In 1993 Daimler-Benz AG (makers of Mercedes Benz) partnered with SMH (makers of the Swatch brand of watches) to create a funky city car that would be engineered by Daimler and designed by Swatch. The smart car debuted in 1998 in nine European countries and was instantly popular. New models came out in 2003 and 2004 but they failed to deliver on expectations and the brand was close to being discontinued. Instead, Daimler went back to the original, introducing a new slightly larger model in 2006 that took the world by storm. On January 16, 2008, the United States became the 37th country to sell the smart car. Nearly 25,000 smart fortwos were sold in the United States in 2008. Despite its diminutive size, the vehicle has earned the highest front and side crashworthiness ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and received high marks in crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including a top five-star crash test rating for side impact protection and roof strength.
