The Voices at Our Seder Rabbi David Steinhardt

D

ear Friends,

There are many voices at our seder as we read the haggadah and sing some of the most familiar and beautiful songs of our people. What are the voices? Where do they come from? There are the voices of the future; our children and grandchildren. These are the voices asking questions. These voices may be pure or they may be complicated. It depends on their ages and their sophistication. They are voices that may have enthusiasm that needs to be encouraged. And they are voices of curiosity; answers may be given, but more questions are definitely coming. More singing is needed. Learning must continue! Can you hear your own voices from childhood? Can we keep the freshness of youth alive? There are the voices of past generations. Grandparents, Bubbes and Zaydes, Nanas and Poppas, Aunts and Uncles. They told us stories, and they brought their ideas and their opinions. They too sang. The past generation’s experience of the seder continues to resonate with us. It was not just a story that “We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt...” It was their generation’s story. They knew the horrors of their own persecution. They were alive during the Shoah. They also experienced redemption, coming to the freedom of America and seeing the birth of a Jewish State. After thousands of years, the promise was realized. The voices of the past generation were also conflicted. They wondered about God and his promise after the death of six million. They felt the glory of God’s presence in a new Jerusalem, rebuilt and thriving! And they taught us. There is the voice of the bitter. It is in the narrative that our lives were embittered, we were oppressed and we were enslaved. And there is a voice of hope. It comes from the fact that we have survived, we express our sense that we have been blessed with enough. And so we drink wine, because the promises of liberation and freedom have been fulfilled. As we sit together at our seder this year, can we stretch ourselves and hear these voices? We need to listen hard to the voices of our children. We need to sit, remember and contemplate the voices that are no longer.

3

And one more thing… I believe that we are obligated to hear the voices of others. A primary obligation of the seder is this: In every generation a person is obligated to see oneself as if he or she went out from Egypt. This is an extraordinary responsibility. For some, it means that we are to remember the pain of our past in order to make sure that we are vigilant against those who hate us. For some, it means that we are obligated to remember the experience of our past so that we connect to God who performed wonders and miracles. And while both are true, in my reading of our texts and our Jewish experience, I think the verse calls on us in another way: We were slaves. We’ve been oppressed. We have known hatred and bigotry. We have been “othered” by the world. And now, we celebrate our freedom and our strength. As people living in comfort, with wealth and a strong, independent nation, we are to recall the way powerful people oppressed and worked against us. We were the small and weak. We remember what it was like, we do not forget. And it should create within us, empathy for those in pain, those who are hungry, those who are oppressed, and those who are powerless. We must hear those voices. Can we hear the voices of those who remain enslaved? There are 28 million slaves in this world. There are too many hungry people. There are people crying for justice. There are millions of refugees. There are people of different gender, and there are women in the world without freedom. As we sit at our seder table, can we hear those voices too? I hope so. I really do. I wish you and your families a wonderful Pesach, meaningful and enjoyable seders, and moments of hearing the voices of young and old, the past and the present, and the future… and the voices at your table who are not here, but need to be free! And, I hope, over the holiday, to see you in shul…

Let Me End Where I Began ... toby levi, president

I

was honored to become your President at the end of April 2013 and all I can say is “Where did the years go?” I have thoroughly enjoyed my many years in lay leadership and find that B’nai Torah has that balance of tradition and awareness of change that dominates our movement in general and B’nai Torah specifically. I know that we have a congregation filled with caring and bright congregants in all stages of their lives. I have never regretted my decision to belong here as I believe we have one of the most welcoming congregations in Florida.

4

are our spiritual leaders; they are fearless advocates for the risks necessary to create something new and, often, lasting. Our professional staff, who taught me that working as a team is one that performs best and their can-do spirit is focused on a larger good that often made me look good. And, to our Officers and Board of Trustees, who often take so little credit, for bravely asking the tough questions and then coming up with workable answers. Everyone at B’nai Torah provided a platform for innovation and possibility which helped me succeed these past four years. I could not have done anything without their influence and support.

There is also the concept of “tikkun olam” that each and every person in our congregation has a hand in improving our world. As Rabbi Steinhardt once wrote “At B’nai Torah, we are renewing our commitment to making our synagogue a center where charitable giving support networks, food for the hungry, and outreach to the elderly moves from a peripheral dimension of synagogue life, to a core dimension.” We are that community that supports its members in times of illness, loss or distress as well as celebrations and achievements. No wonder B’nai Torah is such a special place.

Honestly, we collectively learn from each other and I am honored to have had such a privilege. I have enjoyed my tenure more than you know. I volunteer because B’nai Torah gives me much more than I give – it provides me with a sense of belonging, a sense of accomplishment and a sense of family. In return, I hope that I have been a good citizen and a decent, caring person. Even though my emotions fluctuate unpredictably, I know I will always be connected to B’nai Torah as it truly was a calling, not a job.

Abraham Joshua Heschel (z”l) wrote “to attain a degree of spiritual security, one cannot rely upon one’s own resources. One needs an atmosphere where the concern for the spirit is shared by a community”. B’nai Torah is that community! What I have loved most about my tenure at B’nai Torah are the people – the opportunity to think, imagine, conspire and work besides the most talented people I know. I give profound thanks to one and all – from our clergy who care deeply about our congregation and

I’ll see you in shul.

Thank you for allowing me to serve, and I am touched and feel truly blessed and honored to be a part of your lives. I wish you joy for your spirit, peace for your soul, and love for your heart.

The Mitzvah of Organ Donation Rabbi David englander

S

halom Friends,

April is National Donate Life Month. It was established in 2003 with a goal, which is to “help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.” Why am I writing about this, other than that you are probably reading this during the month of April? Organ donation represents a Jewish value of the highest order. Neither we nor our loved ones should ever be in a position to donate or to receive someone else’s organs, but the fact is that just about all of know someone who has needed a heart, liver, kidney, lung or other life-saving transplant, and many of us know of donors who, in tragic circumstances, have given this extraordinary gift of life. Sadly, we need to also be aware of the statistic that some twenty-two people die every day while waiting for a transplant. Some of this unmet need is caused directly by potential donors’ wishes not being stated clearly enough (when there is doubt, the donation does not happen), or people who choose to not be donors due to misconceptions about the process. They think (often erroneously) that their religious faith forbids them from being a donor, and so they do not register or identify as one. I can’t speak for other religions (though many are “all-in” on organ donation, supporting and encouraging it) but I can certainly report that Judaism, in almost all of the ways it is practiced, strongly endorses and instructs adherents to be organ donors. On my desk I have a pamphlet titled “Rabbis carry organ donor cards – why not you?” which opens up to pictures and titles of Orthodox leaders including Chief Rabbis in Israel, women who head major institutions of Jewish learning, professors, and doctors, all of whom are self-identified potential donors (see www.hods.org). The Reform and our Conservative movement are in lockstep in advocating for our members to be donors, and the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has even created a card you can fill out and

carry with you, or put with your important papers – just Google Rabbinical Assembly Organ Donation and you will find it. Unfortunately, even people who support the idea of organ donation often do not follow up to let loved ones know that this is their stance. Polls bear out this out very clearly – comparing those who are in favor of organ donation to the numbers who have actually signed a card is the comparison of “a lot” to “a little” (see www.organdonor.gov and click ‘statistics’). There are many false myths that surround organ donation. And there are many connected (and more unconnected) Jews who believe that Judaism frowns on this life-saving practice. And that is not the case. In fact, leading authorities in the Conservative Movement have said it is not only a good idea to sign up as a potential organ donor, but it is required to do so. As Rabbi David Golinkin wrote, “It is not merely permissible for a Jew to bequeath his organs for transplantation following his death, it is a mitzvah for him to do so, in order to save one life, or several lives.” During this “National Donate Life Month” it would be appropriate, welcome, and perhaps even required for us to make sure our loved ones know of our status as donors should that circumstance ever arise. We can be better educated about the process. We can be grateful for the lives that have been saved in our congregation and around the world as a result of this lifesaving choice, and for the work of compassionate and skilled physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers. And we can be reminded that in Jewish life, pikuach nefesh, saving a life, is of primary importance and a representation of a Jewish value so important that it can override all other commandments. Please consider making, or reminding loved ones that you have made this commitment and encourage others to do the same.

Freedom comes with Responsibility Rabbi rikki arad, Executive Director

R

ecently, I met with a lovely family to discuss a sensitive matter concerning their current financial challenges. These challenges included the difficulty they were having in keeping their financial commitments to our congregation. With an upcoming Bar Mitzvah, they expressed how concerned they were about honoring the costs that were being incurred, as well as honoring previously made commitments. This overwhelming fear was casting a dark shadow on their plans to give their son a beautiful and proper celebration. As their story unfolded, it was clear to me that the fear this family was feeling was genuine. The discomfort, angst, and stress in figuring out how they would be able to afford to pay for the upcoming Bar Mitzvah was palpable. As I listened, it got me thinking about the approaching holiday of Passover. This is a holiday of togetherness that illustrates and celebrates the story of our freedom from oppression. Upon further contemplation about the various types of freedoms we have fought for over the years, I also thought about the types of circumstances many people have not been able break free from. Our blessed freedom must come with responsibility. The responsibility to extend a hand to those less fortunate. To help those who are in fear. To help those who are suffering from unspeakable living conditions, abuse, and those who are simply so immobilized by fear they are not be able to move forward. We are also responsible to give those who are suffering, a VOICE. As we’ve read in the Passover Hagaddah, when the fourth son doesn’t even know how to ask a question… that is why we need you. We need you to let us know who in our community needs our assistance and care. We need you to partner with us in facilitating the care that is needed. The family that I mentioned previously, who were fearful that they would

7

be unable to pay for their son’s Bar Mitzvah fees, left my office with a big hug and a smile. Because of YOUR GENEROSITY I was able to reduce their fees, and lift some of the financial burden from their shoulders, and they will be able to celebrate with us. So, why are we talking about this during Passover? We must acknowledge that there are those around us who are much less fortunate than we are. The Torah says V’lo Titalam – “You shall not ignore the suffering of the other” … do not look the other way and pretend that you don’t see what you really see. As we celebrate OUR freedom this holiday season, let’s remember that there are so many others that are not nearly as fortunate as we are. I am asking all of you, to please be generous this year, please help us keep the doors open to any child, family, or person in need who wants to study with us or just be part of our B’nai Torah family. If you would like to sponsor a child or a family and assist in paying their membership and/or Bat Mitzvah dues, please contact me as soon as possible. Your gift may be acknowledged in various ways (or it can remain anonymous if you wish), and is tax deductible. May G-d always grant you true freedom and peace, the ability to share your blessings and good fortune, and reach out your hand to lift up those less fortunate.

Music of Freedom cantor udi spielman

O

ne of the best things about Pesach is all the songs and prayers that are unique to the Seder. Who doesn’t love a rousing rendition of “Dayenu” or “Ehad Mi Yodea?” The excitement and warmth of sharing the same songs together year after year is what makes everyone feel like they belong. Sometimes these songs are such fun to sing that we forget that they are meant to remind us, L’Dor V’Dor (for every generation), about the fact that we were once slaves, and we were freed, and therefore we need to be mindful of how we treat those amongst us who are still yearning for their “freedom” - perhaps not literal freedom from slavery, but the freedom to express their views, to exercise their rights, to worship and to live without punishment or oppression. There are a few Seder songs which are not quite so well known, but speak to me personally and remind me how lucky we are to live in today’s world. The first, “VeHi SheAmda”, is an ancient prayer which comes before the Pesach meal, one that reflects Jewish history and unfortunately is still relevant today. That song, beautifully performed by many artists and most recently made famous in an epic performance at Caesaria by Yaakov Shweky and Yonatan Razel (written by Yossi Azulay), speaks of Israel’s enemies. As an Israeli, looking around at our neighboring countries, the words of the song “not only one arose and tried to destroy us, rather in every generation they try to destroy us” ring unbearably true. And yet, as a Jew, the second part also gives us hope - “and Hashem saves us from their hands.” This is the best time for Jews ever, in my opinion. First of all because Jews live mostly in freedom, Israel is strong, everyone has a

8

home in Israel. This is also true even from the technology point of view - we have water, electricity, all the modern perks, and life is good. It’s good to be a Jew today. The second is “B’Tzeit Israel MiMitzrayim” or “When Israel went forth from Egypt.” You may recognize this song from the morning Hallel services. Passover is the only time the Hallel is said at night, and is the climax of the Seder, sung before the meal. The melodies used for this song are rousing. This song commemorates Israel’s return to the land G-d gave them; and nature rejoices and trembles at the same time. It celebrates the freedom of the people, the freedom to rule themselves and follow G-d’s commandments without interference from outside forces. It also reminds us that many things are out of our hands; we cannot control the forces of nature. But we can work hard to sow the seeds for a better future for all. The last is “BaShana HaBaa.” For over 2,000 years, Jews sang this song while yearning for a free Jewish state. Now, they can sing it and mean it - next year, in Jerusalem! All are able and welcome to come celebrate this (and all other) holidays in our precious land of Israel. Until then, we invite you all to join us for the Pesach Seder with our B’nai Torah family on the second night of Passover, Tuesday April 11th at 7:30 p.m., conducted by Rabbi David Steinhardt, with a musical presentation by Cantor Paul Goldstein and myself. Seating is limited for the Seder. Reservations offered on a first come, first served basis! See you then.

Tomorrow’s Leaders This feature in our Chai magazine is dedicated to recognizing the extraordinary work of young adults who grew up at B’nai Torah and are now paving the way for a brighter future. In this column, we will learn first-hand about their work when they share what inspires them and how B’nai Torah has served as an influence. One of the most important goals of a synagogue is to teach and reinforce Jewish values within our children, and what great pride there is in seeing these values not only learned, but lived.

“We are part of the last generation to personally know Holocaust survivors and have them as allies in preserving memory.”

David

Estrin

spoke these words aloud to his family and friends during a Passover seder, a time when his grandfather would share his story of survival. As the grandson of four Holocaust survivors, David grew up with a personal imperative to never forget his family’s history. But when his grandfather, a survivor of the Auschwitz and Mauthausen death camps, passed away during his junior year at Duke University, this fact unnerved him.

“How can I preserve my grandfather’s memory in a way that will be relevant and meaningful to the Duke community and future generations?” David returned to Duke feeling compelled to honor the memory of his grandfather and that of the millions who did not have the ability to celebrate life like his grandfather did. Reaching out to friends in “enemy territory” at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), he learned how the school comes together annually to read the names of Holocaust victims for 24 hours on Holocaust Remembrance Day. “We intentionally chose to recognize other genocide victims to remind ourselves that we must do better in our promise of “Never Again.” With this inspiration, David formed a coalition of Duke students and faculty with the goal of transforming one day of school into an annual event for genocide awareness, education, and action on Duke’s campus. In April 2013, these students and faculty read the names of thousands of victims from 6 different genocides for 24 hours. And so Together We Remember (TWR) was born.

Thousands of students listened, all day and through the night, as 50,000 names were read. The #TogetherWeRemember campaign has become an annual tradition at Duke University. Now, David and his peers have set out to build on Duke’s powerful display of community by setting an ambitious goal - to create a global day of remembrance for victims of all genocides through coordinated name readings in communities across the world and on social media. David’s personal mission is to transform the memory of the past into the most powerful tool for building peace in our present and future. By remembering humanity at its worst, we can inspire humanity to be its best.

About #TogetherWeRemember:

Together We Remember is a citizen-led movement to make the promises of “Never Forget” and “Never Again” count for all humanity through globally synchronized activism campaigns. This April, in honor of Genocide Awareness & Prevention Month, we have partnered with over 25 schools and faithbased communities around the world to stage public namereading ceremonies commemorating the lives of genocide and mass atrocity victims. Using the #TogetherWeRemember hashtag, each community with share their unique experience live on social media and contribute to the first ever global digital memorial. With hateful policies towards refugees and minorities on the rise, now is the time to mobilize our communities to fulfill the promises of “Never Forget” and “Never Again.” With each name reading ceremony, our goal is to unite people of different races and religions in solidarity, give voice to victims of atrocities past and present, and compel our leaders to prevent history from repeating itself. Will we add yet another “century of genocide” to the history books or will we be the generation to author it’s final chapter and make it required reading for future generations? Join us on the right side of history. For more information, visit www.togetherweremember.org

e were taken back in time during our B’nai Torah University Yiddish Festival (made possible by the generosity of Joy Binkovitz, in memory of her husband Gene Binkovitzz’l). There were activities, music, dancing, food, and games that taught our families about life in the shtetl. The morning ended with a Shtetl Wedding. Our couple - Gittel (Mikayla Berkowitz) and Moishe (Gabe Turmail) - enjoyed celebrating with all of you!

Yiddish Festiva l

During Purim many people cheer, yell and use noisemakers and completely immerse themselves in the story of Purim. It’s a wonderful thing to witness - and a perfect time for people of all ages to come together and be silly and have a great time! Everyone enjoyed our Purim Extravaganza.

Women’s League of BTC P

assover heralds the arrival of spring and, in Florida, the end of the season. We in Womenʼs League have been very busy. We enjoyed a paid up brunch for our membership; celebrated a wonderful WL Shabbat which was beautifully and ably lead by our members; hosted a Dinner Party with author Brenda Janowitz; enjoyed a wonderful Game Day; held several book club meetings; baked and sold over 10,000 Hamentashen; honored our BT President at a lovely Torah Fund Lunch and had a very successful

Vashtiʼs Banquet and Bazaar. All of these events, which were thoroughly enjoyed, mean that WL will be making significant donations to local food pantries, the Mirochnick Religious School, Rabbi Englanderʼs Scholarship Fund and Dress for Success. We spent time with friends and made new ones. We are looking forward to the WL National Convention this summer where we will celebrate our 100th year. A zissen Pesach to all!

B’nai Torah Men’s Club Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle Project Each year, beginning in 1981, in the weeks leading up to Yom Hashoah, the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs International (FJMC) distributes Yellow Candles. The Candle is modeled the traditional Yahrzeit candle that burns for 24 hours during periods of mourning. The candle’s yellow wax serves to remind us of the yellow arm band which Jews were forced to wear during the Nazi regime. A photo on the candle container shows young people visiting AuschwitzBirkenau concentration camp. This reflects the importance of teaching our youth the lessons of the Holocaust and of remembering the Six Million. This year, we are again distributing Yellow Candles and asking for a minimum of a $18 donation which is used to support scholarships for B’nai Torah youth to participate in the March of the Living. The March of The Living may be the best tool we have to help teach our teenagers the impact that the Shoah had on Jewish society, then and now. This moment affects the rest of their lives. MOL is an expensive trip and may be beyond the means of parents who want to send their children on this monumental experience. 18

Please consider a contribution and supporting the scholarship fund which is under the direction of Rabbi Englander. In your candle boxes is an envelope which can be returned to B’nai Torah c/o Men’s Club. To sponsor the initiative beyond the candle, please contact Art Stark at (708) 502-1770 or [email protected]. Please remember to light your candle on April 24th.

Men’s Club Involvement Opportunities B’nai Torah Men’s Club NEEDS YOU! We are currently inviting new and returning members of the Men’s Club to become more engaged in your B’nai Torah Community. We are looking for program chairs and executive board members. Please contact Larry Faerman, Men’s Club President, at (561) 860-3241 or [email protected].
