12.12.2017 The world’s 47 least developed countries1 (LDCs) are falling far behind the rest of the developing world in terms of getting power to homes and businesses according to the recent report The Least Developed Countries Report 2017: Transformational Energy Access by UNCTAD. “Achieving SDG 7 is not only a question of satisfying households’ basic energy needs. That in itself has valuable welfare implications, but we need to go beyond… For electrification to transform LDC economies, modern energy provision needs to spur productivity increases and unlock the production of more goods and services.” The UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi commented ahead of the report’s publication. The report highlights that renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, could have a revolutionary effect in rural areas, home to 82% of those without power in LDCs, and help to overcome the historical obstacles to rural electrification but important technological, economic and institutional obstacles need to be overcome in the LDCs to turn this into a reality. The current investment in the sector is still far the required level US$12 billion to US$40 billion per year when total official development assistance to the energy sector is just US$3 billion per year. Domestic resources for public investment are scarce in most LDCs, and most also face serious limits to borrowing without risking an unsustainable debt burden. Read the full report >>

22.9.2017 SimGas is growing fast in Kenya, currently at ~200 sales per month. This great success is partly made possible by Lendahand crowdfunding: it enables us to prefinance our biogas digesters for our customers, such that they can each get a loan to own a biogas digester. This has made access to biogas – the cleanest, easiest and most reliable off-grid cooking fuel – affordable to millions of rural households in Kenya. With a loan of EUR 84,400, SimGas will provide loans to another 125 farmers living in the Kenyan counties Muranga and Meru to enable them to each acquire a SimGas biogas system. You can invest directly in SimGas Kenya from as little at €50 to as much as you want, at an interest rate of 6.25% p.a.
