Michigan Care Improvement Registry adds Body Mass Index Component Body Mass Index – What you need to know Parents and Guardians! A new program has been added to the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR). We are excited to be able to use this MCIR BMI (Body Mass Index) program to enhance our services provided to your child at Tahquamenon Area Schools. This program calculates the BMI for age and gender and produces a full set of tools for us to use with you and your child to help prevent and treat weight related issues. This program also allows us to follow changes over time. The recording of your child’s height and weight is voluntary. As a parent/guardian you may decide to decline this service by contacting us. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a child’s height and weight. BMI is a reliable indicator of body mass for most children and teens. BMI helps health care providers know when a child’s weight puts them at risk for health problems now and as adults. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that health care providers screen all children and teens every year using the BMI measurement.
Not all children with high BMI values are at risk for weight related health problems. Sometimes a child with a lower BMI value may be at risk for a weight related health problem in the future. that is why we always ask about nutrition and physical activity, other health issues the child may have, and about health problems that other family members have or have had. As a healthcare provider in Michigan we use MCIR to help us keep track of immunization information. The MCIR has been used for over 20 years and is a model for high quality similar service around the country. We are excited to be able to use this MCIR BMI program to enhance our services provided to your student(s) at Tahquamenon Area Schools. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you have. [email protected] to opt out. The C.A.M.P. (Counseling and Medical Place) is your school-based adolescent health center providing professional medical and mental health services for your students. The C.A.M.P. is open Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. The CAMP School-Based Health Center is a project of the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District (EUP ISD), funded through a grant from the Michigan Departments of Education and Community Health. The health center is made possible through partnerships between Tahquamenon Area Schools, Comprehensive Counseling, LLC, and the LMAS Health Department.
