Some movies are inspiring. Some have the power to change your life. As for positive psychology, there are also some movies that promote positivity and enrich well-being. Basically, there are four criteria for a movie to be considered as a positive psychology movie. However, it is not expected that the film must meet all four. In addition, some movies can portray more than one character strength. 1. “Portrayal of character displaying at least one of the 24 strengths in the VIA Classification. 2. Depiction of obstacles, adversity, and/or the struggle or conflict the character faces in expressing the strength. 3. A character portrayal that illustrates how to overcome these obstacles and build or maintain the strength. 4. A tine or mood (e., ‘light’ or ‘dark’) in the film that is uplifting or that speaks deeply to the human condition. “ (Niemiec & Wedding, 2013) So, grab your popcorn and start watching away!

5 Comments Ian McDonald November 2, 2017 at 7:50 pm Reply I have always love the movie ‘What Dreams May Come,’ with Robin Williams. It reminds me of so many elements from positive psychology, including positive relationships, meaning, and positive emotions. Also, it is a stark reminder of the dangers of depression and rumination. The character strengths in the movie include courage, loyalty, spirituality, forgiveness and mercy, and more. Thanks for the list and the stimulating links between film and well-being, Chompoo (from MUIC?). Chaup Maak.

anne o'donnell February 11, 2016 at 10:11 am Reply hello that was an interesting half hour, I spent reading about psychology of movies. never thought about movies that way. I know what I like in a movie. now I know why. I like movies that speak of spirituality, kindness, courage, happiness, humanity and humility, appreciation. now I must get a new notebook and make my list, it will help me to keep tuned in. I never watch a film that does not move me some way. just at present, really interested in Oprah’s programmes, super soul sunday, etc. thank you.

Michael February 11, 2016 at 2:35 am Reply On so many levels, I believe Tim Burton’s Big Fish nails all four criterion.
