JULY/ AUGUST KOL SHALOM DEADLINE:

JUNE 10, 2016

Imagine a very large warehouse, filled with hundreds of people of all ages from synagogues, Hillels, universities, commercial companies, and religious schools gathered for one common purpose: to help those in need. This April, our Hebrew School engaged in mitzvah work in the name of tikkun olam and Good Deeds Day. Instead of meeting at Congregation Beth Shalom, our Hebrew School families drove up to the Jewish Relief Agency?s warehouse in Northeast Philadelphia to pack boxes of Passover food for those who do not have enough to be able to buy these items. Each box was stuffed with items such as matzah, gefilte fish, borsht, canned goods, and potatoes. These boxes allow for families to celebrate the holiday in a meaningful way, despite their financial situation. At one point, I stopped to take the experience in- the sound of music playing over loud speakers, the buzz of volunteers laughing and kibitzing, the sight of people running into old friends from the Philadelphia region, the weight of the boxes

warehouse. It lifted me up and inspired me to want to do even more good on a daily basis. Perhaps the most powerful and humbling part of the trip was when we packed up our cars with boxes and delivered them to families in need of food for Passover. We all know how financially challenging it can be to prepare our homes for Passover. Because of the Jewish Relief Agency and the kindness of volunteers, those who don?t have enough funds are still able to celebrate Passover. we were helping to assemble. The entire experience was a powerful one. People of all backgrounds, Jews and non- Jews alike, dropped what they were doing on a Sunday morning to come together and do something to make the world a better place. Words cannot describe the ruach, spirit, I felt in that

If you are interested in helping to pack and distribute boxes to those in need, the JRA will be welcoming volunteers on the following 2016 dates: May 1st , June 5th, July 10th, August 7th, September 11th, October 9th, November 13th , and December 11th. FROM OUR RABBI

WHEN A COUPLE WANTS ME TO MARRY THEM I always like to give the couple The New Jewish Wedding by Anita Diamant (Fireside 2001) as a sourcebook and to provide useful text for a Wedding Information Booklet which I encourage the couple to create for their simchas. I pray, in time, that I can give the couple The New Jewish Baby Book by Anita Diamant, but that?s for another article appearing in the next issue of the Kol Shalom.

INTERMARRIAGE By Rabbi Michael Beals Is the question, ?Have I ever considered doing an intermarriage?.? Or Is the question, ?Have I ever SERIOUSLY considered doing an intermarriage?? I make that differentiation because if I am being honest, there ARE times when the thought has gone through my mind. In the Conservative Movement, a rabbi can be thrown out of the Rabbinical Assembly (our union) if we officiate or even ATTEND an intermarriage. I lost a whole branch of my family because I respected this ruling because they dropped me after I didn?t show up for the wedding. And in the case of a second marriage in my previous congregation, where the first husband had died tragically years earlier, and there would be no issue of children in the second marriage, it broke my heart not to officiate for the widowed congregant. Celebrating love ? celebrating monogamy ? celebrating commitment: what could be more wonderful? But my authority to perform a wedding comes directly from my ordination as a Conservative Rabbi, and that authority gives me standing only when both partners are Jewish ? playing by the same rules. Aside from love, a Jewish marriage is very much like creating a business partnership between two equal parties, under the same set of laws. And a Conservative 4 I KOL SHALOM/ MAY/ JUNE 2016

rabbi is expected to understand those laws, after six years of training in seminary, including the study of Talmud, so that he or she can be relied upon to interpret those laws and be a reliable mesudar keddushin (literally ?the one who orders holiness.?) So in the eyes of halacha, Jewish law, it is fraudulent for a rabbi to conduct an intermarriage because he or she has no standing under the law to perform such an act ? it is a misrepresentation of Jewish law and tradition. I am not judging the worthiness of the couple or their love for one another. I AM judging the legal competence of the rabbi (or cantor) to perform the intermarriage. Divorce is close to fifty percent in this country. We want to give the couple every possible chance of success. Sharing the same religion and set of values helps the couple create a home and family together. Studies show that children born to an intermarried couple, where the couple says they will raise the children in both faiths and then let them decide in adulthood, are raising a generation of agnostic adults without a faith community. This inability to decide is not fair to the children. I warmly welcome interfaith families who have decided to raise their children Jewish at Congregation Beth Shalom. I give honor, respect and dignity to the non- Jewish partner in the relationship. My inability to perform the intermarriage does not reflect the value I place on the intermarried family who stands before me. The doors of my synagogue are open to all.

Finding a marriage counselor who will work with newly married couples is another requirement I have for couples. Most couples are focusing exclusively on details of the wedding, while I am more interested in details of the marriage, and its success. Counselors sometimes will give the couple a compatibility test to take, which outlines both areas of compatibility as well as important differences the couple should be aware of, before the glass is broken under the chuppah. The ?talk? that the rabbi gives to the couple should be original, fresh, and written just for that couple. To achieve this goal I do three things. First, I ask each partner to write a letter explaining why they want to marry the other person, including what qualities they most value, with clear cut examples which I can share under the chuppah. I then share how the couple met one another, as well as first impressions. I hope these letters are stored in the wedding album and reviewed often during the course of the marriage so the couple never forget why they chose one another. Thirdly, I review both the Torah portion just read that past Shabbat, AND the upcoming Torah portion. I extract lessons from both that will be appropriate to the couple. Lastly, I pay great attention to each partner?s Hebrew name. I might ask each partner for whom they were named, and what qualities did their respective namesake possess. I want to honor the choices each partner?s parents made when they selected these names decades earlier, and I want to honor the deceased relative once again, at the wedding, and invite them to spiritually take an orchestra seat for the big event. I link those qualities each couple mentioned in their letters (mentioned above) to qualities found in their unique Hebrew names. I see each partner?s Hebrew name as a special gift they are each bringing to the relationship, and I would like to imagine each name as an individual light, that when combined with its partner name, creates a flame so bright that it shines right up to heaven. Follow me along to the next edition of the Kol Shalom as we explore the reasoning and importance behind our Jewish names.

CHESED EXTENDS A HELPING HAND By Ellen L. Weingart Congregant Deane Kattler calls Beth Shalom?s Chesed Network Committee "a lifesaver? during a time of need. In 2012, Deane was two weeks into chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer when her husband ruptured a tendon in his ankle and had to have surgery. "He couldn?t put any weight on his ankle for six weeks and my treatments left me feeling so exhausted, I couldn?t do anything,? she said. The committee provided meals for the couple for weeks. Faith Silver had just joined Beth Shalom and volunteered for the Chesed Network. "How she got involved so quickly is just amazing,? said Deane. "We?re still close.? Chesed is commonly translated as "loving kindness? and the Chesed Network reflects the true meaning of the word. Chesed volunteers provide help to synagogue members faced with health issues or personal loss. Rabbi Michael Beals dates the origination of the Chesed Network to Michael Horowitz, CBS?s cantor when Rabbi Beals came to the congregation in 2004. Diane Wolf served as the first chairperson. Cantor Horowitz "was known for the extra mile he would go in serving our congregants?pastoral needs,? said Rabbi Beals, adding that his departure left a void in the synagogue?s ability to care for its congregants while Rabbi Beals served for a time as CBS?s only clergy member. "That?s when our volunteers stepped up,? he said. Cindi Viviano, past chair of Chesed Network, assessed the help congregants might need when faced with an illness or the loss of a family member. There are four main components to the Chesed Network: hospital visits, providing meals during times of illness, planning Shiva, and visits to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Currently, Elaine Schmerling coordinates meals for congregants with unexpected health problems. Debbie Grossman is the contact

for hospitalized congregants. People entering the hospital who say it is OK to contact the synagogue, will be contacted by Grossman (as well as the rabbi and cantor), who will arrange for visitors. She also lets Elaine know if people need help with meals once they?re home. Frances Ratner and Linda Sigman help with planning Shiva. Frances speaks with the family to find out if help is needed with Shiva or a meal of condolence and then communicating with Linda, who sets up an on- line volunteer sheet and sends an email to Chesed volunteers. Supporting members in assisted living facilities or nursing homes, the newest component of the Chesed Network, is led by Claire Kantar. The committee would like to set up a list of volunteers to visit nursing home and assisted living residents. "No one since Cindi has been willing to be in charge of all the Chesed roles,? said Elaine. "She helped at every Shiva, was in touch with all families needing meals and actively participating in providing them, and coordinated hospital visits. I don?t know how she kept up with it.? When Janet Bailis?husband became ill in August and was hospitalized for 10 days, followed by a long recovery, both were physically and emotionally drained. They found the Chesed Network "marvelously helpful,? said Bailis. "They provided wonderful meals ? at least three times a week for several weeks. All I had to do was reheat. We were told who was coming and when. "They were just so thoughtful and kind. This was something that lifted our spirit at a time when my husband and I really needed it and we truly appreciate it. It?s one of the things that makes CBS such a wonderful community to belong to.? Osnat David had a similar experience in November when she underwent surgery for a large, benign tumor. "I once told Elaine that if I ever

needed help, it would be with meals. My family can do many things, but I?m the only one who can cook,? explained Osnat. "When I had surgery, I called Elaine and home- cooked meals appeared every few days for three weeks. The meals were delivered by someone from the family and they?d stay and visit. "Just one call to Elaine and she organized everything. She?s amazing. I?m grateful to have such a beautiful community through the synagogue. It?s the kind of community where people want to feel needed.? Elaine also has been a recipient of Chesed?s help. Several years ago when she had major surgery, a friend organized meals for her, sending her name to the Chesed Committee. "I felt so loved and supported that I joined Chesed to help support others,? she recalled. When Elaine took charge of the meals, she found the role very time- consuming until she discovered a free online tool, TakeThemAMeal.com, for coordinating meals. She uses the site to create a recipient- specific sign- up sheet for providers to choose when they will provide meals. "The site makes it so easy,? said Elaine. Congregants can ask for help directly or may be contacted because Chesed has heard they might need help, said Karolin Lipman, vice president for membership, whose purview includes the Chesed Network. She?s also a Chesed volunteer.

CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM I 5

"We try to reach out to people who have a medical issue or loss, but we also try not to be invasive or intrusive. Some people don?t need any help because they have support close by, but sometimes we?re really needed and the congregant appreciates our offer to help.?

meals, helped me get to doctors? appointments, and helped get my kids where they needed to be. Elaine is amazing, but there?ve been lots of people who have been here to help.

She expects to volunteer with Chesed after she recovers and hopes other congregants will consider it too.

Karolin said some congregants have been surprised when they hear from Chesed with offers to help. "They don?t know about us,? she said. That wasn?t the case for Deane, Janet or Osnat, all of whom had previously helped provide meals for congregants, but Vered Nohi, who is recovering from breaking her heel earlier this year, said the help came as a surprise. She knew about Chesed, but "had no expectation? of the amount of help she has received. "They showered me with love, support, and advice,? said Vered, a single parent with no other relatives nearby. "My recovery has been a long haul and they?ve provided

community, they do care. You don?t have to ask for help, they just do it. It?s uplifting ? people pull you out of a situation that would be just about impossible to manage on your own.?

Chesed volunteers contribute as their schedules allow; there is no set obligation to prepare meals or visit. "If you can, when you can, as you can,? said Karolin.

They?ve gone above and beyond.? She said people, including her, can feel embarrassed asking for help because they think of themselves as self- sufficient. "One difference between Americans and Israelis,? said Vered, who is Israeli, "is that when you ask Americans how they feel, they don?t tell you because they don?t think you really care. But in the CBS

"The Chesed Network is CBS?s first responder, letting us know who in the congregation has a special need best filled by a clergy visit and blessing,? said Rabbi Beals. "The Chesed Network is the true heart and soul of our synagogue, taking care of our congregants when they are at their most vulnerable.?

BYRABBI MICHAELBEALS Congregants from all four of Wilmington?s synagogues came together to form a united Jewish Delaware delegation to AIPAC ? the American- Israel Public Affairs Committee National Policy Conference, held from March 26- 28, in Washington, DC. The highlights of the National Policy Conference were Israel policy addresses by Republican presidential candidates John Kaisek, Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump, as well as Democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton. Conspicuously missing was Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders. He claimed he had a pressing campaigning schedule out west which did not allow him time to make the east coast venue. All four candidates basically expressed the same crowd- appealing pro- Israel sentiments, with the

8 I KOL SHALOM/ MAY/ JUNE 2016

exception that all three Republican candidates promised to rip up the Iran nuclear agreement when they became president and also promised to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem if elected. It was thought that Republican nominee Trump would get either a cold reception or be met by vocal opposition due to opinions he has expressed in the past. However, in reality, Trump was the most effective speaker, inspiring applause and standing ovations. Some of Trumps statements, like an earlier promise to remain neutral in the Israel- Palestine arena were countermanded at AIPAC by personal pledges like moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. Other Republican presidential nominees who made similar pledges as nominees, did not follow through when elected president because they did not want to lose the ability to be an honest broker in future Israeli- Palestinian negotiations.

The third objective was U.S. diplomatic support for all political agreements in the peace process being arrived at exclusively by the Israeli and Palestinian governments, without interference or pressuring by third parties, like the United Nations, which has a hostile track record when it comes to Israel.

Standing before you are the lay and professional leadership of this organization.

Members of Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth, Chabad, Congregation Beth Emeth and Congregation Beth Shalom, representing the Traditional, Orthodox, Reform, and Conservative streams of Judaism, put aside theological differences to unite in their shared commitment to a strong and vibrant alliance between the United States and Israel. The delegation included two rabbis: Rabbi Michel Beals of Congregation Beth Shalom and Rabbi Steven Saks of Adas Kodesch. The two rabbis have united on many issues, including forming a community minyan which meets twice weekly, alternating between CBS on Wednesdays and AKSE on Fridays. And along with Rabbi Yair Robinson of CBE, the three rabbis led a three- way synagogue trip to Israel two summers ago. It?s not that all the members felt the same way about controversial subjects like the Israel- Palestine Peace Process, Benjamin Netanyahu, West Bank settlements, President Obama?s policy on Israel, or the current slate of U.S. presidential candidates. Rather, the Jewish delegates who lobbied Senators Tom Carper, Chris Coons and Representative John Carney, all put their own personal differences aside, to focus on a narrow legislative agenda advocated by AIPAC. That agenda had three objectives. The first objective was support for the reauthorization of snap- back sanctions if Iran failed to abide by the terms of the recently concluded nuclear deal. The second objective was support for continued foreign aid to Israel, and an increase in military aid given the additional challenges faced by Israel with an emboldened Iran flush with sanctions- relief funds.

Statement by AIPAC President Lillian Pinkus regarding negative remarks made by GOP Presidential Candidate Donald Trump , towards President Obama, during speech at AIPAC.

We speak on behalf of the Board of Directors and professional staff. From the moment this conference began, until this moment, we have preached a message of unity. We?ve said, in every way we can think of, ?Come Together.? But last evening ( March 21, 2016) , something occurred which has the potential to drive us apart. To divide us.

RABBI STEVEN SAKS , ADAS KODESCH SHEL EMETH, WILMINGTON & RABBI MICHAEL BEALS PHOTO CREDIT: RABBI BEALS

Aside from politics, the Delaware delegation was touched by the many educational forums which highlighted all sorts of Israeli current events, including IsraAIDS ,impressive work on behalf of Syrian refugees, in Turkey, in Jordan and even off the coast of Israel. Also impressive was the diversity of non- Jewish AIPAC delegates, representing the Latino, African American and Christian communities, as well as the large number of university students, 4,000 strong, who were in attendance. This AIPAC National Policy Conference marked the best attended in the organization?s history, with almost 19,000 delegates in attendance ? including the mighty Delaware delegation ? almost 20 strong.

We say unequivocally that we do not countenance ad hominem attacks, and we take great offense to those that are levied at the President of the United States of America from our stage. While we may have policy differences, we deeply respect the office of the President of the United States and our President, Barack Obama. We are disappointed that so many people applauded a sentiment that we neither agree with nor condone. Let us close this conference in recognition that when we say we must ?Come Together,? we still have a lot to learn from each other. And we still have much work to do? because broadening the base of the American pro-I srael movement is essential and our unity is our strength. Let us pledge to each other that in this divisive and tension-filled political season that we will not allow those that wish to divide our movement? from the left or the right? to succeed in doing so.

2016 EMANNUEL DINING HALL UPDATE Thanks to many volunteers, we served food to the neediest in our community on CBS's three designated days of the year at Emmanuel Dining Hall (EDH); February, March, and April 7th. For those who don't know, the area synagogues collectively provide lunch on the 7th of every month at the EDH east location. Other churches and community groups provide food and volunteers for lunches for any who need, at three different EDH locations, run by Ministry of Caring, EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR. A special thank you to the Sisterhood, and a generous contributor, for providing the chicken dinners and desserts; Eva and Howard Weissman, Judy Dolinger (pictured with Dewitt, Manager 4/ 7), Esther Schmerling, Claire Kantar, and Evan Brodsky who helped serve on the various days; Marlene & Larry Ornstein for baking about 50 cupcakes each time (a big hit! ), Rhea Levy, Bethany Kutz, and Tina Heiman for providing desserts. We had fewer attendees this year, just under 150 each time (and only 113 in April: compared to the 200 just 5 years ago.) Hopefully this is a sign that the economy IS improving! Until next year, Elaine Schmerling, EDH Coordinator, Tikkun Olam Committee

ES BRENT NOW AVAILABLE ON AMAZON DELAWARE RESIDENT DOROTHY K. FINGER?S HOLOCAUST MEMOIR, ?ES BRENT,? IS NOW AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.COM Dorothy Krause (now Dorothy Finger) was born in Poland in 1930. By the time she was 14 she had been a refugee, a fugitive, a prisoner and a Holocaust survivor. Her heartwrenching story, ?Es Brent (It is Burning)?, told through her journals, speeches and other writings, is a window into one of the worst tragedies of the 20th century. Dr. Jay L. Halio, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of English and Director of Jewish Studies at the University of Delaware, has said, ?Dorothy Finger has written an extremely compelling and utterly moving account of her life as a Holocaust survivor. She begins with a detailed memoir of her experience as a young teenager in Poland during the

incredibly brutal horrors she underwent, watching almost all the members of her large family murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators. The rest of her book, consisting of a later memoir after her arrival in the United States and reprints of many talks she has given and testimonials she has received, fulfills her dying mother's wish that she should live to tell their story. And she tells it marvelously well.? After the war, relatives brought her to Wilmington, where she attended Wilmington High School, and received a nursing degree from Wilmington General Hospital. She met and married Louis J. Finger and raised three children. The book was completed to celebrate her 85th birthday, and is now available on Amazon.com. PEACE DRUMS CONCERT AT CAB CALLOWAY SCHOOL OF THE ARTS. PHOTO CREDIT: STEVEN DOMBCHIK

On Sunday, April 3, 2016, Congregation Beth Shalom hosted its first, sold out, Cabaret event. Under the direction of Peri Berman, attendees were treated to a Parisian style ambiance, and complimenting dinner and dessert. Throughout the evening guests were wooed by Master of Ceremonies, Rob Kleiner and enjoyed two full acts of performances by our very own congregants, including Executive Director, Sam Nussbaum. Thank you to all of the performers, Men?s club for working the bar, Kitchen Klub for donating and running the dessert station, and the Cabaret committee for all of their hard work. If you are interested in supporting art and music at the synagogue and/ or becoming a part of next year?s committee, please contact the CBS Main Office at (302) 654- 4462.

Thank you to all who came out and supported the Peace Drums Steel Band for their first Delaware performance. The Peace Drums Steel Band was formed in the Galilee Region of Israel by the Peace Drums interfaith initiative of Delaware. Jewish, Christian, and Muslim students have been brought together in the shared activity of learning a new style of music Caribbean steel band music. This was the band's first tour and is an attempt to showcase their musical accomplishment as well as promote peacemaking among Israeli Jews and Palestinians. A special thank you to the co- chairs of the Peace Drums Project, Rabbi Michael S. Beals and Reverend Dr. Gregory Knox Jones, Head of Staff at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

THE NUMBER ON HER ARM On Sunday, April 3, 2016, CBS congregants enjoyed a reading and discussion ?The Number on Her Arm? by Courtney Tisch. Courtney Tisch is a writer and educator from Washington, DC. After spending several years after college trying to be an actor as well as working at various non- profit organizations, Courtney decided to go back to school in 2012 for her Masters of Education from George Washington University. The manuscript for The Number on Her Arm was first written during a children?s literature course she took during her final semester in 2013. The book eventually went on to become a John Horrworth Children?s Book Award winner. Courtney ultimately became motivated to pursue publication of this book due to the strength, endurance, and selflessness of her grandparents, who were both Holocaust survivors. It is her hope that this book will not only let the memory of her grandparents live on forever, but that it will also serve to educate children from all over the world about the Holocaust. For more information, please visit www.thenumberonherarm,com.

MAZEL OF THE MONTH

MAZEL OF THE MONTH JORDYN FLAHERTY IS CALLED TO THE TORAH AS A BAT MITZVAH ON MAY 14, 2016. A seventh grader at Wilmington Friends School, Jordyn loves stories and music. At five, Jordyn picked up the violin and now plays classical and pop pieces. As an enthusiast for all kinds of stories, Jordyn consumes them and writes them, whether through reflections on travel to New York City or action on the volleyball court. Having just finished a season as a libero for the Delaware United Volleyball Club, Jordyn looks forward to a summer filled with sport, theater, and academic camps. For her Bat Mitzvah project, Jordyn volunteered at the Kutz Home, leading discussion groups and helping as necessary.
