PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Friends, Sharing the First Narayever president role with Hart Schwartz allows us to divide certain responsibilities. We co-wrote the presidents’ message in the last issue of the newsletter. Starting with this issue, we will be taking turns writing this column. This one is written by me, Avi Schonbach. I would like to start by thanking those who contributed to the success of our services during the High Holidays. Marsha Frydenberg, our director of administration, assisted by Janis Seftel and Maya Schonbach, put in many weeks of effort organizing and preparing for the High Holidays. Rabbi Elkin tirelessly ensured that services at the shul ran smoothly; likewise Rabbi Weiss did his magic at the JCC. Sabrina Friedman, our Director of Family and Youth Engagement, organized services and programs for families and children. Roz Train, our volunteer High Holidays Coordinator, worked closely with Marsha on the details of this massive endeavor. Thank you very much to the many volunteers who made our High Holiday services successful by ushering, helping with security, setting up, organizing meal matching, leading services, being Gabbai, giving the Dvar Torah, blowing the shofar, delivering the Yom Kippur appeal, giving out the honours, providing alternative programs for adults, providing services and programs for families, children, youth and teens, organizing the Daily Bread Food Bank drive, and by sponsoring the apples and honey at the shul and honey cake after the Yom Kippur service. Finally, thank you for attending our services and for being so generous with your donations to the Daily Bread Food Bank, to our Yom Kippur fund which supports social causes in Israel, here in Toronto and wherever disasters strike, and with your donations to our shul itself on Rosh Hashanah. As a new co-president I’ve become more aware of the tensions that arise in response to events and changes in our community. For example, there are varied opinions about the balance between paid professional prayer leaders and volunteer shlichei tsibur on the High Holidays. Another example is our shul renovation project. Changes to the building, as pursued by the Building Task Force, are not embraced by all. Some object to the cost, the design, or the impact the renovations will have on our neighbours. Conversely, many of our congregants are anxiously waiting for our old beautiful shul to be made accessible, with improved infrastructure (have you been too warm during services?), better programming space, and an area to be able to meet privately with our rabbi.

1

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Israel, of course, provides another source of disagreement. We had a request not to allow speakers associated with the New Israel Fund of Canada at the shul nor donate to that organization, because the New Israel Fund American organization has in the past provided support for Adalah, an Arab legal centre which advocates for Palestinian rights and has taken strong positions against Israel as a Jewish state. On the other hand, others in our community are members and supporters of the New Israel Fund of Canada and believe its programs advance social justice in Israel. In many cases being right or wrong depends on one’s perspective. I encourage people to be open minded, listen to the “other side”, and engage in open and sincere discussion of the issues. To quote from Donniel Hartman’s Yom Kippur message: “This year, I will begin with the sin of certainty. The certainty that I have the truth and others do not. The certainty that I am right and others wrong. The certainty that I am good and others bad. The certainty that I love my country and others do not. Truth, knowledge, and enlightenment will only grow when I expose my certainty to the critique of others.” A New Year wish of mine is that regardless of disagreements, we are able to share our diverse viewpoints in a safe environment--one that allows a healthy discourse among friends, and one in which, in spite of our differences, we can harmoniously and respectfully remain part of our vibrant and caring Narayever community.

RABBI’S MESSAGE

Dear Friends, If there’s one Jewish joke that our people like to tell, it’s the story about the Jew who is stranded alone on a desert island and builds two synagogues — the one he goes to, and the one he wouldn’t be seen dead in. Why is this one of the most well known Jewish jokes? Why do we find it funny? There is something self-mocking in this joke, a sardonic or even cynical reflection on our propensity as Jews to be disunited, and to define ourselves as much by what we’re not as by what we actually are. It is often easier to articulate what we’re not than what we are. We may know, for example, that we’re “not Orthodox”. That’s fine, but then what exactly is our understanding of Torah as God’s revelation? Do we consider any aspects of Jewish tradition to be obligatory? How do we incorporate Jewish learning into our lives? We may know that we’re “not Reform”. That’s fine, but then what is our approach to intermarriage and the place of interfaith families in our community? Does the Jewish embrace of modernity pose any challenges for Jewish continuity? How do we implement the value of social justice in our communities and in society? We may know that we’re “not humanist”. That’s fine, but then what do we think and believe about God? Who is God? Where is God? What role does She play in our lives? Narayever calls itself “traditional-egalitarian”. That little hyphen both links and separates two world views that we continually struggle to keep in balance – a complicated task because neither half of the equation even on its own is simple and clear and consistent. Sometimes we have to make decisions about what we do as a community that force us to define what we mean by that term. I personally believe that is a healthy process for us, even as it can be very challenging given the competing values at stake and the diversity of our membership. In my experience, people in many different faith and ethnic communities bemoan their own lack of unity on even very basic, fundamental principles. I’ve certainly heard that sentiment from many Christians and Muslims over the years. They presumably have their own version of the “shul they wouldn’t be seen dead in” joke.

43

RABBI’S MESSAGE

Klal Yisrael is the aspirational term we use to capture the totality of the Jewish people. It’s a term about what unites us, but often it is cited in service of getting other people to do what you think is right. Our reality is that we are a very diverse people. Our goal should not be to erase those differences, but rather that each segment of the community should continually grow in and deepen its understanding of who it is, rather than focus on the easier task of identifying who it is not. On another note, I will be on sabbatical for 10 weeks during the period covered by this newsletter (see page 5 for more details). I will be using this time away to do some reading and writing that my regular rabbinic duties do not allow for, and also to have a bit of R&R. I appreciate the congregation’s willingness to support my taking a sabbatical, and all the volunteers who will, I know, keep things running smoothly in my absence.

Rabbi Ed Elkin [email protected]

RABBI ED’S SABBATICAL We are delighted that our hard working rabbi is going to be taking some time to nourish his soul this winter. The rabbi’s current seven year contract provides for a ten week sabbatical period this year, and another ten weeks in 2018/19. Rabbi Ed will be using this time to engage in the kind of deep learning that he is otherwise unable to do because of the many ongoing demands of being a congregational rabbi, and also to have some well deserved rest. We are confident that he will come back to us refreshed and energized and ready to teach and lead us once again, as was the case after his last sabbatical in 2011. The rabbi’s sabbatical will run from December 10, 2017 to February 20, 2018. All our Shabbat services, both Friday night and Shabbat morning, will run as usual, with the help of our wonderful volunteers. Sunday minyan will also continue as usual. The rabbi’s absence is a great opportunity for us to remind ourselves that volunteerism is at the core of our identity as a shul community. If you have any questions or concerns about the sabbatical, please contact us. Avi Schonbach and Hart Schwartz Co-Presidents [email protected]

YOM KIPPUR & ROSH HASHANAH PLEDGES Thank you to everyone who has already fulfilled their Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah pledges. For those who haven’t, please take a moment to fulfil your pledge now. Tax receipts for 2017 will be issued in February for all pledges paid for by the end of December. The Narayever is committed to addressing poverty, environmental issues and emergency relief as well as providing the highest quality of programming at the shul. We need your help to support our efforts. Your pledge can be honoured by: • Mailing a cheque to 187 Brunswick Ave. M5S 2M4 • Calling the shul office with your credit card number at 416.927.0546, or • going online to: CanadaHelpshttps://www.canadahelps.org/en/explore/charities/?q=narayever Your support is appreciated.

YOUTH

OUR SHINSHINIM ARE SETTLING IN We have been integrating into the downtown community for the past two months and we’re loving it! We really like all the institutions we are part of and are keenly feeling the warmth coming from everyone around us. For this, we are so thankful.

In the months ahead we are looking forward to bringing our Israel to the Narayever - we’ll be bringing Israeli current events and culture, and will include our perspectives. The Narayever community is invited to our first current events/discussion program on Sunday November 26 and our second Movie Night on Tuesday December 12, both from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Until now, we have been getting a taste of shul life, participating in the holidays and beginning to present our D’var Yisrael on Shabbat. We can’t wait to get more and more involved in everything that goes on at the Narayever week to week.

-Gal & Itay

We have been really enjoying our time with the Bat/ Bar Mitzvah class. We’ll be playing a huge role leading the new bi-monthly Shutafim programs (for grades 2 to 6) and are so excited to be taking part in the Chalutzim teen programs and the programs for families this year, too. Check out the Youth Article for more details and info on pages 8 and 9.

TEFILLAH PROJECT 5778

WELCOMING OUR NEW TEFILLAH COACH The Narayever is delighted to announce that the Tefillah Project which we began last year will continue in 5778, under the leadership of our new Tefillah Coach Ruth Rohn. Ruth is a long time member of the Narayever, and an experienced Jewish educator in the wider Toronto community, with a particular expertise in the area of tefillah. Ruth introduces herself to us in her new capacity with the article below. This initiative serves the vision of Narayever as a participatory shul in which members from a range of backgrounds step forward and lead davening. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience but want to improve your skills and understanding, please feel welcome and encouraged to contact Ruth to set up an appointment to learn about tefillah and develop your davening skills. -Rabbi Ed Elkin and Harvey Savage, Ritual Committee Chair

TEFILLAH COACH: Ruth Rohn When we come to shul at the Narayever, we are fortunate to be led in tefillah by members of our community who have stepped up to be our ba’alei tefillah, prayer-leaders, that day. These individuals, as well as those of us who make up the congregation, are performing a sacred task. Engaging in tefillah is, at one level, a give and take between the prayer-leader and the congregants. At another level, it’s an exploration of the Jewish wisdom embedded in our siddur. On yet another level, it offers an opportunity to transcend our everyday experience, to perhaps encounter the divine, within and beyond us. Actualizing this possibility can be frustratingly intermittent and elusive, but the potential for it is always there. With the aim of helping us derive more from our tefillah experience, I will be serving as our new tefillah coach. As I envision it, my role will involve exploring means by which we might enrich the ruach/spirit and meaning of our tefillah experience and enhance our engagement in tefillah, whether as leaders or as participants. You are invited to contribute to these efforts by sharing your comments, suggestions and questions with me. I will be available to teach anyone who would like to learn how to lead, or more actively participate in, any part of our service.

BUILDING TASK FORCE

BUILDING RENEWAL PROJECT The process to renew our building and make it accessible has been underway for years, and that process continues. Our application at the Ontario Municipal Board for zoning variances is now scheduled for a third and, we expect, final day of hearings on January 18.

We must, of course, raise the money for this project, and that’s a daunting task. Fundraising is under the direction of the Capital Campaign Committee co-chaired by Mark Guttman and Anne Golden. That committee has been developing a strategy that encompasses the full range of fundraising methods. The overall project cost, including construction, relocation, contingencies and relevant fees, is currently set at $4 million. For the present, the Annual General Meeting on June 11, 2017 approved an $80 per person building levy, to help defray design costs in the coming months.

It is disappointing that the city’s complex approval process has taken such a long time, and is still not complete. Nevertheless, we remain optimistic that our building plan will be approved. During the recent High Holiday services, our shul leaders spoke movingly about the need for accessibility at our building for those with mobility and other disability challenges. The plan for our shul, as developed by the Building Task Force, provides that much needed accessibility, as well as improved programming and administrative space (including an office for our rabbi), and upgrading and replacement of building systems such as heating and air conditioning that are no longer functioning efficiently.

Earlier boards and executives spent much time on these issues. The current Building Task Force has spent the past four years exploring options and consulting with the Congregation in order to develop a plan that meets our needs, and is respectful of the neighborhood and sensitive to our neighbors. We all hope that the accomplishment of our goals is finally in sight, and that our beloved shul community can look forward to many more inspiring years in our downtown location.

Assuming that approval from the municipal authorities is forthcoming in the coming calendar year, the next step will be a Special General Meeting of the congregation, in which the plan and accompanying financial details will be presented to the members of the Narayever for their vote of approval.

SOCIAL ACTION

REFLECTING ON OUR REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP Our partners in the medical and dental world have been extremely helpful and generous with their time, often discounting the costs of their services.

When I was asked if I would write a reflection on our refugee sponsorship at our half way point, I was more than happy to accept and began to pull together all of the wonderful progress that Mustafa and his parents and grandparents have made in the last six months. But as I started to do this, my 10-year old daughter came into my office and asked me to read with her.

As has been reported in Narayever Net, the immediate needs of the family including permanent housing, clothing, and navigating the TTC have been resolved. Most recently, we have been working with our family to help them interact with the banking system. It’s all been an adventure for them; the language, culture, weather and school. There have been challenges along the way, but each time we got back on track.

At that moment, I was struck by the enormous significance of this sponsorship. For a moment, I thought about what these people have gone through, what they left behind, who was still in Syria, and little Mustafa whose short life has been spent in unimaginable conditions. What separates my daughter from Mustafa is simply an accident of birth.

The core sponsorship group – eight congregants who bravely and kindly stepped up to help the family with their settlement needs (sometimes on a daily basis) – has been incredible. A big thank you to Elaine Marans, Micky Fraterman, Laraine Naft, Leora Wise, Ricki Sharpe, Stacia Rubinovitch, Mona Kornberg, and Jonathan Zamir. Each has been helping with a different aspect of the settlement process: schools, English skills, financial literacy, and endless other tasks. Their patience, compassion, and energy are inspiring. The group is also indebted to the generous contribution of our two dedicated translators, Nada and Rayane, who offered their services free of charge and without whom we would have been completely stuck.

For a few seconds, I allowed myself to think about being a mother with two children waiting in fear, feeling helpless, not knowing what tomorrow would bring. Would I be able to read with my daughter? What books would I bring? Would I really bring books? What about food? You can’t eat words, Natalie! What about…and then the moment was over and I returned to the task at hand. It was simply too difficult and too painful to think about all of that any further. But I was glad I had let my mind wander because it reminded me that this was not simply a task to be checked off on a to-do list, but rather part of a large endeavor where lives were given a second chance and a child was able to grow up in freedom. It reminded me of the importance of empathy and the necessity of social action. Perhaps before you read further, you can take a minute to reflect on what our shul has accomplished and what it means to you.

Our family is grateful and appreciative for all of the support they have received from the Narayever community and its friends. For those of us who have developed a closer relationship with our family, the last six months have been a privilege and a pleasure. -Natalie Fingerhut Refugee Sub-Committee of the Social Action Committee

And now to our family… For the past few months, our family has been focused on learning English. Mustafa is busy learning his colours and is enjoying his new school. We have also been busy attending to various health and dental needs.

SOCIAL ACTION

REFLECTING ON A TRIP TO POLAND (An Excerpt From A Kol Nidre Tzedakah Appeal, MNjcc Friday, September 29, 2017) by Miriam Diamond This past July, I visited Lublin, Poland. Jewish history in Lublin dates to the 14th century and by the 16th century it became known as the “Jewish Oxford”. Lublin was the location of the largest Yeshiva in the world from 1930 to 1939.

Majdanek was part of the “Final Solution” – killing Jews as a way to deal permanently with the “Jewish problem”. Half a million people passed through Majdanek. Between 80,000 to 200,000 children, adults and elderly from Poland and across Nazi-occupied Europe were murdered there. A walk through Majdanek is a walk that confronts you with unimaginable cruelty at an industrial scale. One walks past 80,000 pairs of shoes meticulously collected from the murdered.

A trip to Lublin today includes a tour of the recently re-opened Chachmei Yeshiva and sites where former synagogues once stood. The trip also includes the concentration camp Majdanek. Despite having visited other Jewish memorials in Europe, I was unprepared for the emotional impact of Majdanek.

While Lublin has taken great care to preserve Majdanek as a site that is visited by many Jews and non-Jews, the site of the Lipowa work camp in Lublin is now an entertainment complex. I was unsettled to learn that the hotel in which I stayed was transformed during the war by the Nazi occupiers into the “German House”. The restaurant in which I enjoyed breakfast was frequented by SS officials and officers. (Cont’d on next page.)

Majdanek extends over 2.7 square kilometers or about 100 times the area of the Sky Dome roof. It is located only 4 km from the city centre and is immediately adjacent to a residential area of Lublin with apartment buildings overlooking the site.

SOCIAL ACTION

REFLECTING ON A TRIP TO POLAND (Cont’d) After leaving Majdanek and before we took a taxi to the Warsaw airport, I went to the washroom of the hotel, wept, said Kaddish, and regained my professional composure. During the 2 hour taxi ride, the driver decried the political conditions in Poland today but voiced his optimism for the next election. In 2016, Poles elected a majority right-wing populist party that is undermining constitutional rights and freedoms, despite the opposition of hundreds of thousands of Poles.

globe are experiencing the rise of populism as charismatic leaders blame “others” for the woes of economic stagnation, unemployment, and dispossession. What is the connection between our obligation to practice Tzedakah, my recounting of past actions of intolerance, and today’s actions of intolerance? I fervently believe that practicing Tzedakah, seeking justice, is an action against intolerance. In fact, I remain optimistic, and passionately so, that actions of Tzedakah to reduce poverty and inequality, to enable education, and to empower the dispossessed, contributes to a stable, pluralist and tolerant society. I must remain optimistic and I must translate my beliefs into actions because I chose to have children. It is my obligation to ensure a tolerant society for them, for their children, and for all children. Not to act for Tzedakah is an abrogation of my responsibility as a parent and as someone who has so richly benefited from living in our relatively tolerant Canadian society.

What is the relationship between the past of only two generations ago and today? It is a rise of intolerance and the ability of powerful leaders to exploit intolerance in service of self-aggrandizement. Erna Paris, in her book “From Tolerance to Tyranny” details the transition of Spain under the Moors from 711 to 1492 from a tolerant and intellectually vibrant, multicultural society, to a closed, intolerant autocracy. Paris cautions that societies can shift from tolerance to intolerance with surprising speed. Intolerance feeds on inequality, ignorance, a feeling of dispossession, and a lack of critical and independent thinking. As discussed by Pankaj Mishra in “Age of Anger – A History of the Present”, today countries around the

DONATING SECURITIES TO THE NARAYEVER When I was growing up in Toronto, it was the custom for parents to take their son or daughter’s b’nai mitzvah money and use it to purchase Bell Canada stock. Often referred to as the widow and orphan’s investment, the stock was safe and secure with steady, if unspectacular growth. Through the years, Bell Canada became Bell Canada Enterprises and the stock was split into smaller shares.

that would be added to your income. By donating your shares to the Narayever, you do not have to pay any capital gains. The Narayever would receive the full amount of $5,000 and you would receive a charitable donation tax receipt for $5,000, which would result in a tax credit of up to $2,300 (depending on your tax bracket). You can also donate mutual funds, not just individual stocks. If you intend to make a charitable donation in your will, doing so is more beneficial as it will reduce probate fees to your estate.

I used my stock to fund post- secondary education, but many people still have theirs. As you can imagine, the increase in price over 40 or 50 years is significant. In Canada, when you sell a stock that is not part of a registered investment plan, if there is an increase in price from the original cost, you are taxed on 50% of the gain. This is called a capital gain. You may have stock from another company that you purchased some time ago and has had a significant increase. Or perhaps you made a good choice on a stock purchase a few years ago and have watched it increase in value.

Proper tax planning in this regard is essential. The capital gain exclusion only applies to non-registered investments. Usually, but not always, the investment with the highest gain should be donated. In all cases, seek proper legal advice. You can also contact Stephen Benjamin for more information about making such donations to the shul at [email protected]

Let’s say you invested $1,000 in a stock that is now worth $5,000. There is a capital gain of $4,000, and $2,000 of

HIGH HOLIDAY VOLUNTEERS Thank you to all who took the initiative to volunteer, who readily accepted when asked to volunteer and who worked as employees or contractors to help prepare for and lead services and programs at the shul on Brunswick and at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre.

new home in Ottawa. Kivi remains responsible for the computer program that prepares individualized tickets for each member family. During his term as the High Holiday Coordinator, Kivi created meticulously detailed plans for almost every aspect of the services at the MNjcc, made those services fully wheelchair accessible and included Braille and large print prayer books. For all of this, and in particular for his kindness and generosity, we, his successors, are very grateful. Kathryn Polson Ferguson has also moved away from Toronto yet continues to organize the food drive for the Daily Bread Food Bank, remotely, then comes to services in Toronto to personally supervise the erev Yom Kippur donations and pick-up by Daily Bread.

Thank you to all who came to daven with us and to those who brought children to our services and programs for families, children, youth and teens. Thank you to all who contributed to our food drive for the Daily Bread Food Bank, who opened your homes for meal-matching and who contributed to our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur fundraising drives. Special thanks to Rabbi Ed, mentor and spiritual leader extraordinaire. Special thanks also to Marsha Frydenberg, Kivi Shapiro and Kathryn Polson Ferguson. Marsha Frydenberg is Narayever’s Director of Administration. Without her year-long efforts planning and last minute attention to detail, none of this would be possible. Although Kivi Shapiro no longer lives in Toronto, he continues to assist Narayever over the internet from his

ROSH HASHANAH APPEAL This year we will be acknowledging all donors to the Rosh Hashanah appeal in a future newsletter. If you do not wish to have your name listed, please contact the office. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Todah Rabah! Your generosity during the Rosh Hashanah Appeal, which specifically raises additional funds for the shul’s ongoing operations, is greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone, members as well as non-members at the MNjcc and the shul, who pledged funds to assist the shul to keep our membership fees and High Holiday ticket prices as low as possible, and to offer an enhanced level of programming and support for both adults and youth.

Lili Little and Lucille Narun Co-chairs, Fundraising Committee [email protected]

Thank you to all the people who helped collect the pledges at the shul and the MNjcc. If you were not able to make a donation on Rosh Hashanah, you can still do so by calling the shul office and indicating that your donation be assigned to the Rosh Hashanah Appeal Fund.

Narayever’s Yom Kippur Food Drive

SIMHAT TORAH HONOUREES We congratulate our Hatan Torah for 5778, David Cheater, and our Kallat Bereshit for 5778, Francine Dick. David has been a strong leader of the services we provide to seniors at Kensington Gardens Nursing Home twice/ month. David also created a new High Holiday prayer book for Kensington. In this way, he exemplifies the value of service so central to our shul. Francine has volunteered for the shul in various capacities…organizing our social programming such as the annual Blue Jays excursion, preparing breakfast each week for the Sunday minyan, helping out with services and programs at Castleview Wychwood long term care facility, and lending her financial expertise to help shul members understand how they can help the shul, while gaining important tax advantages at the same time.

This year, during our annual Yom Kippur Food Drive, we collected 2,093 lbs. of food for the Daily Bread Food Bank. Thank you to Kathryn Polson Ferguson who organized this essential project and to the many who contributed so generously.

Yasher Koach, David and Francine!

All donations are greatly needed and appreciated. Yasher Koach!
