WIT-TSSG ranks in the top 10 research institutes in Europe and is Ireland’s largest research centre in the ICT domain. The TSSG is unique in the Irish research landscape; it has a very high level inter-disciplinary view of the communications services space, linking basic science research expertise with engineering expertise. Founded in 1996, the TSSG has grown into a large research centre (over 34 active projects, with 154 completed projects, 115 active staff and students 1996-2011). The group has a fifteen year track record in research under Europe’s ICT framework programme, with over 62 such projects to date, including 23 in FP7 were for example the TSSG are prime contractors on the ICT 4WARD, ICT AutoI, and ICT EFIPSANS projects and coordinators of the ICT Persist, ICT ThinkTrust and ICT IncoTrust projects. The TSSG’s main area of research is in communication software services encompassing emerging architectures for the management of complex communications and Internet systems as well as next generation service development and deployment. The TSSG have been collaborating with the University of Boston, and i2CAT since 2009 to advance on the research and dissemination of the RINA architecture. The results of this collaboration include the publication of a number of papers, the contribution to the improvement of the RINA specifications and the ongoing development of a RINA prototype.

Since the start of the IBCN group in 1992, research resulted in over 1200 publications in international journals and conference proceedings, 60 PhDs, 30 international awards, and four spinoff companies. Predictable Network Solutions Ltd (PNSol) PNSol was founded in 2003 to provide insight on large and complex network projects at the leading edge of feasibility, both technical and commercial. Coming from a strong scientific and engineering background PNSol quickly found that the tools and techniques available were inadequate for the tasks they were being asked to perform. Their response was to construct both the mathematical basis and the practical tools that were needed to service customers’ needs. Since then PNSol have continued to work at this leading edge, spanning the issues of: performance; quality of experience; design and operational risks/hazards; and total cost of ownership. PNSol have taken those tools and techniques and industrialised them. PNSol have a strong track record of resolving issues that were previously thought intractable. They have worked with: major system integrators; network operators, both fixed and mobile; industry regulators; international research centres; network equipment manufacturers; and public sector bodies. PNSol telecommunications customers include small ISPs, medium sized national service providers and also large global carriers.
