MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN At last, after four months of political tension, followed by an amicable meeting of president elect Jokowi and contestant Prabowo, a happy ending and a feeling of relief surmounted the atmosphere of Jokowi’s inauguration as the seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia, alongside Jusuf Kalla as the Vice President. JKW and JK will lead Indonesia for the 2014 - 2019 period after winning one of the most fiercely contested presidential election in the Indonesian history in July 2014, signifying Indonesia's democracy is on the right track. On the other hand, Jokowi makes history as the first President who is not from the old establishment of military or senior political elites. In fact, Jokowi is the first president who previously served as a provincial governor and a first "commoner" president without "ties" to Soeharto during his long reign as president. JKW-JK have hand-picked their team based on character, as honesty, humble modest and hardworking people, a hallmark of competence and professionalism. We will see the President's team, wearing white shirts with rolled up sleeves, Jokowi's trademark of a working man. A new leader always brings new expectations! President Jokowi has a vision and mission to restore Indonesia's maritime historic glory and character as a maritime power, a game changing policy that will define his administering Soekarno's concept of "TRISAKTI" – political sovereignty, economic independence and a distinguished cultural identity as the national character. Jokowi designed the vision and mission into a nine-priority agenda popularly named "NAWA CITA", with the goal to achieve through economic policies the increased prosperity of the Indonesian people, to strengthen the national economic foundation already weakened as seen from the continued high rate of poverty, welfare, inequality, development gap between regions, environmental destructions as a result of over-exploitation of the country's natural resources, as well as high reliance on food, energy, finance and technology. Specifically in the energy and mining sectors, the challenges that have to be urgently addressed are among others, to create an attractive and conducive investment environment, subsidy reformation, enhancing the energy security to overcome the electricity crisis. The new President and his team, will have no time for a "honeymoon" as they have to immediately get to work to resolve the tasks of overcoming the oil subsidy issues, the trade deficit, the declining fiscal liquidity and the widening primary budget deficit. There won't be any confusion due to the ego sectoral orientation, as the team is to carry out only the President’s vision and mission, not the minister’s, in other words cross and inter-sectoral approach must be the call of the day to achieve the goals. We wish you all the best Mr President and Mr. Vice President, you have the support of the Indonesian people !

CONGRATULATION TO The President of the Republic of Indonesia Ir. H. Joko Widodo and The Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Drs. H. Muhammad Jusuf Kalla 2014-2019 one

Demographic Based Development: Keep Learning from the Future Seminar Thursday, 11 September 2014, Grand Ballroom - The Dharmawangsa Jakarta History of demography in Indonesia started with a scientific paper of Population written by Prof. Widjojo Nitisastro in 1955 and further developed in his dissertation research, titled “Population Trends in Indonesia. Awareness of the important role of demographics in economic development continues, until Prof. Widjojo Nitisastro along together with three colleagues in FEUI: Prof. Dr. Nathanael Iskandar (Tan Goan Tiang), Prof. Dr. Kartomo Wirosuhardjo, and Dr. Kartono Gunawan, founded the Institute of Demography University of Indonesia, on August 1, 1964. Institute of Demography has two (2) main objectives: 1. Assist planners, decision-makers, program implementers, researcher, business people, scholars, practitioners and a wider community in using demographic data and demographic variables in the development context. 2. In collaboration with other population studies centers, both within and outside the country, to develop a “research culture”

qualified in the field of Demography and Population. Development in Indonesia absolutely requires demographic data as the basis of planning. The entire manipulation potential of the development process stems from population data that are inaccurate. Development of planning should also include efforts to empower (empowering) the entire population of Indonesia in order to enjoy a better quality of life. The theme of the 50th Anniversary of the Institute of Demography UI is “Keep Learning from The Future”. This theme was chosen because talking about the population means dimensions that include the past, present and future. A wider knowledge on demography allows population projections in order to obtain a demographic condition in the future. Then we can formulate an appropriate policy response and make future planning more accurately matching the dynamics of the population.
