We Pull Together…………... This is the second time in recent months that burglaries and thefts in the village have dominated local concerns. However this time the articles inside are providing information on what we can do to help prevent more happening in the future. The main focus is not surprising, if we support each other and watch out for people and property there is much we can do to prevent further incidents. CCTV has also been suggested recently. Many people do not like the idea of ‘big brother’ watching our movements, but it has proved invaluable in tracking down criminals in many instances and, of course, provides a strong deterrent to many more. We do not live in a high crime area, (thankfully!) but as recent events have shown our local villages are vulnerable to so called ‘soft targets’. Do you have any opinions on these matters? Would you like to see some CCTV cameras installed? Would you be willing to join in a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme? See pages 2 and 4 for more

information.

It’s the end of the cricketing season for another year. It has been great to read the monthly accounts of the ups and downs of North Kilworth Cricket Team – with many thanks to Simon for the regular write ups and the photos, as well as all the people who work together to make it all happen. We look forward to the 2018 season!

And if you are going away at half-term, don’t forget those security tips.

It may seem that the school term has only just begun, but this month sees the first half-term and the end of British Summer Time. Is there a still a movement to keep BST rather than change back to Greenwich Mean Time? I think there used to be and certainly there is still an argument that many would prefer more light at the end of the day rather than the beginning. Or does it not matter whether you go to work in the dark or come home in the dark? I know that some of you will be doing both for many months in the winter…Let us

Letters to the Editor

Crime in North Kilworth Many readers will be aware that there have been a number of burglaries and other incidents in North and South Kilworth recently. The Parish Council met last Thursday where this issue was discussed with members of the public at some length. Councillors also attended the S Kilworth Parish Council meeting last week to hear directly from local police and discuss their plans. PC Andy Cooper is the local Beat Officer in Lutterworth (you can reach him by dialling 101 and his contact is 1261). He has sent some notes on household crime safety which are included in this Newsletter. He is also arranging for a local Police Community Support Officer to visit the village at a date to be agreed, this will be publicised. The Parish Council has decided to reinstate the North Kilworth Neighbourhood watch scheme, you can join this on line through the Neighbourhood Watch web site by entering your postcode. There will be a number of street level co-ordinators in the village who can pass on messages and information and get in touch directly with people who are not ‘on line’. They will co-ordinate the supply of house Neighbourhood Watch stickers and other deterrents and information. The Council also agreed to establish a whatsapp contact group and this will be set up shortly and enable messages to be sent quickly between residents and to the local Police. When Neighbourhood Watch is properly established it will have its own committee and communication systems, until then it will remain a priority item on the Parish Council meeting agenda and anyone with problems or questions can attend a meeting or approach a Parish Councillor.

The clear message from the Police is that we as a community need to make North Kilworth unattractive to potential criminals. Messaging is a good way of keeping alert and informed but we are not all ‘on line’ and not always at home and there is no substitute for talking to each other and watching out for each other and for any suspicious strangers - ‘ask them who they are and what they are doing here?’. We all need to be alert and careful and take the kind of sensible precautions in Andy Cooper’s list. We hope to have a number of door stickers (Neighbourhood Watch and No Cold Callers) for distribution very soon and will be looking at Neighbourhood Watch lamp post plates also. I hope we will have a list of local co-ordinators for the next Newsletter if you want to volunteer for this or any other role or have any ideas or comments please get in touch. Sue Otter

Summary of Parish Council Meeting 14th September 2017 1.Items held over from the meeting held on 13th July 2017 Cranmer Lane Track – The Parish Council intend to contact LCC and formally request that the track ceases to be a highway and is adopted into the nature reserve with rights of access to be maintained. Station Road Proposed Allotment Site – The Parish Council are still trying to arrange a meeting on site with Swan Homes. It was proposed that a decision regarding the future use of the land will be determined by the Parish Council meeting in January 2018. Letter from Sue Wemyss at St Andrew’s School – The school have asked if they can use the small spinney at the Stoney to run forest school sessions for small groups during the school day. Keeping Your Home Secure Some useful information from PC Andy Cooper (local Beat Officer in Lutterworth) Homes with no security measures in place are five times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures. Good window locks and strong deadlocks can make a big difference. Taking just a few steps can make a big difference in keeping your home safe from burglary. Here are a few tips:

               

Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you're just out in the garden, remembering to double-lock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn key) Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox) Install a visual burglar alarm Install good outside lighting Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition Secure bikes at home by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked shed or garage Keep ladders and tools stored away; don't leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property Ensure rear fencing is in good repair Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trim high hedges Mark your property with postcode and house number and register your property for free with Immobilise. (The UK National Property Register. Register your valuables to help reduce property crime and improve your chances of getting items back in the event of loss or theft). Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch scheme Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows Store any high value items (i.e. jewellery, passports) in a properly secured safe or bank vault

Hope to Hope 2017 - Sponsored Cycle Challenge Following on from previous successful charity cycle rides, Hope Against Cancer cyclists once again took to the roads dressed up in their custom Lycra suits. A number of training rides, in preparation for this challenge, had taken place over the previous months and the team was split into five groups according to their experience and ability. They were to cycle over 300 miles in 4 days, taking in the notorious climbs and descents of the Derbyshire Peaks, and everything else that Britain’s roads, cycle paths and weather could throw at them. Meeting at The Cradock Arms early morning on Saturday 16th September, a group of 50 cyclists together with their 5 support cyclists made their way down to St Martins House closely followed by 7 support crew, bike mechanic and a masseur. They were met by family and friends and given a spirited address and send off by City Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby. Then, Leicester Tigers stars, George Catchpole and George Worth, held the official starting ribbon for Hope Supporter Jo Larsen to cut and the cyclists were on their way led out of the city by a taxi escort. Day 1 - Leicester to Buxton Melbourne Hall provided the setting for the first coffee/cake stop alongside a classic car show and village art trail. Then it was off via Ashbourne and the never-ending I’m told, Tissington Trail. An overnight stay at The Palace Hotel provided our first night’s post-ride entertainment. Day 2 - Buxton to Stockport After stopping for lunch in the aptly named town of Hope, where the obvious photo opportunities presented themselves, the cyclists had to climb the infamous Mam Tor with an average gradient of 10%, and then up Eccles Pyke, and on to Stockport for another overnight stay. Day 3 – Stockport to Sheffield We were all glad to leave a busy Stockport behind us and on to more wonderful scenery alongside the reservoirs of Torside and Woodhead. After a ‘gentle’ climb to Holme Moss Summit (1,719ft), lunch was served at Holmfirth, immortalised by its association with ‘The Last of The Summer Wine’ tv series. Day 4 – Sheffield to Leicester An early start was planned as the first group set off just after 7.00am with100 miles of cycling in front of them! This was a challenge in itself as tiredness and weary limbs were being asked once more to perform. The weather was kind all day and after another wonderful lunch in Long Bennington, spirits were high as visions of getting home and assembling back at St Martins House was within reach. All the cyclists then set off together for the final journey back up Welford Road and the welcome party at The Cradock Arms, where supper and liquid refreshments were eagerly awaited and indeed consumed. Stories were being retold and the memories of the past four days, with new friends made, were being freely swapped. This amazing journey and sense of achievement was completed by a remarkable group of cyclists of all abilities and experience. None of it would have been worthwhile without the support and generosity of our volunteers who gave their time, businesses who sponsored us and individuals who donated towards our fundraising. To date, over £70,000 has been raised which in itself is outstanding. Thank you everyone! “It’s a Small World……….”

“The internet on this occasion made this world -wide commitment to the values of the Kingdom of God so instantly apparent..”

In July, on holiday in Ireland, we attended the Sunday morning Mass at the National Shrine of Our Lady, an international pilgrimage centre. The priest announced that the collection that day would be sent in support of children’s work in a war-zone in South Sudan. Immediately after Mass, I texted Maria, the sister of my Swedish daughterin-law, who works for the Church of Sweden in…guess where…South Sudan! “Good news, Maria, …this morning’s collection from the Mass at Knock is on its way to you”. A text came back almost immediately…. “That’s great, Chris…next week I shall be in Khartoum, to meet the Archbishop of Canterbury, for the installation of the new Anglican Archbishop in the new province in Sudan.” Sure enough, a week later, via Instagram, I had photos of Maria with Justin Welby! Prayers at that Mass in Knock were accompanied by acts of solidarity… the sending of money was an expression of

the Church’s engagement world-wide with victims of war and violence. Swedish Lutherans have people in place all across the developing world, working with ecumenical and other partner agencies in the struggle for justice and peace. The internet on this occasion made this world-wide commitment to the values of the Kingdom of God so instantly apparent. Parishes here in our own Leicester diocese are seriously committed to giving financial and other support to the work especially in our twin dioceses in Tanzania in East Africa and Trichy in South India. Those Churches in South Sudan, in Trichy and in Tanzania are experiencing amazing growth and renewal…our very own curate, Alison, has recently visited India. Very different places, very different contexts, very different personalities…but common to them all is the sense that knowing that they are loved by God means reflecting and sharing that love to those around, especially to those who are at the margins of our society, whose voice is never heard or who have a daily struggle even

to stay alive. Discipleship in these places means being where Jesus is, and He is met precisely among the refugees, the homeless, the hungry and the sick. No wonder those places are experiencing such growth in numbers and in depth of discipleship…God is blessing their work abundantly, as they live out an authentic Christian discipleship which involves service of others and sharing through daily living the values of the Kingdom…justice, mercy and peace. One thing this experience in Knock has done for me is to deepen further my recognition that when I share the Peace and the bread and wine at the Eucharist in one of our churches, that sharing needs to stretch out way beyond the walls of that building…to a world which is hungry and which is desperate to know that Peace which is God’s gift to us and His will for us. Our 2nd to last game arrived and it was the much anticipated re-arranged game away against Knossington, a good bunch of lads who had thoroughly beaten us at the home game and with a strong side we were confident of turning our fortunes against them around. Losing the toss we went to field in what looked like a ridge & furrow nightmare.... Our enigmatic Captain Ed Ward, so consistent with the ball this year had a great start with a wicket in his first over, not quite the previous written moon ball but certainly a good effort and a wicket with the last ball of the over, with Joe Renshaw at the other end their run rate was restricted and before you know it Ed has another 2 wickets with what has to be the catch of the year from Neale Findley running over ridge & furrow almost disappearing from sight to take an amazing catch. Finally the Almighty Renshaw took a wicket in his 4th over and Knossigton we thought were on the ropes at 23 for 4. How wrong we were, they consolidated their position and found themselves on 80 for 4 from 24 overs, still confident in a 35 over match and with Tom taking a wicket followed by

Jamie also trapping one LBW we thought we were on for a win but in came their fixture secretary who quickly started dispatching 6's around the ground. Quickly hitting 50 and finding themselves on 166 for 6 Dave Turner retired Knossington on 32 overs confident that they had a total they could defend. Miles bowled well and got his first maiden and even managed to hold on to a catch in this match. Jones & Renshaw took to the field, the almighty claiming he would take his time, it lasted 2 balls before he was bowled in the 2nd over for 2 and Jones was joined at the crease by Jamie, keeping their heads we held our nerve, quickly putting some runs on the board before Jamie was caught. Joined at the crease by Moss keen to shrug his poor performance we set about the bowling and scored slowly but steadily before Jones was out on 12 quickly followed by Moss on 12, Kilworth were 43 for 5 off 15 overs. Still in the chase with the run rate not lost, unfortunately we struggled from this point on, Hugo and Ian Jones putting on a brief stand until Hugo was bowled and then into the crease went Ed but quickly scoring 10 he was also caught going for the big shot. Ian "Ox" Jones batted with everyone as we came back in, Joe "Almighty" Renshaw tried to put them off by causing a small earthquake as he stumbled going for a quick single in his second innings but was unfortunately runout and with no one else able to make a dent we gracefully admitted defeat having scored 89 from 34 overs.

So to the game of the season, Over 40's v Under 40's and the Under 40's full of confidence this year that they were going to take the overs apart, Ed Ward & Simon Jones went to the wicket and with the Overs winning the Toss, Jones put the Unders in to bat. The wicket looked fantastic, Mick Faulkner had once again done a great job. Unfortunately the Unders were struggling as one of their important players was at an All England National Bowls final and had taken support with him, well done Tommy for getting to the final and better luck next year. Ian Jones and Boob took to the field, with Neale & Goggsy opening the bowling, a tight spell restricting the openers to 14 runs and a wicket each with a great catch from Steve Bell, this however brought in the ringers Hugo (last years man of the match for the unders) & his older brother George and they set to work, scoring freely but slowly thanks to some great bowling from Aiden & Graham both of them going for less than 20 but the lads looked comfortable at the crease and runs started to flow before Vince managed to get the wicket of Hugo and the Unders on 71 for 3 off 14 with 6 overs to go in came Adam "Duck" Moss looking to score that elusive 1000 runs he talked about all season alas at 5 being bowled by Vince having a great spell. No one really troubled the scorer's after that, Vince got a 3rd wicket, Steve O and Simon J each taking a wicket, a good spell from Richard the Unders were 114 from their 22 overs. Goggsy almost back flipped in an amazing attempt to catch George W but alas it bounced off the glove but what a catch it would have been. The Unders were confident that this was there year as Richard & Aiden went in to Bat, Captain Ward who had bowled superbly all year

was clearly taking it seriously as he opened the bowling restricting the run rate in his spell but no wickets today. Adam however at the other end bowling like Malinga soon took the wicket, it was 5 for 1 after 1.2 overs but in came Jones who was looking to stabilise the innings and built a partnership with Aiden, scoring freely the Overs were at 42 when Aiden was out LBW for 9 from a demon ball by Boob and the finger went up in a flash bringing Graham to the wicket, the pair continued to score, rolling back the years with quick singles and the odd 2 (gonna hurt in the morning) before Jones on 27 was caught by Moss who celebrated enthusiastically. In strolled Bruce, minus his usual piece of willow he picked up the mantle and the runs were quickly being knocked off, Graham retired on 23 with Neale (6) & Les (not out) making visits to the crease the game was won with 3 overs to spare. The Overs once again triumphant scoring 115 for 4 off 19 overs and taking the annual match to a 3 wins to 1 in favour of the more experienced and considered Over 40's. The biggest crowd to be seen in some years applauded as we left> the field and the banter began as the beer & burgers flowed. It was a great day, lots of fun was had, the BBQ raised £90 towards equipment for next year, thanks to Terry, Rachel, Karen & Sally for helping with the food. The season was a great success, special thanks must go to Mick Faulkner for his efforts on the wicket, Nick (trigger) Hardwick & Bristol Jerr for their umpiring skills, Ed for his Captaincy and the ladies that provided excellent teas, Rachel, Kate, Caroline & Ed. Special thanks must also go the Parish Council who so generously supported our funding application which will allow us continued growth and better equipment. North Kilworth Sports Club Hello Villagers, We had a wonderful evening, on Saturday 9th September, for the Jersey Budd Charity night, as you can see from the photographs. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that came from near and far & who contributed to a fabulous evening of fundraising. We raised £1399 in total for Wishes for Kids and everyone commented on what a brilliant evening it was. We hope to put on a quarterly fund raising event and rotate the chosen charity, as we believe all charities locally deserve as much help as we can give them. We would like to remind villagers new and old that the public bar is open Monday to Sunday showing Sky Sport and B.T Sport and serving a selection of real ales. The committee are always working hard to improve the facilities on offer and welcome any feedback from all customers. We highly recommend you join us for our very popular monthly winter quiz that starts at 7pm on Saturday 21st October. Soup Lunch

September’s Soup Lunch was very well attended and raised £106 which has been sent to Christian Aid. Next month the Lunch will be on Tuesday 17th October, 12.30-1.30 in church. On Sunday 15th October there will be a HARVEST LUNCH in church. There will be two courses, picnic style, with a choice of ploughman’s platter followed by pudding. Tickets from Liz (880262), Carolyn (880769) or Sarah (880883) at a cost of £7 (primary school children free). Half the profit will be donated to Lutterworth Food Bank. You are welcome to bring your own drinks but please remember to bring glasses too.

Although colder, it’s a beautiful time of year with the trees changing colour and the scenery adapting to the season. Divide established rhubarb crowns to create new plants. Divide herbaceous perennials. Cut back perennials that have died down. Plant out spring cabbages. Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges when mild as they will slow down growing now. Finish collecting seeds from the garden to sow next year. Good time of year to lay new turf where lawn needs Renovating.

North Kilworth Women’s Institute The September meeting was well attended to hear Julie Ede speak about Bess of Hardwick – a fascinating account of one of the richest women in the 16th century. Beautifully presented by Ms Ede, members were fascinated by the tale of a woman who rose to prominence through her determination (and despatched 4 husbands along the way!!!!) The next meeting will be on October 19th and the speaker will be Colleen Powell on ‘Helping hedgehogs’ Do hope to see all our members and guests there and any new members are always very welcome on 3rd Thursdays in the Village Hall @ 7.30

North Kilworth Reading Group The next meeting of the North Kilworth Reading Group is on Thursday 26th October at 8.00pm, venue tbc. The book under discussion is ‘Father and Son’ by Edmund Gosse. First published anonymously in 1907, this sensitive and very moving autobiography follows the young life of Edmund as he is brought up by a strictly religious parent (Plymouth Brethren) in stifling isolation and as he starts to explore and confront the boundaries of his life. Although there have been many questions as to how accurate a portrayal the book is of his early life and its damning portrayal of Edmund’s eminent father – Philip Henry Gosse, the Victorian naturalist and marine biologist – it is none the less a fascinating glimpse of a life dominated by a rigid interpretation of Christianity. The Reading Group would very much welcome new members and are always looking for suggestions on new books to read. The monthly meeting is an informal affair, taking place in different members houses and enlivened by a glass or two of wine! Do join us! North Kilworth Bowls Club The competitive bowling season is now drawing to a close and, by the time this newsletter is published, all matches for the 2017 season will have been played. Arrangements have been made for the 'winter works' to be undertaken to set the green up ready for the start of the 2018 season. This is always a difficult time of the year as the emergence of the bowling surface in the spring depends very much on the type of winter which we have had. We always fervently hope that we have avoided the grass being attacked by the dreaded fusarium during the winter. In the South Leicestershire Triples League the club finished the season in mid table and our thanks go to Mr. Steve Harding who captained the league team for the 2017 season. The members who went on the August Bank Holiday bowls tour enjoyed their time in Whitby and the surrounding area, some competitive bowling on different greens, the post-match and evening 're-hydration' and the excellent weather over the period. The management committee are now planning our winter social events and we hope, when the dates are released (watch this space), that any villagers who wish to join us do not feel constrained in any way from coming along. We look forward to welcoming members, guests and anyone else who is looking for some Saturday night entertainment. Don't forget the Clubhouse (with a re-equipped kitchen) is available if you are planning any event and that there is a bar which can be opened if required. Belgrave Village Hall Thank you to everyone who attended the alfresco lunch on 10th September and to all the hosts who made the day into the usual lovely event. This of course wouldn't happen without people who are so generous with their time to wash up and help our day run smoothly. The event raised approximately £350 for the upkeep of the Village Hall. The hall is looking as smart as it can be and given that so many groups use it, shows how everyone in the village looks after such a great community facility. Our next big fundraising event to support the village hall is the quiz on the 25th of November, tickets are £10 each to include a 2 course hot supper. The wining team will win wine! SAFARI SUPPER - Saturday 10th March 2018 We're off on safari again! The Floodlit Sports Association are organising the 2018 Safari Supper. Here is how it works. Meet at the Village Hall to buy your drinks to take with you for the evening and find out where you are going for your starter. Don't worry if you don't know anyone, we will introduce you to your hosts and maps of the village will be available if you need them Enjoy your starter and find out where you are going for your main Enjoy your main and find out where you are going for your dessert After dessert you head back to the Village Hall for coffee, drinks, liquors and music! We need hosts to cook either a starter, main or dessert catering for 8 people but not everyone needs to cook. If it's your first year of the Safari Supper and you would prefer not to cook let us know. When booking your place please let us know if you have any dietary requirements and, if you are happy to cook, let us know which course you would prefer to do. This is a great evening with usually 90 - 100 people taking part but there is no limit. The funds raised for the Safari Supper go towards the upkeep of the children's playground in the village and the floodlit tennis courts. We need final figures by the first week in January so we can start organising things.
