Meningomyelocele Neural Tube Defects By: Nofil Maknojia Many children with spina bifida do well in school, but they may need some help along the way, especially if they have shunts to drain the hydrocephaly They also might have trouble making decisions. There are activities that children can do both at home and at school to help with these problems. An IEP is very beneficial for children Neural Tube Defects, because it will help children develop important academic and social skills at school. 504 Plan accommodations may be needed to give the child an opportunity to perform at the same level as their peers. A 504 Plan may include the child’s assistive technology needs or state that a child will need a wheelchair to use during the school day or need assistance to and from class from an aide. the most common NTD is spinal bifida Spina bifida is a split of a section of the vertebral arches. This split may be isolated or occur with a protruding sac that may contain a portion of the spinal cord. Spina Bifida Occulta The most common form of spinal bifida The most benign Approximately 10% of the general population has the hidden separation of the vertebral arches Individuals with spinal bifida oculata do not have: abnormalities visible on their backs a sac or protruding spinal cord or any symptoms. Encephalocele Pictures occurs when the neural tube does not close completely during pregnancy The result is an opening in the mid line of the upper part of the skull or the back of the skull. The vast majority of encephaloceles occur in the occipital region of the brain Affected children have mental retardation, hydrocephalus or excess fluid in the brain cavities, spastic diplegia (a form of cerebral palsy), and/or seizures. Most Common NTDS and Their Prevalence Encephalocele- approximately 60 in 100,000 births Anencephaly- approximately 10 in 100,000 births Spina Bifida- approximately 20 in 100,000 births. The Cause of NTDs The cause of Neural Tube Disorders is still debated. However, there are conditions that are known to be associated with NTDS. These conditions include: chromosomal disorders maternal exposure to the antiepileptic drugs vaporic and carbamozepine and the acne medication Accutane excessive maternal use of alcohol, maternal exposure to hypothermia and maternal diabetes.
