Our year-round programme includes exhibitions, film, music, literature, spoken word, festivals, Gaelic and performance. We have an open-source approach to programming and work with a growing number of partners and individuals to whom we offer space to programme their own events. At the heart of all our activities is the desire to work with artists, generate new projects and present them to the widest possible audience. CCA also produces a range of artist residencies, both in the venue and internationally. CCA ticketinG: Please note that tickets sold through CCA’s box office incur a booking fee of £1. This is not-for-profit; the booking fee covers the cost of our ticketing software. The full income from all tickets is passed on to event organisers. Booking fees do not apply to freebut-ticketed events.
We go into our winter season with a programme that is impossible to describe in a mere brochure introduction. The best I can do is point you towards the many pages that follow and ask you to read it all carefully. It will be worth it. A new exhibition on the voice – Lilt, Twang, Tremor – with artists Sarah Rose, Susannah Stark and Hanna Tuulikki opens in the main galleries while in Intermedia there are two new exhibitions: Rebecca Howard in a solo show, and Anna Danielewicz and Tomás Palmer working together on Autocue. In the Creative Lab there are two hosted residencies – one from AC Projects with the collective Osmosis in a series of collaborative experiments and the other a series of residents selected by Dance House. More mysteriously, a third residency by Michael Blum will explore the many dimensions, some psychic, of CCA history. In Montreal, Michael White will be in residence at Centre Clark as part of this year’s CALQ exchange.

Several of the festivals in this season are among the most popular at CCA. Sonica returns with a new Heather Lander installation and a host of other guests. The Havana Glasgow Film Festival keeps on growing and this year’s programme is the most expansive yet. Radiophrenia is also back, performing their now annual heroic feat in which sound art and specially-commissioned live-to-air performances are broadcast twenty-four hours a day from 6 – 19 November.

There is also a very intriguing music programme this season with Ceol ’s Craic in their first ever collaboration with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (who also have GIOfest at the start of December). For many reasons, I’m obviously pleased that The Vaselines are performing here too and finally, that both Destroyer and the great Douglas Dunn will be here this season.

For this exhibition, CCA invites three Scottish artists whose work examines the politics and production of voice. The human voice can mystify, calm, incite, deceive and betray. It can shift borders, change spaces and disturb our understanding of ourselves and our communities. Looking at how the voice takes shape in different places and environments, this exhibition explores the contexts in which voices are made audible. Examining the mouth, the mouthless voice, the embodied and disembodied voice, the voice as a tool, and as an instrument – the artists question the manner in which vocals affect the environment around us. Sarah Rose’s practice results from an interest in how the voice constructs prejudices and bias, investigating the vocal transmission of information, such as rumour, translation and inflection. Responding to the limitations of printed text, she explores how the unwritten voice might reject a gendering of narrative. Her sculptural installations examine how objects hold sound and tell stories in space, and how information is shaped through its oral communication. Through an in-depth research in to specific materials, climates and histories, her work in this show aims to locate the political within sound, volume and material. Susannah Stark focuses on the power and placement of the voice, questioning how language is used in a technology-driven, digital and capitalist culture. She has an interest in the mouth as modulator which shapes and organises culture, both as a bodily organ and a machine. With many works questioning how voice functions within the context of urban space, she investigates the translation of voice into material and cultural experience. Collaborating with musician Donald Hayden – and inspired by writings on the ancient Greek cynics – she merges the economic, cultural, spiritual and personal into a rotating narration of the contradictions of contemporary living, using digital media, sound, and song. Hanna Tuulikki’s work as a composer, artist and performer considers the voice as a meeting point between self and the world. She investigates the ways in which the body communicates beyond and before words, telling stories through imitation, vocalisation and gesture. Often exploring music and movement traditions across cultures, she is particularly interested in how bodily relationships and folk histories relate within specific environments and places. With a strong connection to landscape, nature and ritual, her works explore an ecology of the world through textured tapestries of performances, audio visual installations and visual score drawings. CCA: Public Engagement After two intense years of programming, our Public Engagement department is pausing for a moment. In this time, we will be re-assessing our work, undertaking some research and devoting more attention to some less public-facing activities with the community groups we have been engaging across Glasgow. Intentions in Action has now come to an end, and has been converted into an informal learning programme called the School for Civic Imagination. Public events from the School for Civic Imagination will run until June 2018. Cooking Pot and Invisible Knowledge will continue as usual. If you would like to get involved and propose your own Cooking Pot event, please email
[email protected]. We are also planning a future chapter of Botanic Concrete – our 2016 community programme reimagining Garnethill – which will take place in Drumchapel in collaboration with Green Drumchapel Network.

Gallery 4, GoMA, Royal Exchange Square Thu 23 Nov, 6pm, Free but ticketed / 12+ Invisible Knowledge hosts an artist talk with Tam Joseph, exploring themes of sociopolitical commentary, symbolism around water, and current directions in his practice. The event takes its title from a large-scale painted work of the artist’s which entered the collection of Glasgow Museums in 1992. This work will act as a point-of-departure for an overview of Joseph’s practice since the late 1960s. 9

Sonica
HAVANA GLASGOW FILM Festival
Sonica, Cryptic’s biennial festival of world-class visual sonic arts, returns to Glasgow for eleven days this autumn.
The Havana Glasgow Film Festival brings the Cuban spirit to Glasgow in an international celebration of film and culture, deepening our special relationship between these great twinned cities.

Highlights at CCA include Heather Lander’s mesmerising audiovisual installation Nearer Future, and Manuel Rocha Iturbide’s Zzzzzzzzz with a record player spontaneously making noises that sound suspiciously like… snoring? In Singularity, an audiovisual collaboration between Solveig Settemsdal and Kathy Hinde, we see an isolated point of white light take on complex forms accompanied by evolving, clustered layers of sound, or take a VR journey to the land of indigenous elder Nyarri Morgan and experience a dramatic clash between the traditional and Western worlds in Lynette Wallworth’s Collisions. 10

HGFF returns with a programme of top Cuban films, Q&As, networking events and a special pre-festival event on 5 November. We are privileged to be welcoming one of Cuba’s top actors Luis Alberto Garcia to present two of his films at CCA: Clandestino, hailed by critics worldwide, and Habanastation, one of the most popular Cuban films from the last few years. We’re also increasing our very popular school screenings to three events, featuring Habanastation and Cuba’s latest success Esteban.

We celebrate a decade of GIOfest with guests from Europe, the US and Australia. Featured this year will be some of the key pieces composed and commissioned for GIO over the past ten years including commissions from George Lewis and Jim O’Rourke, with film and dance collaborations, workshops and discussions. Special guests include Peter Knight, director of The Australia Art Orchestra, Tender Buttons Trio from the US featuring Gino Robair, and the legendary Rhodri Davies. The multi-instrumentalist/composer Aby Vulliamy will lead our workshop sessions and we welcome back the amazing vibraphonist Corey Mwamba and one of our most influential collaborators, the inspirational Maggie Nicols, all in celebration of ten years of a growing international GIOfest community. 12

CULTURAL TENANTS CCA is a multi-purpose venue and we aim to make the best use of every space in the building. Following the renovation in 2001, when CCA acquired the two-storey Mandors fabric store on Scott Street, several office spaces were created on the first and second floors to house what would become known as our Cultural Tenants. CCA’s Cultural Tenants are artistic and cultural organisations who contribute to the venue’s events programme in return for discounted office space. There are fourteen tenants based in the building and each has an individually tailored arrangement with CCA. Rents are below commercial rates and tenants have a two-year contract that includes a clause defining their contribution to CCA’s programme. Tenants engage with the building and its audiences, while enhancing the CCA events programme and providing a publicly-beneficial alternative to a commercial rental cost. On a more human level, this agreement also keeps us in contact with each other, giving us reasons to meet and to consider the use of the building. Current Cultural Tenants in the building are: BHP Comics: Scotland’s leading independent comic book publisher promotes new and exciting creator-owned collaborative comic books and graphic novels. They produce Glasgow’s successful Comic Con, which found a home at CCA in 2013. Camcorder Guerillas: a voluntary collective of independent, radical filmmakers, activists and artists who create and showcase films that raise awareness of social justice issues facing our local communities. Cryptic: an internationally-renowned producing art house who create high quality, memorable, innovative experiences that fuse music, sonic art and multi-media elements. Cryptic also produce the biannual Sonica festival of visual sonic arts. Document: Scotland’s international human rights documentary film festival is a grassroots initiative that aims to use film, art and music as advocacy tools to raise the profile and promote debate of human rights and social issues across the globe. Electron Club: an autonomous space where anyone interested in open source software, circuit bending, hardware hacking, computer recycling, streaming, editing, green technologies and amateur radio can use equipment and share ideas. LUX Scotland: a dedicated support agency for artists working with moving image. Activities include a distribution collection of artists’ moving image work produced in Scotland and a professional support programme for Scotland-based artists. MAP: previously a quarterly magazine, MAP now offers an expanded site for contemporary art, publicly re-examining and developing the processes of active reading and looking. Paragon: a music company that works throughout Scotland generating learning opportunities for young people and people with learning disabilities. Paragon work with a variety of community groups to create and perform music. 26

Playwrights’ Studio Scotland: a dedicated development organisation for playwrights. Playwrights’ Studio Scotland have a second space at CCA, the Tom McGrath Writers’ room, named after the founder of PSS and the Third Eye Centre. Scottish Ensemble: a group of twelve outstanding musicians who champion music written for strings, crossing genres, styles, periods, and art forms to make new connections and reach as many different people as possible. Scottish Writers’ Centre: an organisation that aims to support and promote the work of Scottish writers and provide an international showcase space for Scottish literature. The List: the company publicises the wide range of arts, events and entertainment taking place throughout the year in Scotland through a magazine, website and publications for the Edinburgh festivals. University of the West of Scotland: the university has a wide range of academic, social and sporting facilities. Voice Business: a training organisation focused on public speaking, presentation and communication skills. Cultural Tenants’ involvement in the CCA programme includes MAP, Camcorder Guerillas and LUX Scotland screenings; BHP Comics’ workshops and annual Comic Con; regular monthly writing events from Scottish Writers’ Centre and Playwrights’ Studio Scotland; Paragon’s weekly music workshop Beat It; Document’s annual film festival; UWS’ annual showcases of student work; Scottish Ensemble’s performances in Saramago and Cryptic’s regular performance nights and festivals. Outside of the main venue programme, the Electron Club hosts its own groups and meetings in the first floor space that, until 2006, was the office of the CCA director. For CCA, it is of great value to have so many other cultural organisations in the building. It helps to fulfil our aim to be a hub for the arts, while also extending the support we can provide through the open source programming approach to supporting arts organisations with office space.
