Doctor Buzz Burrell and his wife Lauren are very excited to have opened a Medical Centre in the heart of Renwick that will cater to the people in Renwick and the surrounding rural communities, particularly people who were immobile and vulnerable. Dr Burrell hopes he and his staff are able to make house calls for people who are stuck at home alone. Only ten minutes from Blenheim, people will be able to see the doctors at Renwick if they wish. Renwick has not had a GP for more than 10 years after the late Dr Anne Brown who was the sole doctor for 15 years, moved to Springlands Health. The new practice will run slightly differently, with nurses taking more responsibility and ensuring people who need to be seen get top priority. Dr Burrell, who co-ordinates the Otago University rural medical immersion programme at the Wairau Hospital, wants to foster a strong teaching focus at the new centre to strengthen the university’s presence in Marlborough. Technology is at the forefront in the surgery. The practice will use patient management software which eliminates transcription error. It will link into the ereferral system where Dr Burrell can refer a patient to a hospital specialist with the click of a button. From June the surgery’s telehealth forum will go live and Dr Burrell will be able to video conference with other GPs for second opinions on tricky diagnoses. The Practice, located in a converted villa in Renwick’s main street, has two examination rooms, a reception area, a procedures room with double doors that open out into an ambulance bay, a nurse’s room and a childrens’ play area. Off-street parking is available as well. If you would like to enroll please click here to find out more or call 03 572 8838.

The higher your blood pressure is, the higher your risk of health problems. It puts extra strain on your arteries and on your heart. Over time, this strain can cause the arteries to become to become thicker and less flexible, or weaken. Thicker arteries will narrow, making them more likely to clog up. If an artery becomes completely clogged up (known as a clot), this can lead to a heart attack, stroke, kidney disease or dementia. Read more ›
