Like an endowment, which begins with an initial investment and pays out in perpetuity, a UNC education is an investment that students make in themselves, their families and their communities. You are a vital part of making this possible. Last year 72 percent of first year UNC students received scholarships and grants, and nearly $10 million in UNC Foundation managed funds were awarded across campus. In fact, over the past 12 years, more than $100 million has been made available to support scholarships and programs through gifts and endowments stewarded by the UNC Foundation. What was the return on your investment? Within a year from graduation, 82 percent of our undergraduate students are employed or attending graduate school. A recent economic impact study reported a $3.10 gain in higher future earnings for every $1 invested in a student’s education. And for every dollar spent on a UNC education, society receives a cumulative value of $9.30 in benefits from an active workforce. This is possible because of you and your generosity. Thank you. The education that happens at UNC is different and powerful. We prepare students for more than graduation day; we prepare them for a successful life and career. We are honored to manage your endowed funds in support of UNC, and grateful for the education that your investment makes possible. With deep gratitude,

The Campaign for UNC, launched publicly last March, is now in full swing. Momentum is building in support of scholarships, faculty support, and other university priorities thanks to UNC donors like you. In fact, total Campaign commitments recently surpassed $30 million toward our $45 million Campaign goal. One major Campaign priority, the new Campus Commons, is already under way and will house the student support hub dedicated to helping retain more UNC students successfully through to graduation. In addition to that, the Commons will house a new 600 seat performance hall and prominent art gallery. These physical spaces will be reflective of the exceptional talent that has long been present in our Performing and Visual Arts students. The Commons is set to be complete in the next academic year, and a grand opening event to celebrate the building — and the donors who are making it possible — is in the works for spring semester of 2019. Concrete and steel framing are in place and the profile of the building is beginning to take shape. The cranes you see when you approach campus are visible evidence that momentum is building at UNC. Our future is so bright, and that is in large part because you continue to believe in and support this outstanding institution and the people — students, faculty and staff — who make it the special place that it is. In addition to the exciting progress of the Campaign, the University is also celebrating another year of enrollment growth, welcoming nearly 13,000 new and returning students this fall — the University’s highest enrollment in a decade. It is truly a great time to be a part of the UNC community. Thank you for your continued support of this great place!

“My twin sister and I never really had a stable place until we started college. Being an independent student with no support from family has been hard. I consider the amazing people behind philanthropic giving at UNC as our guardian angels. There are no words to describe how grateful I am to them for the support I’ve received. Because of their generosity, one day I will make a difference in the world.” –SANDRA STOCA ’18, GREELEY – CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Sandra is a senior at UNC majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology and Mexican-American Studies. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in Criminal Justice in fall 2018 and hopes to work with young adults within the criminal justice system.

UNC donors are increasing access and affordability by funding scholarships and supporting programmatic needs, helping to offset the cost of tuition and fees for students. By funding scholarships, they’re also helping ensure Bears succeed through to graduation. In fact, scholarship recipients are 14% more likely to continue their studies uninterrupted through to graduation and in a shorter amount of time than those who do not receive scholarships.
