Visual Inspection (VT) Visual Inspection or Visual Testing (VT) requires line-of-sight contact with the portion of the specimen to be inspected, adequate illumination of the test specimen, a thorough understanding of the nature and origin of discontinuities and potential defects within the test object, and familiarity with the specifications controlling the inspection process. Unless the specimen cannot be examined visually, visual testing should be the first part of any NDT examination. Visual testing presents several real advantages: simplicity, rapidity, low cost, minimal training and equipment requirements, and the ability to be performed while the specimen is being used or processed. Mechanical or optical aids may be necessary to perform visual testing. Before any mechanical or optical aids are used, the specimen should be well illuminated and its surface cleaned. Often the inspection locates areas where other NDT techniques need to be applied, or areas where the mechanical and optical aids may provide superior inspection. Often visual inspection eliminates the need for further testing and the associated costs. This method is used to inspect a variety of product forms including castings, forgings, machined components and weldments. The structural steel, automotive, petrochemical, power generation, and aerospace industries are a few of the many types of end users utilizing visual inspection. The Level I and II visual testing course requires no prior training or experience by the student, and indeed could be a great foundational starting place for all inspectors. Training material is presented in a manner that promotes understanding and the ability to make immediate application. Basic courses are ideal for NDT trainees who must have Level I and II training in order to qualify for certification as well as facility personnel who are responsible for or oversee the application of testing or Quality Control/Quality Assurance.
Course Content B1110 Visual Inspection Course Level I and II. This course provides accurate, current and thorough training that leads directly to the ability of the student to perform accurate Visual Inspection. Level I and II material is combined and presented in a single, 24-hour classroom course. Major subjects are covered from the perspective of an entry level student: • Basic steel making and metal forming processes including how discontinuities are developed within each of the metal forming methods. • Primary and secondary forming and joining processes are explained, with highlight information regarding type, location and formation tendencies of discontinuities. • In-service discontinuities are explored in relation to stress and corrosion in its various forms. • Tools for the visual inspector are explained and pictured. • Major forms of nondestructive testing are defined and discussed. Familiarization with and proper usage of instruments and hands-on exercises are emphasized. Lecture notes, text book and necessary testing materials are provided.

Lesson-by-lesson quizzes monitor progress and all three evaluation examinations (General, Specific and Practical) are administered by a qualified ASNT ACCP Level III. Alternative Course Options B1111-WB Visual Inspection Level I and II. Online Course Online courses are ideally suited for Level II technicians that are in need of refresher training or for trainees that have other means of gaining hands-on experience. All online courses include the "body of knowledge" recommended by ASNT and includes a final exam that can be utilized as the method's General Examination. Specific and Practical Evaluation exams are not included in the online course but can be scheduled for oncampus administration by one of our qualified instructors. Ask for "on-site" examination options if travel to our campus presents a problem.
