Dear all, I was reading this article on Forbes.com:
Joined: 10/15/2014 Posts: 74 Neurons: 986
http://www.forbes.com/sites/richkarlgaard/2014/10/15/are-you-maneuverable/ and I stucked at this particular paragraph: "The cloud is rapidly commoditizing the availability of top-class technology. You can rent it by the minute from Amazon, Google GOOGL -0.85% and others." as well as: "Mass scale, global reach and powerful technology are, in sum, being commoditized" Would you please help me understand the meaning of "commiditized" and "commoditizing" used in these contexts? Is it correct If I take them as "simplified"? Thank you all so much.

You mean like "commercialize"? Back to top excaelis

Then what happened to "commodified"? That caused such a huffing and a puffing when it appeared, by those who object to the jargon approach of turning nouns into verbs. Was it decided to really get up their noses by shifting to "commoditize", or do both words refer to two different processes? (I find the latter to be awkward and it sticks on my tongue.)

Hi all, Romany, This is Alex,a business graduate from India.I think the word Commoditized is in vogue because I hardly remember hearing the word commodified in my 2 years business course. This is only my opinion.

Jerry.Wang, I believe this query got to be in the business forum rather than in a leterature forum. Now, to answer your question "You mean like commercialize?" In business sense, when a product gets commoditized, it becomes very difficult to market the product to your customer. Cloud computing helps service providers to share infrastructure/capabilities even if you dont own them. You can enter into a service aggrement and share the resources with others in the market. So,for instance, as in this case whether you get the services from Amazon or Google does not make any difference. So from Amazon's point of view how will you add value to your product and sell it? Writer says that (ironically) in the age of rapid growth in technology it is all boiling down to People/ human resources. Hope I have made my point clear.Cheers!

I saw it was listed in American dictionaries but in the OED it merely said, tersely, "Another word for commodify"...made me laugh!
