AN INTERVIEW WITH Victor Paige As METU TIMES CLUB members, we interviewed Victor Paige. As you all know he is one of our English teachers. The interview took place in our Culture and Convention Center. He kindly answered our questions. We were very excited. Students: Good morning Victor. How are you? Victor: Fine, thank you. How are you? Students Could you introduce yourself, please? Victor: My name is Victor Paige. I am an English teacher. I have been living in Ankara for almost 20 years. I have a daughter. She is 21 years old. She goes to Bilkent University. I have been working at ODTU for 6 years. Students: What do you like doing in your free time?

6

Victor: I like going to the gym, working out and I love listening to music. Students: Which one is more difficult? Being a parent or being a teacher? Victor: Being a parent is much more difficult because being a teacher, you take time off but being a parent, you never take time off. Even your child is big, you still worry about them, you still take care of them. It is much more difficult to be a parent. Students: Which country would you like to live? Why? Victor: Like to live? It is hard to say because I have two homes. America is my first home Turkey is my second home. There are a lot of places I would like to visit but I am happy where I am right now. Students: So you are happy in Turkey? Victor: Yes, I am. Students: What should we do to practice our English? Victor: To practice your English, I would say, you need to listen to more English. It is very important to listen so you can understand when someone is talking to you in English. Speaking English is a little difficult because you need someone that you can speak with, but listening will really help you. Students: Could you tell us one of your memories when you were 10 years old? Victor: Yes, but It’s a little bad though. When I was at school, I was a very bad student. In the new school year which I regret saying this but I almost got kicked out of school on the first day of school. Any other questions? Students: Why do you prefer working with kids?

7

Victor: I love working with kids because I feel like I am a people person and I like giving. While I was growing up, I made a lot of mistakes because I didn’t have a lot of support. I feel like I have something to give the kids that they can use to make them better people, be successful in life. Students: Do you like METU Primary School? Victor: Yes, I do. I like being a teacher. I like being around kids. They give me energy. People always ask me why I have so much energy. It is because I really love teaching. Can I ask you a question? How do you feel about ODTU? Can you tell me? Students: We feel good. We like it because there are nice teachers like you. Victor: What are your summer plans? Student:I am going to visit Bodrum. Victor: It is a very nice place. I love Bodrum. Student: I am going to visit England. Victor: I have been there before. It is rainy and gloomy. I don’t like the food but a lot of people disagree with me. Student: I am going to visit Paris. Victor: So you are going to the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland. Students: Did you see Malaysia or Singapore? Victor: This is the place I would love to go. I love travelling, seeing new countries, new people, new cultures. I heard that it a very exotic, tropical country. I am sure you’re going to have a great time. Make sure you take plenty of pictures. I would like to see some of them. Students: Thank you for giving us an interview. 8

Victor: Everyone! Have a great summer. Thank you for coming, stopping by and seeing me.You’re welcome.

11

This story is about love, pride and richness of the heart. The main charachters of the movie are Belle, a beautiful girl who lives in a village and the Beast ,who lives in a golden palace with a garden full of roses. The story begins with Belle’s father’s trip. Before he goes on a trip, he promises his daughters to bring them the things they want. Belle’s sisters want jewelery but Belle wishes for a single rose. The days pass but Belle’s father can’t find a rose. While driving his horse in the deep forest, he feels sad. He feels sad because he can’t find a rose. On his way, he finds an extraordinary garden. There are so many flowers in it. He picks a tiny rose. Suddenly, he finds himself staring at the beast. The beast traps him to a tower. When Belle gets the news, she decides to find him. When she arrives the castle, she finds her great love but doesn’t know it yet.

ATATÜRK THROUGH THE EYES OF CHILDREN

12

ATATÜRK AND ÜLKÜ We wanted to write about Ülkü. Ülkü is Atatürk’s adoptive daughter. She was born in Ankara on 27th November, 1932. Unfortunately, in 2012, she had a traffic accident and died when she was 79 years old. She lived with Atatürk until the age of 6. She accompanied Atatürk on his trips until 1938. After Atatürk died, she became the symbol of Atatürk’s love for children. Did you know that Ülkü’s mother was raised by Atatürk’s mother when she was a child? Ülkü was a lucky child because she could see Atatürk. We couldn’t see him but we learn about him and his reforms. We always remember him on special days and we never forget his thoughts and his targets for us and for our country. Ece Naz Ertuğrul & Deniz Özsınmaz

13

ATATÜRK In the Picture below, Atatürk and his daughter Ülkü were reading a book. Atatürk and Ülkü were very happy. The soldiers were amazed. We think after this photo, all the soldiers talked about Atatürk and Ülkü to their friends and

family. Atatürk

always looks very serious in his photos but when he is with children, he always smiles. He loved reading books. Education was the most important target in his life. He read 3.000 books in his life. He was a brave soldier. He was a smart leader. Atatürk opened Turkish Grand National Assembly on 23th April, 1920. He loved children so he gave Children’s Day as a present. He did a lot of reforms for us. The Reform of the Alphabet, The Clothing Reform, Civil Rights for Women.

In the past, it was very difficult to write and read with old letters so he reformed the alphabet. He did the clothing reform so women stopped wearing veils; they started to wear modern clothes. Men started to wear hats. Now we wear whatever we want to. He established a new educational system so thanks to him, girls can go to school and can have good jobs. Women can vote because we have civil rights for women. We love Atatürk.

25

NATURE Some people say they love nature but they cut trees and they kill animals. They build malls and factories instead of forests. Industrial waste damages our nature. If they destroy the nature and cut or burn the forests, our oxygen will finish in the future. Everywhere will be dirty; water, air… Can we breath dirty air? Can we drink dirty water? What can we do to protect nature? 1. Buy recyclable shopping bags.Bring your own bags to the süpermarket. Don’t take the plastics bags in the supermarkets. 2. Reuse all things. You can fix or repair some of them. 3. Collect used papers, old newspapers, magazines, bottles. Put them in the recycle bins in front of shopping malls or in our campus. 4. Use email: Use email rather than printing paper. 5. When you leave your classroom, turn your computer off. Switch off the classroom lights when everyone leaves school. 6.Avoid using disposable cups and plates at home, use the ceramic ones.

You all know that nature is a big, green house for us and for all the animals It is like a mother for us and for animals. Some people try to destroy and burn it . We need to say “stop” to those people. Some of you say “how?”, we need to teach the people not to throw everything in the garbage

Games All around the world there are many games. For example, hide and seek, hopscotch, playing tag, skipping, etc. Children like playing games because playing games are exciting and fun. Babies should play games because games develop their brains. In each game, there are rules. If we don’t obey the rules, the game is not fair. In every game , there is an objective. There are team games in the world. For example, volleyball ,basketball, football, etc. I like games. Do you like games ? QUESTIONS  Why is it important to play games for children? Because games develop children’s brains and the games are fun. Also, they develop their imagination.  Why do children like team games? Because playing alone is boring but playing in a team is exciting and fun.

I want to introduce Apple Pen because it is something new. Four weeks ago Apple Pen presented it. If you are interested in art, Apple pen is for you. Apple pen gives you a lot of tools. The iPad Pro senses the Apple Pencil, so you can use Apple pen for Ipad Pro. It is a very useful pen. Apple pen is made of metal and cable. If you press hard, you get thick lines. If you are good at drawing and if you love art, you can draw beautiful things.
