Opening Prayer God of all the living, in the resurrection of Christ Jesus you have given us the life which even death cannot destroy. Remember your unshakeable promise and strengthen us to live in this world as your new creation. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. AMEN Hello Everyone and Peace Thanks to Fr. Joe for this week's reflection on the scriptures. As we near the end of the Church's liturgical year, the Sunday readings focus on thoughts of everlasting life and resurrection. Belief in the resurrection of the dead came fairly late in Judaism. The book of Daniel, composed about the year 165 B.C. speaks of the belief in the resurrection of the dead. The book of Wisdom, written about the last half of the 1st Century, speaks of immortality, and while the Books of Maccabees were not in the Jewish canon of scripture, the Church has always recognized its inspiration and importance. The councils of Florence and Trent cited 2 Mac. 12:46 as one of its scriptural references when it formulated its doctrine on faith in a Purgatory. The story of the seven brothers and their mother shows that these martyrs were followers of the Torah and believed in a life after death. But life after death has always been an "unknown" to mankind, and the unknown is our enemy. We lose control when faced with the fact that we don't know "the day or the hour." It's hard to plan for a surprise, the unexpected. We all sense this kind of impotence when it comes to our future health or other critical circumstances. It's easier to live for the day, enjoy this world to the full and try to make life as comfortable as possible. The Sadducees were people like that. Since they didn't hold to a belief in resurrection they made this world the source of all their energy. In their story of the woman who marries seven times they are hoping to show how a belief in resurrection is foolish. They hope to show that Jesus and anyone else who believe in an afterlife are foolish too. Jesus tells us that we are a people of hope: hope in the promise of a God who loves us so very much and who wants so much more for us than what we can see and experience on this earth. Everything we do on this earth should be in living in that hope. Jesus lived His life fully, celebrating each moment, each encounter, and each relationship with joy. He embraced human experience, drank deeply of human emotions, was nourished and comforted by human love. But He was always looking into the eyes of His Father. He was always conscious of the circle of His human existence, leading Him from God back to God. He never lost His sense of direction and purpose and in that sense He was prepared for whatever came. His love of the Father was integrated into all that He said and did and became. There was no event, no person, no circumstance that ever separated Him from His Father. So we, too, must learn to live fully to love fully, to journey trustingly. In the face of our repeated failures, and even more, in the face of the evil that so often overwhelms us, we search for human answers and defenses but there are none. There is really only one answer and that is the leap of faith. We see the Risen Lord so often in the distance and through tear filled and clouded eyes. We hesitate we wonder how He could forget our betrayals we feel tarnished and unworthy but we know He is standing there waiting, welcoming, offering us the safe harbor of His embrace so we take the leap of faith into the open arms of His love and finally know peace. If we try to live each day in that spirit of faith, it should certainly free us from fear of dying. But it should also change the way that we live. And I believe that's the important part of the Gospel Message. We have been given the wonderful gift of life. We are to treasure it, to nurture it and to nourish it - and this gift becomes more precious and valuable only when it is shared by us, generously and freely. The Lord calls us to live this life with great hope and faith. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Life and the Resurrection. And, we believe that when we die, we are so fully engulfed in God's embrace that we become a part of his existence in ways we could never imagine and in ways that we can never describe. It is because of this that we can articulate the good news that living our lives in love has an eternal connectedness with living on in God after death. So when the moment comes when we do meet Him face to face and see Him reach out to lead us across the threshold of death into His house of light and life, it should not be much of a shock or a surprise. He will not appear as a stranger or an enemy, but as a friend and companion. Then we will be possessed by His beauty, His life, and His love, fully and forever.

Please plan on joining us on Wednesdays at seven as we continue our journey with Fr. Joe to the spiritual reading of the Gospel of Mark. During this month of November, we will remember all of those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. At the back of the church, you will find a Book of Remembrance, please inscribe the name of anyone who you would like to remember at Mass. At each Mass during the month of November, the Book of Remembrance will be brought to the altar during the offertory, and the Mass will be celebrated in memory of all those whose names are inscribed in the Book of Remembrance. Sunday, November 24 is the Feast of Christ the King. It is the last Sunday in Ordinary time, and it signals for us the beginning of the season of Advent. On that Sunday, weather permitting, we will begin with procession in honor of Jesus, King of the Universe. The procession will begin at the garden behind the Chapel and continue for a short while down Ridgewood Avenue, turning onto Clark and entering the Chapel to begin Mass. Please dress warmly. Also on November 24 at 5pm will be the Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Worship Service. As one community, let us all give thanks to God for all the blessings He has bestowed on us. The worship service will be at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 73 S. Fullerton Ave., Montclair, NJ. Check out the flyer by clicking here. We will again be collecting supermarket gift cards and frozen turkey for less fortunate families in our area this year for Thanksgiving. These items will be collected until November 24th. St. Francis of Assisi American National Catholic Church will celebrate our Thanksgiving Day mass on Thursday, November 28 at 10 AM. Please join us as our parish family gives thanks to God for all the many blessings we have received throughout the year and to ask God to continue to bless us with his grace and favor. Sunday, December 1, is the first Sunday of Advent, the liturgical season of Advent is provided for us by the church as a four-week period of preparation to celebrate Christmas, the Feast of the Incarnation, and to encourage and pray for that day when Christ our Savior will come again when every tear shall be wiped away and we shall see our God as He truly is. On Wednesday evenings during the season of Advent, we will gather at 7PM in the Chapel in prayer and contemplation to prepare ourselves spiritually for the feast of Christmas. We will use a variety of services including Taize a prayer. On the second Wednesday of Advent, we will have a Mass of Healing and Reconciliation, with the opportunity for individual confession. On the third Wednesday of Advent, we will join the universal Church, in praying the "O" antiphons as our joy in anticipation increases for the great celebration of Christmas. The last Wednesday of Advent will be an opportunity for us, the parish of St. Francis of Assisi, to conclude the season of Advent with the celebration of Midnight Mass at 12 midnight. Please join our parish family as we prepare for these wonderful celebrations in the life of the Church. We have made our quota of 20 accounts for our CAP program at Boiling Springs. Thank you for all who participated in the program. Please support our "Change for Change" program this coming November. A container will be placed on the organ each Sunday and we encourage you to drop any loose change into it. We will be depositing all the change we have collected on December 7 to support our charitable programs. Rahway Food For Friends, a soup kitchen and food pantry in Rahway, NJ needs our support in continuing their service to our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Perhaps what we can do is to share our blessings by donating non-perishable food items. If you are willing to donate, we can collect your donations after the mass. Click here to see a complete list of items they need. For more information about Rahway Food For Friends, click here. Please remember to support the parish in our ministries. You can do so by making an online contribution through Paypal by clicking here. If you cannot make it to Mass on Sundays for whatever reason, please consider going to Mass on Saturday afternoon, 5PM at St. Clare of Assisi American National Catholic Church. St. Clare is located at 36 Gould Street, Verona, NJ 07044. We are still looking for altar servers and lectors. Please let Brother Geety and Lou know respectively of your interests. President's Corner Thanks to the multitude who attended St.Clare's Halloween party. It was a full house & great planning by our own Abigail & Maddie. Fun & camaraderie was experienced by all in praise of our God. - Mike Perrone Jr. Religious Education The St. Francis of Assisi children's religious education program is fully inclusive, as all children are welcomed to receive the sacraments. The model for the parish is an "Open Sunday School" where no child, or family, will be excluded, yet rather a prayerful and dynamic learning experience about Jesus, and his teachings, will be celebrated. We are all God's children, so come and rejoice in the love of God! For parents who wish to include their children in our religious education program, we have a sign-up sheet at the back of the church. Los saduceos eran gente as.
