Provision Name: ITEM 9005-0007 - DYNAMIC PILE LOAD TESTING Instructions for Usage: Use when specified on the foundation approval letter and/or in the general notes on the structure plans indicates. When using this item, use work class code(s) U. Header: ITEM 9005-0007 - DYNAMIC PILE LOAD TESTING Provision Body: I. DESCRIPTION— This work is providing dynamic pile load testing and analyses as outlined herein. Conduct dynamic testing on the specified pile(s) at each substructure as indicated or as directed by the Representative. Conduct dynamic testing during the entire time length of piles are initially driven and during the the time piles are re-driven, if re-drive is specified. applicable per separate Special Provision. The purpose of dynamic testing is to provide the Department with supplemental information for evaluating pile hammer performance, driving stresses, potential pile damage and bearing capacities. The number of piles dynamically tested may be increased, decreased, or entirely deleted from the Contract at the discretion of the Representative. II. MATERIALEQUIPMENT— Provide dynamic pile load testing with equipment and accessories conforming to the requirements of ASTM D4945-12, Standard Test Method for High-Strain Dynamic Testing of Deep Foundations, for the dynamic testing and analyses as specified. Use the same hammer and equipment that was used for the dynamic testingas proposed to install the production piles III. CONSTRUCTION— (a) Qualifications. Employ an organization having documented experience in the use of dynamic pile load testing and related equipment to install or supervise the installation of the necessary equipment and to perform the dynamic testing. Perform the dynamic testing with a Professional Engineer and operators experienced in dynamic testing meeting the following qualifications and submitting proper documentation: 1.

The dynamic testing operator will have a minimum of three (3) years of experience that demonstrates successful performance on at least three (3) projects in similar geotechnical conditions and pile type with the use of high-strain dynamic pile testing. Include a brief description of each project and the name and phone number of the owner’s representative knowledgeable in each project listed. Page 1 of 3

2.

Furnish the full name and license number of a Professional Engineer registered in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, having at least five (5) years of experience in the performance of dynamic testing of driven piles, who is to supervise responsible for the work performed and preparinge test reports. 3. Do not use only the company names of consultants or manufacturers to meet the requirements of this section; use the names of the personnel. 4. Submit documentation of staff qualifications to the Representative and allow at least 21 calendar days for approval. 5. Submit proposed methods of documentation and reports to the Representative for approval. Include the format of the electronic template for the submission of pile driving records. 6.5. Dynamic testing will not begin prior to obtaining approval by the Representative. (b) Submittals. Submit proposed methods of documentation and reports to the Representative for approval. Include the format of the electronic template for the submission of pile driving records. Deliver to the Representative the printed output records from the dynamic pile load testing together with data to correlate the records with the respective pile and driving records as the tests are completed. Supply this information to the Representative within 24 hours of testing. Record all signals on approved electronic media. Perform supplementary office analyses on pile(s) dynamically tested, as directed by the Representative, which exhibit unusual field conditions. Include an interpretive report that summarizes pertinent field data, to determine pile tip elevations, pile capacity, soil resistance distribution, dynamic soil properties of shaft and toe quake and damping resistances, and driving stresses throughout the pile for each substructure unit. Evaluate and report the pile capacity versus plan factored axial resistances, maximum measured driving stress at absolute refusal, hammer system efficiency, and pile structural damage/integrity. Submit a preliminary report within 48 hours of dynamic testing. andSubmit a complete report with the information as outlined per ASTM D4945-12, signed and sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to the Representative within five (5) days of testing. (b)(c) Dynamic Pile Testing. Perform dynamic pile testing only if the Representative is present for witnessing during the entire time piles are driven or re-driven. Notify the Representative of a tentative schedule for testing at least 21 calendar days before starting the tests. Notify the Representative of a firm date at least 48 hours before starting the tests, but give the notice between start of work on Monday and noon of the following Friday. Do not schedule dynamic testing on Saturdays, Sundays, or Holidays without prior approval from the Representative.

Perform dynamic testing following procedures as defined in ASTM D4945-12. Drill the necessary holes in the pile to fasten a pair of transducers and a pair of accelerometers. Drive the pile while testing until ordered to stop by the Representative. Remove the transducers and accelerometers after the dynamic testing is completed. Contractor is responsible for submitting a repair scheme to the Representative, for acceptance, to Sseal any drilled holes of the pile if that section is to be used for the substructure.

(d) Use the dynamic pile load testing to furnish the Representative a Dynamic Pile Testing Report with, at the minimum, the following values per blow count: 1. Input and reflection values of force and velocity 2. Maximum transferred energy, maximum compression stress, maximum tensile stress, bearing capacity, pile capacity, velocity, and displacement 3. Hammer operating rate in blows per minute (include ram strokes, fuel settings, pressures, etc. as applicable) 4. Value of upward and downward traveling force wave

(e) Deliver to the Representative the printed output records from the dynamic pile load testing together with data to correlate the records with the respective pile and driving records as the tests are completed. (f) Perform supplementary office analyses on pile(s) dynamically tested, as directed by the Representative, which exhibit unusual field conditions. Include an interpretive report that summarizes pertinent field data, to determine pile tip elevations, pile capacity, soil resistance distribution, dynamic soil properties of shaft and toe quake and damping resistances, and driving stresses throughout the pile for each substructure unit. IV. MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT— Each Applies if dynamic testing is performed while driving the entire length of pile, including redrive-driving if applicablewhen specified. All associated costs of furnishing dynamic testing services and equipment, tools, labor, and work necessary to conduct the dynamic testing and to provide the data and results specified is incidental to this item. Page 3 of 3

The number of tests may be revised by the Representative due to subsurface conditions or due to hammer performance. No extra time or payment will be made for the following: • • • • •

Testing that is unable to be completed or is terminated by the Contractor prior to driving the entire length of the pile as determined by the Representative. Work determined by the Representative to be unsatisfactory due to improper driving methods, inadequate equipment and materials, or unacceptable splice or tip welding. Cost for interruptions, delays, time lost due to malfunction, breakdown of equipment, or inclement weather. Any additional testing done without the prior approval of the Representative. All costs associated with replacing a hammer rejected due to unacceptable performance or inadequate capacity based on the dynamic pile load testing results, or if the contractor should choose to replace an already accepted hammer. These costs include, but are not limited to, transporting the replacement hammer to the job site, unloading and setup, additional analyses and submissions, additional dynamic pile load tests required for the replacement hammer acceptance, lost production time, etc. Prior to driving any piles with the new hammer, the Contractor must submit the operating specifications and Pile Hammer Data sheet (CS-5 form) in order to request a WEAP analysis for acceptance of the proposed hammer; following the same submission process and procedural process for acceptance as was required for the original hammer.
