Spelthorne Care Connections

NOTICE BOARD October 2017

Changing seasons.. Autumn colour is appearing, and there can be much enjoyment in seeing the seasonal changes. Change in our lives is sometimes welcome, other times changes come uninvited and trouble us. Life is about change: it’s good to be aware of how we can best manage change for ourselves, and we become all the more informed as we help others through their times of change and need. We can appreciate how change brings challenge and this is the case for people as they grow older and lose friends, familiar contacts and opportunities. Age and immobility isolates. ‘Get Online Week’ is the first week of October and aims to promote help to the older generations by introducing them to online possibilities, and develop their skills in using digital media. I support any such help to the elderly. However I am stirred to suggest we also have a ‘Being Offline Week’! I say this to highlight the isolation many feel; those not connected to the internet OR really wanting to be. What a good number of elderly people call for – and I certainly identify with this – is neighbourly, approachable and available face-toface contact with others, real contact and socialisation and to have someone be alongside to support them when it becomes necessary. Changes in our society have continued to isolate and we store up problems when we reduce person to person contact through our digital world.

With Kind Regards Nigel Drury, Community Connector for Spelthorne

It’s Get Online Week 2-8 October so Surrey County Council and partners have teamed up to offer you a varied programme of free ‘taster’ events where you can learn the basics of using computers and the internet. This year’s theme is Try 1 Thing – use the internet to do just one thing you’d normally do in a shop or bank, at a doctor’s surgery or chemist, or even over the phone. There are so many things you could try online - apply for or renew your Blue Badge; renew library books; order groceries; send an email instead of a letter; speak to family and friends face-to-face on a video call using your tablet or laptop – it’s often cheaper than using the phone. If you’re an unpaid carer, there’s an online tool available called Jointly. It’s been designed by carers to try and make looking after someone a little easier to manage, and you access it via the internet from a computer or mobile phone (smartphone). There’s something for everyone. Come to an event near you and find out how the internet can make life easier, cheaper, and more fun. Take a look at what’s on where. NB. Use the links in light blue lettering in above text.

Get Online Week Learn the basics – FREE one-to-one sessions at Ashford Library, 34 Church Street, Ashford TW15 2XB. Friday 6th October, sessions 10:30am -12:30pm; 1:30pm – 3:30pm Develop your confidence using the computer and learn basic computer skills with help and one-to-one support from your local library’s friendly staff and volunteers. Drop in sessions may also be available on the day, with the option to book longer appointments with one of the 40 digital buddies. Bring your own device if you prefer. All branches have free WiFi, screen reader software, large-screen computers, large keyboards and trackball mice. There’s free access to computers for library members (and visitor memberships). Please note, charges apply to guest visitors.

Book appointments online with your GP - Come to Sunbury Health Centre during Get Online Week where Healthwatch Surrey will explain the benefits of signing up to online services, and demonstrate how you can manage your appointments and prescriptions online. Ask for more information at your own surgery too. Friday 6th October – Healthwatch Surrey, Sunbury Health Centre, Green Street, Sunbury-On-Thames, TW16 6RH To book, call 0303 303 0023 or text 07592 787533.
