MUNICIPALITY DEMAND SIDE MANAGEMENT Introduction As it is a prime consideration, that Energy Conservation is required everywhere, so it gets applied to the Municipalities (Municipal corporations) & Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). Municipalities constitute various sectors of energy utilisation, like Street lighting, Water pumping, Sewage pumping, Buildings, etc. And so, the Energy Conservation Measures can be very well applied in these sectors of energy utilisation. Municipal Demand Side Management (MuDSM) is devised to take care of the most common and other issues which are seen as a hurdle by the Municipality to shift itself towards the Energy efficient zone from the existing situation of high amount of energy consumption.
Sectors EESL has identified some of the key areas of Municipalities where the MuDSM projects are taken up;
Drinking Water Pumping: Water pumping is the most energy consuming segment of the Municipality. From the process of pumping of river water in intake wells, to the booster pumps at the distribution levels, via the filtration plants, increase of the energy efficiency is done by installing suitable star rated energy efficiency pumps, thereby reducing the energy consumption. Also the submersible pumps, which are installed in a large percentage among the varieties of pumps is given concern. And even the various other facilities like the indoor lights, fans and various other equipments used in the buildings of the pump house may be taken into account with the view of reducing their energy consumption. Street lighting: The next major segment is Street lighting (about 40% of the total energy consumption) in the Municipality. Though after usual energy audit, the present day trend of replacement with LED lights is proposed, other options like replacing with the Induction lamps, CFL lams, etc. which if intends to be the best and reasonable replacement solution is also suggested. Buildings: A considerable amount of Energy can be saved in the buildings of the municipality such as, Municipal Office, Hospitals, Auditorium, etc. The procedure of the detailed energy audit is performed at these sites and the possibilities if the consumption can be reduced is performed by options like retrofitting, replacing of lights, fans, ACs and other equipments. Sewage pumps: There is an estimated energy saving of about % in the Sewage Pumping houses. Various types of pumps and the motor performance is measured and analyzed, according to which suitable star rated energy efficiency pumps are suggested. EESL, not only replaces the
pumps, but also looks for other ECMs like increasing power factor, modifying the existing constructed channels and sumps for a better functioning.
