richer! The smugglers were experienced seamen and sometimes worked in collusion with the Royal Navy. Barrels of brandy were weighted to float just under the sea. Beer Quarry caves proved to be a useful hiding place with of course quarry men all in on the act. The grandfather of a parish clerk of Beer slipped while climbing the cliff path with a four gallon cask strapped to his back and chest resulting in him breaking his neck. His widow was given a good pension which enabled his grandson to be set up as a mason. Another good hiding place for contraband was in reputably haunted houses because the authorities were unwilling to search such places. It was with sadness we heard of the death of Anne Hawken just a short time after her birthday. There were several birthdays mentioned, including Peggy who is always remembering others. Also flowers were given to Betty Kinnaird on the occasion of her 80th birthday. DIARY DATES May 15th The Club`s 40th Birthday Party with music from Sounds Easy. May 22nd Outing to visit Brunel`s SS Great Britain at Bristol leaving Alphington at 10. 25 Cowick Street 10.30. Dunsford Hill Bottom 10.45. Top 10.50. and Ide 11.00. ‘Easter Rocks’ review It was great to see around 70 people gather to celebrate the most important event in the Christian calendar. The children hunted around the village for the 200 Easter eggs, then we all munched our way through a scrumptious spread of food before beginning the fun and games and singing. It was an amazing opportunity that brought both village churches together in the organisation, and provided a setting to dance, sing, and enjoy the Easter story. A massive thank you to everyone involved in the planning, catering, music, and serving for the event. Thank you to those who came to support and we pray that you all enjoyed it. Download - 19th May KS2+3 (Year 3 to Y9 kids) come along with your kindles/ipads if you want, to come and play games together. We have a playstation, Xbox and Wii for multiplayer games, a tuck shop (so bring some money). We take a break and gather together half way for 10 min to discuss a topic relevant to our lives, like ‘how to be a good friend’ etc. Alpha By the time you read this we will have already begun the Alpha course. But it’s not too late for you to pop over and join us. Every Thurs evening at 7pm in The Hub till 8th June. Nibbles and drinks are provided so even if you haven’t had time to eat dinner before you come, you won’t go hungry. We discuss big questions about the meaning of life and other topics. This is a course open to people from any background, faith or age. There is no charge and no commitment. Please come along and ask your questions and share your views – you will be very welcome! ****NEW ***** All Age service On the first Sunday of each month we will be opening the doors of the Hub for a new 5pm service. This will be a fun, informal and relaxed service catering for all ages, where there will be discussions of Bible stories, Christian values and themes. We will provide a light tea, particularly for kids. There will be opportunities to ask questions, pray and worship God in an environment where we learn alongside activities for the children. It is important that everyone feels welcome, loved and valued. Please drop in and say hi on 7th May at 5pm. The Vision: To grow closer to God and to each other as the family of God. To be a place of love and joy. To share our time, finances, giftings and talents to meet the needs of those around us, as directed by the Holy Spirit.

Easter Rocks on the 11th April was a great success, with about 90 adults and children taking part. Cut out egg shapes had to be found between the Congregational Church and the Parish Church. These were then exchanged for real chocolate Easter eggs. This was followed by some craft work, a buffet meal and then the highlight - a Rock Service. The music was provided by keyboard, drums and guitar. There were video clips about Easter and plenty of singing. A big thank you to all the organisers. Earlier on the 11th April we had the Funeral and Thanksgiving Service for the life of Anne Hawken, who for many years lived with her sister in Old Ide Lane. Anne had lived in Ide House as a child and during the war years - long before the main road was built. Anne trained as an Occupational Therapist and worked at the old Exminster Mental Hospital. Sadly, in middle age, she lost her hearing. However, she reached the age of 90 but died a few days later. The Summer Fete will take place on the Village Green on Saturday, 10th June, 2pm. Planning is underway and we are hoping to include a Dog Show this year, as well as the usual attractions of Maypole Dancing, Egg Throwing, Tug-of-war, plenty to eat and drink, and bargains galore! Once again, we shall be glad to borrow any gazebos to keep off the blazing sunshine, or maybe the rain! Dunchideock Film Night

Friday May 5thth, 7-45pm,

Dunchideock Village Hall

La La Land This is the heavily hyped and critically acclaimed movie which was the winner – then the loser – in the super mix up over Best Film on Oscar night. It is a boy and girl musical, following in a long Hollywood tradition. The boy (Ryan Gosling) is an aspiring jazz pianist, the girl (Emma Stone) and actress flitting between fruitless auditions and a waitress. They need opportunities, but what they find is each other.Certainly it caught the critics fancy. “You’ll leave with a tear in your eye and a song in your heart.” Said the Daily Telegraph, awarding it 5 stars. It also scored 93% from Rotten Tomatoes’ audiences and won six other Oscars including Best Director, and also some 95 awards elsewhere. Yet so many who have seen it, having read about its awards successes have been more or less disappointed. Our view is - forget the hype, come and see it without huge expectations and enjoy it for what it certainly is - a gentle, humorous, Hollywood romance. We certainly enjoyed it. WEST TOWN FARM NEWS Thank you to everyone who came along to Spring at the Farm. What an amazing day. It’s exciting to open our doors again after Winter and Autumn. We hosted our first birthday party of the year, which just so happened to be the sunniest day of the month, Everyone had a really good time and the kids were kept busy. We love hosting birthday parties on the farm so please do get in touch for ideas. The Shepherd's hut is getting lots of bookings and we have some exciting new bell tents so watch this space. We’re really pleased to say our TB tests came back negative. It’s such a worry waiting for the results. I also found myself helping to deliver a calf. It wasn’t a situation I thought I’d ever have been in, especially when wearing new jeans. To cut a long story short (and miss out some gory bits) it ended up with a pile of us on the floor after the final tug and a very happy healthy calf laying at our feet. Andy was fantastic at guiding all of us through what to do and kept us all very calm. We now have seven new calfs and a few more to come. The bluebells are blanketing the ground along part of the farm trail walk. Have you followed the arrows and information boards around the trail? Nigel Hewitt returns to the farm on May 21st at 9am for another bird walk. The farm is looking stunning at this time of year so take advantage of this guided walk. We’ll be running a cafe afterwards selling breakfast baps and cream teas. This will be open to everyone, not just people on the walk. Pop in for a cuppa whilst strolling ‘around the world’. Cafe from 11am-12.30pm. Our freezers are full with mince, stewing steak and all your favourite cuts so do pop in. It’s nearly BBQ season so perfect time to try our delicious burgers, plus we sell charcoal.
