Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Review Course
Course Faculty: Caroline Ashman, MSN, RN, CMSRN Caroline is the Director of Professional Development for Eastside Medical Center near Atlanta, Georgia. Caroline initiated her nursing education at the University of Wolverhampton in England, received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, NJ, and holds a Master’s of Science in Nursing Education from Brenau University, Gainesville, GA. 2015 marked her 30th year in the nursing profession. She is also certified as a medical-surgical nurse by MSNCB. Caroline has been presenting the AMSN MedSurg Certification Review Course for close to 10 years. She was also an independent presenter for PESI Healthcare, traveling extensively presenting a seminar called "Current Trends, Treatments, and Issues”. Caroline has worked in a variety of hospital settings, including a Clinical Educator and a Charge Nurse, as well as a Sales Trainer and Nurse Advisor to the pharmaceutical industry. She moved to the US in 1991 and is past Chapter President of the Greater Atlanta Chapter of AMSN.

AMSN Certification Review Course Objectives This two-day course is an overview of interventions that medical-surgical nurses use to promote quality of life for their clients. Using the nursing process to enhance physical and psychological wellbeing in clients and their significant others is inherent in the role of the medicalsurgical nurse. Taking this course will provide those taking the medical-surgical certification exam with information necessary for success and will include practice exam questions. For those not taking the test, the course provides an excellent review of the body systems and nursing interventions used as well as objective and subjective data to gather. At the end of the activity, participants will be able to: 1. Describe techniques for preparing for a Medical-Surgical Certification exam. 2. Relate the pathophysiologic basis of various disease states to the nursing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation necessary. 3. Identify outcome criteria and evaluative criteria used by nurses to determine effectiveness of nursing care of various Medical-Surgical patients. 4. Outline the legal, ethical, and professsional responsibilities inherent in being a Medical-Surgical nurse caring for a variety of patients. Registration fee includes course and materials. Lunch is on your own. Edward Hospital has a full-service cafeteria or there are many restaurants within close proximity.
