______________CShIZqX³ ____________ FROM THE VICAR’S DESK Dear loved ones in Christ, Greetings in the name of our savior and risen Jesus Christ. Let us give thanks to God almighty for His miraculous guidance. The new academic year of our children will be starting by next week. Let us pray for our children’s education. In the month of April, the faith journey of our Parish has been completing 37 years. Let us praise the Lord, the master of the Church. One more Easter celebration has gone by. The Church meditated about the Risen Lord in these weeks after resurrection. I would like to share a few thoughts about the experience of the risen Lord. The Bible is a collection and reflection of experiences. It contains the experience of God by God’s people, from different dimensions. Christian faith is built up on these experiences of God’s people in different life contexts and different situations and circumstances. The experience of the risen Lord by the disciples of Jesus Christ and by others who believed in Him has become the foundation of Christian faith. One of the most touching incidents of the appearance of the risen Lord is given in John 21: 1-14. Here the disciples experienced the risen Lord in an all together different situation. The context of the risen Lord’s appearance and the way the disciples are treated by the risen lord are very special. This incident provides us some insights about the risen lord as we face the ups and downs in our daily Christian life. 1) Those who experience the love of risen Lord. The incident in John 21:1-14 took place after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Once Jesus was killed on the cross, the disciples lost all their hopes. They couldn’t fully believe in the resurrection accounts. They could only think of going back to their old job of fishing. Simon Peter took the lead and declared that he was returning to his old job. Six other disciples also joined him. This is a clear case of losing one’s commitment due to backsliding and lack of faith. But the Risen Lord, comes to them, seeking them in this pathetic situation. The risen Lord doesn’t blame them for their decision. He accepts them in their condition and tries to bring them back. The unconditional love is a characteristic mark of Jesus’ ministry revealed here. Do we recognize the love of the risen Lord? 2) Those who experience the care of the risen Lord. Peter and his friends toiled the whole night in the sea, but they caught nothing. They were disappointed and discouraged. The physical and the mental exhaustion must have made them very tired. But in the midst of their discouragement and struggle the risen Lord appears to them. John 21: 5, says “Jesus said to them, Children do you have any fish?” They answered him “No”. Jesus tries to re-establish his relationship with them by calling them children. He gives them guidance in their fishing and encourages their stooping hearts. When they listened to his word, they caught a net full of fish. Then he goes on to prepare breakfast for them, like a caring mother and invites them to eat. This action of the risen Lord reminds us of Psalm 23: which speaks of the providing and protecting shepherd. The risen Lord took care of their needs, despite the fact that they were unfaithful to him. Do we experience the care of the Risen Lord? 3) Those who experience the restoration of the risen Lord. When the risen Christ won back the disciples who had turned away, He loved them. He helped them to restore their commitment. In John 21:15-19, the risen Lord calls them back to the discipleship, finally Peter decided to fully commit himself to follow Christ. By revealing himself to the disappointed disciples who had lost all their hopes, the risen Christ instills a new confidence in them and helps them to rededicate their life to God. Thus the risen Lord demonstrated his unfailing love to the erring disciples and it is this undeserved love that motivated them to make a new beginning in their life discipleship. As a result, the disciples were transformed and renewed to continue God’s work and mission in a renewed way. Only if we recognize this Risen Lord in our daily life, our Christian life becomes meaningful to us and to others. May the Risen Lord help us to a blessed Christian life. Yours in His Service. Paul Achen. 2
