Course Description This course provides an introduction to the application of physics to study geologic structures, phenomenon, and processes. Geophysics is a large and diverse field, thus only selected methods will be covered. Topsics covered will include: data processing, seismology, earthquakes, tectonophysics, seismic reflection, Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), seismic refraction, gravity, and electrical resistivity. Laboratories are key to understanding course material and will reinforce topics covered in lectures. Because computers are essential tools for modern geophysicists, many class assignments will involve using computers to visualize data and solve geophysical problems. For more details about this course, including the course schedule and grading refer to the course syllabus or email me.

Course Goals The basic goal of the course is for you to become competent at applying principles of mathematics and physics to better understand the Earth. By doing this, I hope to develop your understanding and intuition of Earth's structure and the physics governing many Earth processes. Throughout the course, you will also gain experience with conducting field surveys, processing data, and creating professional quality graphics using computers. Geophysics is a challenging, but fascinating, discipline. You should always feel free to come by to ask questions when you get stuck or are confused.
