FirefighterCharlotte The mission of the Charlotte Fire Department is to minimize the risk of fire and other hazards to the citizens of Charlotte. To accomplish this mission, the Department provides response to and mitigation of fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, aircraft emergencies, high angle and confined space rescues, and other emergencies as they arise. These services are provided immediately to any person who has a need anywhere within the corporate limits of the City of Charlotte. The Charlotte Fire Department is separated into 6 Battalions. There are 35 fire stations located in the city that house a number of different apparatus. The Charlotte Fire Department has been designated as one of the leading fire departments in the county. To qualify for the position of firefighter, applicants must submit an application, pass a written test, oral interview, physical agility test, polygraph, background investigation and drug screening. Applicants must also obtain Civil Service Certification. In addition to fire suppression, the Fire Department also provides first responder EMT-Defibrillator services, confined space rescue, child safety seat inspection, hazardous materials handling, and trench and high angle rescue.
