Dear Parents Dr Deane Yates 1922 – 2012 It is with sadness that we informed our community on the morning before Gaudy Day of the passing of Dr Deane Yates. He was an extraordinary man of vision and service. From 1955 to 1970, he was Headmaster of St John‘s College and subsequently founded the multi-cultural and non-racial Maru-a-Pula. He and Dot lived in a tent while the school was being built – quite a challenge in the dry and dusty Botswana veld! Later he returned to South Africa to found the New Era Trust Schools, which challenged the government by providing a non-racial education for boys and girls. Deane and Dot, his wife, will always be remembered for their loving service to the community in both South Africa and Botswana. He and Dot were worthy recipients of the St John‘s Eagle award for service, which they received in July 2004. Deane was deeply committed to the church and was a lay member of the Community of the Resurrection. He worked tirelessly for the education of the underprivileged and disadvantaged, and on their return to South Africa from Botswana, Deane was particularly involved in the Alexandra Education Committee, which raised funds and selected and mentored children from Alexandra Township and placed them in good schools. Deane was an inspiration to many and his life epitomised the motto of St John‘s College, Lux Vita Caritas. We give thanks to Almighty God for Deane and his wonderful years of service. We celebrate a life well lived, and one that was lived to the honour and glory of our Saviour and Lord – Jesus Christ.

Sir David King This year‘s recipient of an Eagle Award for service is Professor Sir David King who matriculated from Alston House in 1956. Today Sir David is Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and Environment at the University of Oxford. He is currently Chancellor of the University of Liverpool. He was the UK Government‘s Chief Scientific Advisor, and Head of the Government Office of Science from October 2000 to December 2007. In his presentation to the College, Sir David challenged us to shift our paradigm with regard to how we consume energy. He spoke of the need for innovation and the need for future generations to ensure that our footprint on this planet can be different. He forcefully showed that if we continue in our present selfish way, we will destroy what we have. He left us with the challenge and possibility of the young men and women of St John‘s College leading the world in innovation and research to find a different way. He is a wonderful role model - for young men and women - of a man who has lived his life in service to the world.

Rugby at St John’s As we conclude our winter sports programme, we can look back on a season with some wonderful successes and some disappointing defeats. Our final rugby match against St Stithians was an important mark because it indicated a significant improvement in performance from our previous two years. I do believe that the structure that we have put in place over the past two years is beginning to bear fruit. This is with particular reference to rugby, but applicable to all our sport:       

A Head Coach and a Master-in-Charge: Rugby - Mr Stefan Lourens and Mr Morne Heunes Capable school masters involved in coaching at all levels A fitness and strength expert in charge of our gym – Mr Patrick Tshutshani, Biokineticist A programme of skills training in Phys Ed lessons for rugby and hockey A commitment to grow our own talent by building skills, strength and fitness in boys from Pre Prep to College Carefully constructed training programmes appropriate to age A culture of disciplined training, skilled coaching, and a self-belief in our boys that they are able and ready to win

The importance of playing sport at St John‘s College was expressed in my welcome address to St Stithians (printed in our programme) where I outlined the purpose of sport at school: The world of professional sport is geared to entertain. The ‘business’ of sport - where players are bought and sold, coaches are hired and fired, and every team needs a retinue of managers, physiotherapists, conditioners and coaches - belongs firmly in the world of professional sport. At schoolboy level, we play to enjoy the game, and to learn from the lessons of playing in a team, to learn from winning and losing. This learning comes through disciplined, hard training, through the nurturing of talent and developing skills from the prep school up, and through inculcating the right attitudes. Skilled coaching and disciplined training are critical, but the most important matter is that each young man has the opportunity to grow in selfconfidence, courage and determination. Our ‘business’ at school level is that we are preparing young men for adulthood, to be robust and resilient. Schoolboy sport provides the opportunity for this process and growth. The St John‘s Rugby coaches (both Prep and College) will be holding a strategic review on Friday 20 July where we will assess our progress and set goals for the new season. One of the needs identified for developing healthy, fit, and strong boys at St John‘s College is an adequate gym. To meet the immediate need for more space, we will be putting in another prefab building in front of the present gym. This will give an additional 120 sqm of space. Although this is not a long-term solution, it will help for the next few years. This building should be erected by the end of the August holidays. Building Plans and Priorities 2012 - 2015 The Council of St John‘s College has identified the renovation and reconstruction of the Pre Prep as our priority build for the next three years. An exciting plan has been developed by TC Design, the school architects. Initially we were planning to build over a period of three years from 2013 – 2015, moving children from one section to another as the building progressed. Mrs Jane Lane the Headmistress expressed her distress at trying to run a school for such a long period in a building site. Clearly, we need to find alternative accommodation for the 214 children and 15 staff so that the building can be completed in a year. It was also pointed out that the costs of building over three years would add approximately R3 million to the final costs. Hiring temporary classrooms would cost approximately another R1 million. After much discussion, the Building Committee will be recommending to Council that we build temporary accommodation for the Pre Prep on the tennis courts on the east side of Burger Field during 2013. This will enable Endean Field to be extended over the roof of this new building. It will adequately house the Pre Prep with the necessary classrooms and toilet facilities for 2014, when it is proposed to start building the Pre Prep. Once the building of the Pre Prep is complete, we will be able to convert the building into a proper gym. These are exciting developments and we will be able to be proud of our world-class facilities for the Pre Preparatory School.

Conclusion Thank you to all – parents, teachers and boys for your commitment this term. It has been a busy one, full of successes and disappointments. The challenge we face as we educate young boys to be men of integrity and character, is that boys inevitably make mistakes. They have in the past, and will continue to do so in the future. Our task is to shape them and mould them so that they leave St John‘s ‘rightly trained in body, mind and character’. We can only do this with your support and we are grateful for this. Have a wonderful break over half-term and when we return, the boys‘ face their mid-year exams.

Roger Cameron Headmaster

Eagle Award Outreach Program Partnered with the men of the Johannesburg City Parks, dressed in their trademark jade overalls, the St John‘s College boys and girls departed everyday at 06:30 a.m. and travelled a lengthy journey to the heart of Johannesburg – Alexandra. The Eagle Award Outreach Program took place from the 9th April to 13th April at the Realogile High School and Childcare Centre. Many of the pupils were concerned about travelling into the township, however, the students were met with many bubbly personalities and heart-warming smiles, after which, nothing but sheer fun followed. Throughout the week, various activities were organized and the students were split into various groups to perform a variety of tasks in servicing both the High School and the Childcare Centre. These tasks included: painting, gardening, construction of a self-maintained vegetable garden, re-fixing of gutters, teaching the children, feeding babies and (to the enjoyment of many) playing soccer with students of both schools – an integrated and enjoyable learning experience for us all. The project was successful as the objectives of: educating the community about self-sustenance and providing food, were definitely achieved. It was an experience that educated and inspired – one that will not be forgotten by those who served and those who received. Shaneel Kalyan U5 Fleming

Derby Day Debate On Friday the 4th May 2012, St John‘s and St Andrew‘s revived the Derby Day Debate tradition. St Andrew‘s sent up their senior and junior teams—a South African debater being one of the St Andrew‘s team members—to take on St John‘s. The junior teams debated the topic ―Drug addicts should be castrated‖, while the seniors tackled ―Social grants should be granted only to citizens who vote‖. The debates were captivating; the topics aroused strong feeling and some great debating ensued. St John's won both the senior and junior debates by small margins. The boys from both schools conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and seemed to participate and enjoy the opportunity. Overall, I think an official Derby Day Debate would be a great tradition to perpetuate. Next year, I hope we will be able to send a strong team to St Andrew‘s. Jonathan Smith

When last did your son have his eyesight checked? It is said that as many as one in seven young people aged 15 are affected by short-sightedness and one in four teenagers need ‗vision correction. Impaired vision can affect critical academic, sporting and day-to-day activities. Recently, a Remove boy was referred for such a test after reporting ‗blurred‘ or ‗moving‘ text when trying to read. Despite having prescription glasses from Primary school days, this individual had refused to wear them, resulting in significant deterioration in his eyesight. Easily rectified with a more recent prescription, he is now reading significantly better and with added concentration, as evidenced by increasingly improved academic results. In another case, an Upper Four boy was given a clean bill of optical health in Remove. Referred back to an ophthalmologist recently, significant short-sightedness was identified. He reports that his prescription glasses have made a significant difference to his focus in the classroom and to his studying in general.

Annual eye checks are strongly recommended for teenagers – either to check on existing prescriptions, or to ensure that healthy vision has not changed. What to Expect: Each eye care practitioner has their own routine, but most comprehensive eye exams follow a similar pattern, conducting tests for: 

Vision - The eye care practitioner will check for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. While you look at an eye chart, he/she will measure your vision precisely, and, if necessary, determine a prescription for corrective lenses.

Coordination of eye muscles - The practitioner will move a light in a set pattern to test your ability to see sharply and clearly at near and far distances, and to use both eyes together.

Side (peripheral) vision - The practitioner will move an object at the edge of your field of vision to make sure you can see it.

Pupil response to light - The practitioner will shine a light in your eye and watch the pupil's reaction.

Colour testing - The practitioner will ask you to describe figures in a series of illustrations made up of numerous coloured dots or circles. This tests your ability to differentiate colours.

Eyelid health and function - The practitioner will examine your eyelid, inside and out.

The interior and back of the eye - After dilating your eyes (by both using a few eye drops and dimming the lights so the pupils will widen), the practitioner will use a special instrument called an ophthalmoscope to see through to the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye. This is where clues to many eye diseases first show up.

Measurement of fluid pressure - The practitioner will release a puff of air onto your eyeball using an instrument called a tonometer. This tests the pressure inside the eyeball, an early indicator of glaucoma and other diseases.
