Upcoming Public Lectures Averil Cameron, November 10 5:30pm Dame Averil Cameron, recently retired from the Wardenship of Keble College, Oxford, will be our Visiting Scholar during November 2011. Well known for her work on the late sixth century, gender, the seventh century and polemic, she is currently working on a new project on dialogue, and will be talking about it in a public lecture on 10 November. She will also lead a discussion while she is here on the absence of theology, both in Early Christian and Byzantine Studies.

News from the libr ary Over the summer, three paleography interns catalogued 572 of the Library’s collection of microfilm of manuscripts. Once completed, the database will be made available on the Dumbarton Oaks website but in the meantime, researchers can browse and search the exisiting records using a simple interface on the Library’s computers on levels 4 and 1. Please see librarians Deb or Sarah on level 4 for assistance or questions.

announcements The dates for the next Greek Language Summer School have been released. The course will take place from June 4 - 30, 2012 and will be under the direction of AliceMary Talbot and Stratis Papaioannou. For more information go to www.doaks.org

Gender database The Bibliography on Gender in Byzantium is about to go live on the doaks.org website. This bibliography builds on the Bibliography on Women in Byzantium, prepared by Thalia Gouma-Peterson, Alice-Mary Talbot, Judith Herrin, Margaret Schaus, Ewald Kislinger, Lynda Garland, Carolyn L. Connor, Anne McClanan, Thelma K. Thomas, Anne Derbes, Christine Havice, Dusan Korac, and Radivoj Radic. It includes material from bibliographies by Chris Africa, Gillian Clark, Monica Green, Paul Halsall, Judith Herrin, and Abdulaziz Ramadan. Nate Aschenbrenner, summer intern in Byzantine Studies, updated it and added entries for men and eunuchs during the summer of 2011. He completed the work and is now at King’s College, London, completing his MA there. If you have additions please email us at [email protected] and we will try to include your entries. It will be maintained by Susannah Italiano.
