NEWSBRIEFS

Chair’s Message - Louise Carrese Dear CEED members: Another year draws to a close, and like many others, this division continues to evolve as we seek ways to respond to our expanded mission. The strategic planning committee charged with reviewing the inclusion of experiential education to our division goals believed that it was critical to our long term viability to broaden the scope of our vision. Redefining who we are and determining how to serve both types of experiential learning practitioners has been a focus of the Board this year. Another goal, developing a new website for CEED, has been a work in progress this fall and went "live" on November 19. Several Board members were involved in editing and updating the various pages. Scott Green at Georgia Tech, our division webmaster is working with colleagues at ASEE on this web project. There are still more revisions being made and we invite your feedback on our "new look". Please contact me by phone (585-475-5459) or email ([email protected]) with your comments and suggestions.

In addition, our promotional brochure is undergoing a "facelift". Deanna Dunn our Communication Chair and Candee Chambers, our 2010 Takacs "Employer of the Year" Award Winner, are collaborating on this project. Our division membership is growing and I extend a warm welcome to those of you receiving your first issue of Newsbriefs! Maureen Barcic, our Treasurer, reports that CEED had 233 members at the end of August. There will be several opportunities for you to join the Board, beginning in February, 2011. We are seeking members who have an interest in serving in the positions listed below. You must have the time and interest in being actively involved in the activities of the Board and able to attend at least two Board meetings per year: one is held during the CIEC in early February and others will vary in location, depending on where Board members are based and the city which is most economical for travel and/or at the site of a conference. This year, Board meetings were held at CIEC (Palm Springs), at SERCEC (Mississippi State) in May and recently in Atlanta. Other meetings may be planned to discuss various projects and are typically handled by conference calls. If you would like to be considered for a position or would like to nominate an individual, please contact me or any Board member to discuss further. Brief descriptions for Board positions are accessible at http://www.asee.org/member-resources/groups/divisions/cooperative-experiential-education/bylaws Open CEED Board positions beginning at the end of CIEC in 2011 are: Chair-Elect Treasurer Awards Chair Chair, Directory of Co-op and Experiential Education Programs Chair, Professional Services Gayle Elliott, Program Chair for CIEC 2011 in San Antonio, is working on the final details for the CEED sessions and the program is one you will not want to miss! For more information and to register, visit the ASEE website at http:// www.asee.org/ciec 2011 I wish you all a wonderful Holiday season and look forward to seeing you in San Antonio. Louise T. Harold Simmons Retires after 30+ years at Georgia Tech

(Harold is shown receiving a special honor from Louise Carrese where funds were provided to create an endowment in Harold’s name to provide books for students at Georgia Tech.)

Since 2003, Harold Simmons has served as the Director, Cooperative Education, within Georgia Tech’s Division of Professional Practice. From 1977 to 1980, he was Assistant Director in the Office of the Registrar at Georgia Tech. Then from 1980 to 1990, he was Assistant Director, and from 1990 to 2002, Associate Director of the Georgia Tech Cooperative Division, the predecessor to the Division of Professional Practice. Harold worked with more than ten thousand co-op students studying engineering, science, and management. During those years the co-op program doubled in the number of students participating and is now one of the largest, optional co-op programs in the United States. Currently, the Cooperative Education Program numbers over 2500 students with job opportunities in more than 600 employers throughout the United States and abroad. Within this program, seven co-op advisors counsel students and work continuously to develop co-op jobs related to the curricula in which the students major. Harold earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from Georgia Tech. Following that degree he served as a line officer in the United States Navy for four years with engineering staff responsibilities and then three years in engineering management with the textile industry. Before returning to Georgia Tech in 1977, he earned a Master of Business Administration and then in 2000, he earned a Master of Arts in English, both degrees from Georgia State University. He also completed twenty years with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve serving at home and abroad in assignments with the Naval Control of Shipping Organization and the Military Sealift Command.

(The Board of Directors of the Cooperative Education and Experiential Division of ASEE gathered in Atlanta on October 19th and 20th to pursue division business AND to celebrate the long and spectacular service of long time professional and exemplary co-op leaders, Harold Simmons. )

Since 1981, he has been a member of the Cooperative Education Division (CED) of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), served as Chair-elect of that division in 2004, and then in 2005 served as chairman of CED, which represents over one hundred engineering co-op programs nationwide. His joint research on co-op work assignments and well-being for the co-op in the workplace has been published in the “Journal of Engineering Education.” science, management, and liberal studies. He has served as program chairman for the Cooperative Education Division at the ASEE Conference for Industry and Education Collaboration and as 2004 Chairman for the Southeastern Regional Cooperative Education Conference. Additionally, Mr. Simmons has been very active in the Georgia Cooperative Education Network and has affiliations with other co-op organizations in the state of Georgia. In addition to responsibilities for managing the co-op program, he is advisor to students who are “Undecided” in engineering, Harold plans to start his retirement by taking a long “sabbatical” to rest, enjoy his grandchildren, to read and to play golf. “Then, I’ll work on some new challenges in consulting, recruiting or real estate,” Simmons added. The Board and the entire membership of CEED wish Harold the best of times during his very active retirement.

Speaking of retirements, honors, awards, and the many good things happening in the lives of our members. CEED Newsbriefs would welcome any information on the goings on within the co-op and experiential community. Send word to [email protected]

CO-OPERATIVE DEPARTMENT

Professor Max B. Robinson, Chairman Cooperative Engineering Education Division American Society for Engineering Education Department of Cooperative Training Fenn College Cleveland 15, Ohio Dear Max: In response to your recent communication concerning your program, I have indicated the order of my choice of the topics for discussion that would benefit, I think, all co-op colleges most. Since I cannot attend the meeting, I suggest that you get some experienced man in the Cooperative Plan, such as Messinger of Cincinnati, Kapp of Drezel, or Flath of S.M.U., to discuss “Personality Aspects.” Having come in contact so much with company representatives and government people considering personality of prime importance in the employment of graduates, I feel that an exhaustive study should be made of this subject. Personally I feel that ability comes first; however, ability without good personality will quite often bring a misfit, and vice versa. I imagine you have become alarmed over the stress that is being put on personality, not only for co-operative undergraduates but for co-operative graduates. Notice that there was an interest in research even back in 1948!

Yours very truly,

J.E. McDaniel Director of Co-Operative Courses JEM: mg

July 23, 1948 Dear Sir: At the meeting of the Division of Cooperative Engineering Education at Austin, Texas, on June 14, a committee was appointed to deal with Civil Service and agency personnel in Washington for the purpose of acquainting them with the nature of Cooperative Education, and of referring back to the colleges possibilities of cooperation with agencies of the government. The committee appointed consists of: E. K. Hamilin ............... University of Akron Joseph Hilsenrath …...... U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory Donald C. Hunt ………. University of Detroit Il. C. Messinger ………. University of Cincinnati Max B. Robinson …....... Fern College James H. Williamson …. University of Tennessee Dean Robinson agreed to act as Chairman Pro-Tem. Mr. Henry Armsby of the U.S. Bureau of Education is also much interested and will work with us in a liaison capacity. A meeting of the entire committee is being planned for sometime in the early Fall. Mr. Hilsenrath has suggested that our work would be considerably expedited if certain key persons in government departments could receive catalogs or other material descriptive of the cooperative programs of our schools in advance of any meeting of our Committee. He has furnished us with a list of such persons, a copy of which is attached to this letter. You are invited to see that a catalog or other descriptive literature covering your program is mailed to each of the names on this list as soon as convenient. Until a permanent chairman is selected, I will undertake to keep you informed of further developments. Very truly yours,

Max B. Robinson, Chairman Pro-Team Washington Committee, Cooperative Engineering Education Division, American Society for Engineering Education. MBR: dm Enclosure

Education Division American Society for Engineering Education Dear Sir: We want the June meeting here to run smoothly and to that end have named a local man to act as sponsor for each individual conference. For your Division, the local conference sponsor will be Mr. L.H. Matlock. Luncheons and dinners will have separate sponsors, but they will work very closely with this gentleman. The sponsor will probably contact each meeting chairman just before the meeting starts to see that everything needed for this program is actually on hand. Each conference room will have blackboard space available automatically, but blackboards will not be available for luncheons and dinners except by special request. Thus far our records show need for the following special equipment for your meetings: None

Should additional needs develop, please get word to me at the address above, being careful to specify projectors by size, as standard slide, two-by-two inch slides, 16mm film silent or sound, etc.. During the meeting my Committee on Conferences and General Sessions will have a box at the hospitality Desk in the Union Building (Headquarters for the meeting) where you can leave special messages relative to any meeting as late as the night before the meeting. For later information of need, it will be necessary that I or the local sponsor be contacted in person. Please feel free to call on us for anything that will make a better meeting.

Have you used 2X2 slides and a 16mm film projector? What is 16mm you ask?

Very truly yours,
