FROM OUR RABBI Our Struggle for Survival, Freedom and Unity

With conflicts and crises simmering around the globe, it is hard not to stay glued to the news; the news of school shootings in our communities, perennial unrest in the Middle East, and growing anti-Semitism here and in many countries throughout the world. All this serves to bring into sharper focus our responsibility as Jews and as Americans to work for a better world, and to come to the aid of our neighbors wherever they are in peril.

Now there is certainly nothing wrong with Jews disagreeing with one another over ideology or halacha, or anything else. Every page of the Talmud records such disputes, and it is in the very nature of Judaism to encourage such debate.

As we enter the celebration of Passover, two timeless truths emerge. First of all, the struggle for freedom is one that has been fought continuously throughout human history. We cannot hide from the troubles of the world and hope that they will simply go away. We must remain vigilant and engaged to confront the evils that sometimes threaten our world.

I’m very proud and strengthened by the fact that we don’t witness that kind of friction and discord at our shul. Internal strife and shul politics is practically a cliché, yet it is one that simply does not define who we are at Beth Shalom! We truly are a caring and cohesive community with a wonderful “family feel” and a special bond that has always been instrumental to our success as a congregation.

Secondly, the Jewish people have often been targeted as scapegoats throughout our history. And so, the words of our Passover Haggadah continue to ring true, namely, “b’chol dor vador omdim alenu l’chalotenu” “In every generation some tyrant has arisen to try and destroy us”. But as the Haggadah continues, “The Holy One has always rescued us from their hands”. So while our survival has often been threatened, somehow the Jewish people have always managed to endure. And our perseverance, despite all the evils that have been thrust upon us, has always been seen as evidence of how God’s love for the Jewish people has helped keep us around until this day. Sometimes however, the dangers we face stem from fractures within our very own community. The Talmud teaches us that it is only because of such divisiveness that the Second Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, as that period saw powerful rifts between the Pharisees and Saducees. In Biblical times, Israel was divided into two kingdoms following the death of King Solomon. In the nineteenth century there was great animosity between the Hassidim and the Mitnagdim (those who opposed Hasidism). And when one reads Israeli newspapers today, it is clear that we Americans have nothing on Israel when it comes to internal dissension or robust political rancor. So as Jews we must be mindful of the fact that sometimes our internal struggles can be as dangerous to our survival as our external threats. As the old joke goes: Two Jews, three opinions (if not three synagogues)! Instead of trying to build ourselves up, sometimes we are too busy tearing each other down.

Nevertheless, if we endlessly squabble with one another, it can only lead us down a dangerous path and weaken our collective strength.

Despite sometimes vigorous debates throughout the larger Jewish community, we have always found a source of strength from our shared history, and from the Torah itself. And as long as we retain our mutual respect for one another and understand that kol Yisrael arevim zeh lazeh, that all Jews are responsible one for another, then we will continue to persevere and thrive as a people. And I would be remiss if I did not also mention how synagogues have always been the central force in our community that bound the Jewish people together, and helped us to maintain our identity and spirit. By supporting our shul, you are also performing a vital role in helping to keep the Jewish people alive and vibrant. May that spirit of unity, shared values and sacred mission continue to define us as a people mi’dor l’dor for many generations to come. Linda and I join in wishing you all a Hag Kasher V’Sameyach; a joyous, kosher and meaningful Passover holiday.

Rabbi Mark Zimmerman

FROM OUR PRESIDENT Shalom Congregation Beth Shalom! As it is that time of year again, where we begin to welcome spring into the air; we do a bit of house cleaning; we change out to use the ‘other’ set of dishes; we become a bit more kosher in our eating habits; we gather for a nice discussion/story and meal with family and friends and we even attend a few services in shul…so no, I am not talking about your son or daughter’s B’Nai Mitzvah weekend! Of course, I am referring to Passover. Yes, Pesach brings a sense of new; a sense of freshness to our lives each year. Although we might sit back and kvetch a little around how much work it is and how many ‘rules’ there are to keep Passover, in the end you really love it. You love how the extra work connects you to your Judaism and how the tradition of the holiday connects you to the wonderful family memories you have of your Seders throughout the years. And just so I put it out there…if you don’t feel these connections, you should! Our religion is built on so many traditions. Many of them we simply do because our parents, our grandparents or their parents did it that way. We are not always sure why we do it, but it feels right, and we can’t think of another way to do it. The other neat part about traditions is that they can start new at any time. It just takes a little momentum and they are off and running. With eight (8) days of Passover and a lot of rituals, prayers, services and events, my challenge for you is what tradition will you start this Pesach in your family? Now is the time spend a few extra minutes on a discussion topic at your Seder table; invite a new person or family each year to celebrate with you; come to services during the holiday; pick up the last bit of chametz with a candle, spoon and feather and then ‘sell’ it at the shul or maybe just make a new, yummy kosher for Passover dessert or dish. Don’t delay, think of your new Pesach tradition today!

If you are like me and you read through the bulletins, peruse the various emails each week and click around our web page, you will see how active, fun, inspirational and rewarding being a member of Beth Shalom can be. Your staff with the guidance of the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees works hard each day to provide the spiritual support, enriching activities and financial stability to make Beth Shalom great for all of us. Just know that your Board is working diligently to have the right vision and strategy to have our kehillah positioned for excellence in the years to come. So, as you think about what the synagogue offers for you…have you ever thought about what you could do for it? What new ‘tradition’ could you start doing at shul every week, every month? Would you like to serve on a committee; help chair an event; be a representative on the Board or even attend an event or service that you would normally not? If any of these items interest or inspire you, act on them! Additionally, if you just want to share a comment or suggestion, please feel free to reach out to me and let me hear from you at [email protected]. Here is an easy tradition for each of you. Download the Beth Shalom Shul Cloud app on your smartphone and make a point to look at it a few times each week. It will keep you and your family connected to the shul. If you can’t find the email we recently sent you to connect and join, just contact the office, and we will direct you there. On behalf of Amanda, Gregory, Marissa & myself, we wish you a “Happy Pesach” (that’s the traditional greeting in our family, so it must be OK )! Be well and see you in shul!

Beth Shalom Patio dedication March 10th at 12:45pm The new Beth Shalom patio has been built in memory and in honor of Bea and Sam Axler and Minna and Morris Short, parents of Joel Axler and Louise Short, and grandparents of Ariella (Joe) Shayani, Elana Axler, and Eden Axler. All four parents had a love of Judaism that they passed down L' Dor V Dor, and their families were the center of their lives. We hope that the patio will be a place of gathering and worship that will strengthen our communities' bonds to Judaism and to each other. Please join us on March 10th at 12:45 pm immediately following Kiddush lunch when we will be dedicating the patio in their honor and memory.

FROM OUR VP OF DEVELOPMENT Oh, What a Night! The Dinner of Honor will be a fantastic evening celebrating the contributions of Joel Axler and Jeff Budd. Thank you for all the hard work of Fred Rich and his committee, Robyn Anshell, Donald Baranovitz, Issy Cheskes, Steve Kaufman, Lucy Moses, Larry Rosenfield, Alex Shulman and Wendy Widis. Delicious food, great entertainment, family and friends will make it an evening we’ll all remember fondly. The Beth Shalom Photo Tribute Directory will be distributed at the Dinner of Honor. If you couldn’t attend the dinner, you may pick up a Directory from the synagogue office. Helene Urbaitel and Loli Gross went above and beyond, soliciting ads, designing the layout and coordinating the logistics involved with its production. Thank you for your dedication! The Directory raised over $20,000 for the shul, Thanks to all who placed ads and honors to make this a successful fundraiser. Speaking of fundraising, please help us finish our fiscal year and reach our development goal by giving one last time to the Matz-Appeal. This campaign ensures that we end our year covering all the budgeted expenses that keep our shul running, from utilities to building maintenance, repairs, updates, supplies, food for Kiddush lunches, shul programming, our exceptional staff, and everything Beth Shalom needs to provide for our thriving community. B’Shalom,

FROM OUR CO-VPS OF RITUAL In our ritual calendar, the festival of Spring is Pesach. There is perhaps no time of the year filled with more tradition and ritual regulations than Passover. From the order of the aptly named seder, to the procedures of ridding our homes of chametz, to the special dietary laws (and the controversy of kitniot), one can certainly get lost in all the special things that take place during this one week. The primary mitzvah of Passover, however, is to tell your son on that day what Hashem did for you when you went out of Egypt. (Exodus 13:8). With the spirit of this mitzvah in mind, Passover is an ideal time to connect with your Jewish identity and discuss with your children what being Jewish means to you – What Hashem has done for you since coming out of Egypt. Passover does not have to be intimidating. This year, make it a time for reconnection to the people of Israel, and a good excuse for a serious Spring cleaning. L’hitraot.

FROM THE SISTERHOOD

Sisterhood and Women’s Voices

First, kol ha kavod to Eileen Cohn and her Torah Fund team of Randi Strumlauf, Clara Safra, Robyn Anshell, Linda Zimmerman, Marsha Fish, Rene Montaigne, Janet Lane,Lisa Sturt, Ayalah Brenowitz, Jan Kasow, Jan Adler, Bonnie Draluck, Carolann Reiter, Sherron Lazarus and Cheryl Garfinkel for organizing a fun evening of wine tasting and music to benefit Women’s League Torah Fund scholarships in Conservative seminaries, schools and camps worldwide. Everyone learned a little about wine and Torah Fund too. And now we move on to Passover...Thirty years ago, my mother posed a question to my sister and me. ‘”We live apart from one another now, so pick just one holiday we will all commit to celebrating together. Which holiday do you choose?” Passover became that holiday, and mostly, with a couple of outlier years, we have all joined together either in Atlanta, Massachusetts or Rhode Island. There was one year of seaside seders in South Carolina too. We have lots of memories connected to these annual events: loved ones who were with us and now gone, snowstorm seders, seders with bouncy young kids, and then seders with testy teenagers. We had seders with additional family and friends, and seders with invited college girls. And we have the annual and mysterious tradition of the missing Passover purse, and the silly singing of certain songs. Now greatgrandchildren have been added to the mix. So, when you think about it, the creation of these memory making events involved mostly the women. The men may have been the “night of” conductors, but the groundwork belonged to the women. The cleaning, the shopping, the preparing fell confidently into female hands. Our Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood recognizes the contributions of women during the Exodus and also in the contemporary world of 2018. So, even though women are nearly erased from the traditional Haggadah, it is generally through women’s work that a seder occurs, binding family and friends together. Keeping this in mind, please join Sisterhood’s annual and popular night of Passover cooking and baking with our own chef, Jan Adler, on Tuesday March 6th at 7 PM. Everyone will get to taste and cook as well. Bring a recipe or two of your own to share with the group. This evening of Passover prep is always a pleaser! After Passover, be on the lookout for a wonderful, educational, and creative “arty party” night on April 18th with our artist in residence, Mordechai Rosenstein. Everyone will have the opportunity to paint and to purchase some beautiful Judaic art. There are many possibilities for involvement in CBS Sisterhood: Chai Mitzvah, Book Club, Mah Jongg, Kiddush preparation, and the educational programs. Get involved as we move into the spring. Finally, check out the website for Women’s League for Conservative Judaism for new and different readings for your Passover seder. Many of them focus on the contributions of women during the Exodus. Even though women remain nearly absent from the customary Haggadah, they should show up at your Sedar table!. Wishing each of you a memory making, enlightened, and meaningful Passover with family and friends.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE JOIN US APRIL 18TH THROUGH APRIL 22ND WE ARE HONORED TO HAVE MORDECHAI ROSENSTEIN SHARE HIS TALENT, EXPERIENCES AND LIFE’S JOURNEY WITH US AT BETH SHALOM. The Hebrew alphabet is the essence of the art of Mordechai Rosenstein. Rosenstein says “The flowing forms of the letters have been an inspiration to me since my youth”. His love of these forms is evident in every piece he creates. His vibrant shapes and colors enhance synagogue interiors, tapestries, paintings, murals and silkscreen prints. Rosenstein’s unique style combines his interest in Judaica and painting, giving a contemporary meaning to the art of Hebrew calligraphy. Rosenstein feels that it is very stimulating and rewarding to interact with members and communities throughout the country. He has traveled throughout the United States and abroad. Audiences in Zurich, Hong Kong, and London have welcomed Rosenstein, viewing his paintings and learning from the slide lecture he presents. He has become one of the leading designers in the stained glass field.

Please rsvp to the CBS Office by March 22 No charge for this movie!

A MUST SEE!!!!! Woman in Gold is the remarkable true story of one woman’s journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazi’s, among them Gustav Klimt’s famous painting Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Together with her inexperienced young lawyer, she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the US Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way. Mirren and Reynolds are sensational!

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF LIFE LONG LEARNING The Office of Lifelong Learning is always full of activity. Over the last couple of months we were busy with a Havdalah program, Shabbat school days, Disability Awareness Month programming, service projects, the World Wide Wrap, Friday night programming and more. And as this bulletin goes to print we are elbows deep in helping with our fabulous Purim Carnival, followed by our annual Erev Purim extravaganza. And that was just the past few weeks. The next Shabbat School day will be Saturday, March 3rd, which is also Youth Shabbat. Our sixth and seventh graders will sit in and participate in the regular services, while the younger students will attend class and come into the main sanctuary to lead specific parts of the service. Then on March 9 th our third grade students will lead parts of the Friday night service and will receive their own siddur that was beautifully decorated by their parents. This is a very special night for all in attendance. Our third through sixth grade students are learning about hunger in our community as they help pack sacks of food for the Backpack Buddies program hosted by Beth Shalom. Our third graders packed a couple of weeks ago and our fourth and fifth grade students will pack on March 11th. The sixth graders will pack in April. This year Passover coincides with public school spring break, which allows us to limit the number of days off in April. It also gives us the opportunity to celebrate Pesach in school with a model seder on Sunday, March 25 th. If you would like to help out or just attend please let me know. All our welcome. Keep an eye on the school calendar, which you can find on the synagogue website to see all of the programming coming up in April and May. We hope to see you around the building at one or more of the many learning opportunities offered in our kehillah. B’Shalom,

Linda Zimmerman

FROMOUR OURDIRECTOR DIRECTOROF OFEARLY FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING CHILDHOOD EDUCATION We wanted to celebrate the special men in our lives this month so we did! We had a wonderful morning where we got to spend time interacting 1:1 with our dads and granddads at the preschool. Sharing time together, learning through play and strengthening our connection to our families were our goals and we succeeded! Look below at these awesome photos of the fun and joy our yeladim had with the special men in their lives… . March and April will be busy months for us! Two holidays that involve stories of our ancestors that children can grasp are celebrated this month: Purim and Passover. Both holidays have much in common that we are exploring heroes, stories printed in book form (megillah and haggadah) that involve freedom, leadership and kings. Not to mention strong female role models, festive meals, special foods and the number four! We had a special Purim VIP celebration – this was an event filled with special guests, megillah readings, & song performances with a special additional fundraising and movement program called The Shushan Shuffle! Passover will involve matzah making with Eileen Cohn, storytelling, songs, wandering through the desert, parting the sea activities, tastings and lots of questioning! We are required to retell the story as if we were there and we plan too! We look forward to our in class seders as well. Camp Alefbet registration is here! New weekly themes, new fun and flexible hours/days/weeks available. Starting June 4th – for ages one years old to 4 years. Explore our weekly themes in a hands-on, sensory, creative way – our educators are our ‘head’ counselors too. Fall Registration for the 2018-19 Alefbet Preschool year is open! Register your infant – Pre-K child at the Alefbet Preschool! We are the preschool that fosters a strong foundation for social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and physical growth. We are the preschool that models and builds Kavod (respect), Chesed (kindness), Tzedakah (justice, charity) and Ahava (love) all in a warm, challenging, inclusive and creative Jewish environment. We have so much more information about The Alefbet Preschool on our website alefbetpreschool.com. This is a little insight into our month’s activities. We love sharing our preschool – come learn more about us. Contact Risa Walter, Director of Early Childhood Education 770.399.7622/[email protected], B’Shalom,

FROM OUR YOUTH DIRECTOR Once again the Youth Department is busy planning for conventions, events and fundraisers. March and April marks convention season and our USYers and 8th graders have the opportunity to go on some amazing weekend conventions. Before all of that, all 3-12 graders are invited to KUSY’s 2nd annual Chocolate Seder on Sunday, April 8 from 12:30pm-2:00pm! Come celebrate the end of Passover with the youth department with a chocolaty twist. We hope to see as many people as possible for what will be a fun and yummy event. Now, on to our conventions! For our 8th graders, Gesher Convention on March 16-18 is the “bridge” between Kadima and USY. This year’s convention is in Tampa, Florida, at the Tampa Airport Marriott. This is a great convention for our oldest Kadimaniks to get a feel for what it will be like to be in USY. The deadline to apply is March 1st Our USYers have two conventions to attend in the spring. In March, Ein Gedi is going to Nashville, TN for Spring Sub-Regional Convention on March 9-11. Travel is being organized by the Atlanta Chapters and will be finalized in the next couple of weeks. This is a great convention for our USYers to see their friends in our Sub-Region. Last year, KUSY took home the Slinky Award which is given to the chapter that is the most involved, and has shown the most growth. We are looking forward to defending Slinky this year in the home of Country Music! Deadline is February 28. Finally, this April 20-22 is HaNegev Regional Convention at the Rosen Center in Orlando, FL. The final convention for the year is the time where our USYers not only see their friends in the Sub-Region, but also can meet other kids across the southeast. Be on the lookout for the registration deadline and flyers. All members that are signed up for the Youth department are eligible to attend these conventions. Please check with Ryan about travel arrangements and pricing. All of these conventions can be signed up for on the USY registration website. As always, be on the lookout for more Beth Shalom events as the spring semester begins to wind down! B’Shalom,

Ryan Tourial

April 8, 2018 12:30pm to 2:00pm You are cordially invited to the 2nd Annual KUSY Chocolate Seder. Join us for this sweet and chocolaty event. Come celebrate Passover with the only way KUSY knows how. With lots of fun! RSVP to [email protected]
