News from Ms. Davagian - 7th grade Science 7th Grade Science students have been exploring the ways that matter and energy are cycled through ecosystems. We dissected owl pellets and identified the remains of the organisms in the owls’ diets. With that information, we constructed food webs for each owl. As an extension, some students reconstructed skeletons of the organisms found. We’ve also surveyed the Carbon, Nitrogen, and Water Cycles and will next explore how ecosystems change over time in the process known as succession.

From the Desk of Ms. Corron We wrote our own Spanish version of the SMS Newsletter in ESPAÑOL! Here are some of the finished products! Very professional and ready for print!

We’re bringing conjugations back! 8th grade Spanish students will learn about the process of verb conjugation and how important it is for verbs to agree with subjects. With this knowledge, students are able to talk about their daily activities in Spanish. By practicing with various games including Verb Voleibol, Knock Out, Battleship, and Board Games, students’ conjugation skills will develop! Students will continue to expand their sentences and provide details about their daily activities such as time, place, who they are with, etc. The “TACO” graphic organizer helps students elaborate on their activities in fun and innovative ways! El Día de los Muertos is a significant and important holiday that is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd in the Hispanic culture. Each year, 8th grade students learn about this holiday and spend time comparing and contrasting Day of the Dead with the American tradition of Halloween as part of the Spanish curriculum. This year 8th grade students will view the movie, The Book of Life, a movie that highlights aspects of Mexican culture as well as the Hispanic tradition of el Día de los Muertos. It encourages viewers to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future. The Book of Life features bright and vibrant imagery that brings culture to life. The 8th grade team organized a special Halloween Historical Tour of Sutton Center to tie in local traditions and customs related to honoring the dead. Page !8

7th Grade World Language Students have busy throughout the month of October learning how to share information in French about the things they like and like to do. They have also been introduced to the subject pronouns in French and to the concept of verb conjugation. With this information they were able to create and perform skits in French as well as write a letter to their new imaginary e-pal, Robert. For Halloween, we will be enjoying a spooky treat: “visiting” the Catacombs under the streets of Paris and the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery. We will learn how French people remember their departed family members during La Toussaint (All Saints’ Day). Students will design a tombstone in honor of a famous French person who excelled in the areas of science, literature, government or art. Our last few weeks of French will take cover the topic of French dining habits and the café. Be prepared to listen to vocabulary about food and drinks before the Thanksgiving break!

Sixth Grade Computers with Mrs. Watts Students are learning all about how computers work and started with their drawings of what they imagined was inside a computer. These were very colorful and creative pieces of art. As they discovered more about the workings of computers, students typed their responses in Google Docs, following the MLA guidelines they will use throughout middle and high school. Students also did hardware comparisons between my lab and a new middle school lab. They participated in Page !13

From the health office The middle school screenings have begun in the heath office. The seventh grade screening will take place during gym class throughout the school year, and include height, weight, hearing, vision, and posture. This year we are initiating a screening program in grade 7 related to the use of alcohol, marijuana and other substances. The goal of this program is to let the students know that we are available to reinforce healthy decisions and to assist them in obtaining support if needed for substance use related problems. Postural screenings for the 6th and 8th grade will be done on a date to be determined. As a reminder, the health office does not carry allergy or cold medication. If you feel your child may need these medications throughout the school year, please administer them at home.

Students Tour Atlas ! Students and teachers from Sutton Middle School participated in a STEM career exploration program by visiting international advanced manufacturer AGS (Atlas Global Solutions). The program, which coincides with Massachusetts Manufacturing Month, was sponsored by Blackstone Valley Education Foundation (BVEF). The students attended a welcome session conducted by management that introduced them to the global reach of the company, its products, and its multiple overseas facilities. Employees then conducted tours of the facility, including production areas, research and development, and product inventory. The focus of the tour was to inform students about the multiple STEM career areas in a large global manufacturer. Tours were followed by a panel presentation and discussion relating to how individual workers and managers became involved in their jobs, courses they took in high school, and their continuing education and training beyond high school. Lunch was then provided so that students could informally continue discussions with several of the workers.

Hatchet Day The sixth grade recently participated in Hatchet Day on the Cedar Swamp Nature Trail. Students began the day with a creative writing assignment on first person point-of-view. Then students worked in teams to design their ideal survival strategy if they became lost in the woods. After eating lunch in the woods, kids completed three activities that were inspired by Gary Paulsen’s novel, Hatchet. Students walked the trail while spotting aspects of nature. They then built bird’s nests from items found in the pine grove. Finally, student worked in pairs to complete a trust walk through the woods. Page !17

Applications of Science One of the last projects before the end of the rotation for the 6th graders was the Four Forces of Flight. The students learned about the forces that affect an airplane: thrust, drag, lift and gravity. The students then designed and created paper airplanes. The goal was to fly it the furthest down the hallway. One group’s plane flew almost 20 meters! In 7th grade, the students learned about transportation pipelines. Their challenge was to design and build a pipeline that was three meters in length, contained three angles (one of which was a right angle), had a height differential of no more than 50 cm, and could transport both a golf ball and a ping pong ball.

The 8th graders were learning about manufacturing in October. The last project for the rotation was to research a manufactured product and create a presentation on how the product is made. Some of the products that we learned about through the presentations included bullet proof vests, mascara, baseball and softball bats, Legos, garden gnomes, chicken nuggets and basketballs.

News from Mrs. Vanderkeyl Good Enough to Eat? These food sculptures were created by 7th-grade artists. The art was closely modeled after the student's favorite foods. They needed to include lots of details and texture to create this illusion which included pieces of rice, cheese on tacos, and butter on bread. To complete the sculptures, students set their "tables" by adding utensils, chopsticks, drinks, etc.
