FALL IN LINE! PROGRAM GUIDE EARLY FALL SEASON

September 7 - October 25, 2015 Registration Opens August 26

GREATER BURLINGTON YMCA Financial assistance is available for all programs

The Greater Burlington YMCA is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a strong community by involving youth, adults and families in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body.

A Letter from Mary Burns, President & CEO

These fall hours resume September 8th

POMERLEAU FAMILY Y

266 College St | 862-9622 (YMCA)

Dear Friends, Sometimes change impacts just one person. Sometimes it is a larger shift that affects an entire community . . . or even a state. At the Y, we see change at all levels and work hard each and every day to be part of change for the better. On an individual level, we see the man who starts a fitness membership, the woman who enrolls in our Y Diabetes Prevention Program or the maturing teen who wants to become a counselor in training at a Y camp. Here, our role is to guide, encourage and support personal goals. When we see change at the community, state or societal level, however, our role is to be more active, stepping forward and providing leadership whenever possible. Quality, accessible preschool and the barriers faced by parents has never been more important. We have been at the forefront on childcare issues for more than thirty years and, currently, we serve in a leadership capacity with the vitally important Building Bright Futures Council. When looking for expertise and experience to direct Vermont’s Blueprint for Health self-management programs, the State turned to our Y to provide oversight and management. Another issue demanding our attention has been the alarming rate of childhood obesity. We worked first through our Eat Well, Play More initiative and were instrumental in bringing about crucial change to the amount of time provided students for exercise each day. However, to turn around the troubling trend of obesity, more needed to be done. Over the past 2 years, the Y has worked hard to implement the Y-USA Healthy Eating Physical Activity (HEPA) standards. Geared toward improving the health of kids, HEPA standards are now in place and bringing healthy changes to all Y programs. On September 25th, the Y will convene leaders from across Vermont to discuss how HEPA standards can be implemented in an increasing number of early care and after school programs. This working meeting will bring Vermont leaders together to design a set of shared commitments that will ensure that Vermont’s children have access to healthy eating and physical activity and the chance for a healthier future. The upcoming HEPA Summit is the latest example of how our Y works to bring positive change to the people of Vermont. For nearly 150 years, we’ve been listening and responding to our community. You can count on the Greater Burlington Y continuing to play this vital role. Warm wishes,

Mary Burns President & CEO

Youth Stroke Clinic

Monthly payment plan available: $165 per month Members / $185 per month Non-Members *

The Stroke School is intended for young swimmers or swimmers new to swim team, who need significant competitive stroke development to be able to participate in swim team. Important competitive swimming skills are introduced over the 13 sessions that will improve success on the swim team. Swimmers will start with streamlining and underwater swimming to increase body control and then each week we will focus on developing one of the four competitive strokes. By the end of the 7-week session, swimmers will be more prepared to join the swim team. Swimmers are expected to attend both sessions each week, as different skills/techniques are covered every day.

Join Dynamo Swim Team for this 5-week stroke and turn clinic. Intended for swimmers with at least 1 season of swim team experience, all swimmers must be able to perform two strokes and swim 50 yards (2 lengths of the pool) continuously to participate. For swimmers who are newer to swim team, we will learn and improve each of the competitive strokes, flip turns, touch turns, dives, and review competitive swimming rules. For more experienced swimmers, advanced technology (underwater tablet and sports video app) is used to analyze swimmers’ strokes and make refinements to improve technique, efficiency, and speed. We will also teach the latest developments in turns for each stroke and individual medleys. Swimmers are not required to attend a certain number of days each week but it is recommended that they make at least 2 practices a week. For more information, please contact Jacsen Callanan, Head Swim Coach at jcallanan@ gbymca.org or 652-8154. Swimmers may be moved to a new group if the swimmer, parents and coaches all agree that the move will be beneficial to the swimmer. Practices for all levels are held in the lap pool. The main season runs October 5th to April 1st. Please Note: In order to compete in swim meets, your swimmer must register for USA Swimming ($67 per calendar year). Swim meets are not mandatory, but highly encouraged. All new Dynamo swimmers will undergo a tryout to determine which level to join or more appropriate swimming programs. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

A SENSE OF MISSION BROUGHT TO LIFE As we considered who to honor at our Annual Meeting this year, one name kept coming up — Howard Center. Both the Y and Howard Center have one sentence mission statements and each specifically references children, adults, families and community. But what is even more telling is how these missions are brought to life each day and, how, when working together, we make real change in the lives of those we serve.

A Changing Landscape Both the Y and Howard Center have been serving the community for more than 140 years. At no time have the challenges facing children and families been as great as they have been in recent years.

Y President & CEO Mary Burns and Director of Preschool Programs Med Edmunds present Howard Center staff with award.

The ground upon which our community rests is experiencing upheaval. Drugs ravage our communities, hunger grows, and families contend with emotional and mental health challenges at a growing rate. These are not problems that one organization can tackle alone.

Our Preschool Partnership A wonderful collaboration of resources by the Y and Howard Center to help our preschool population demonstrates what can be accomplished when two community leaders work together. At the heart of this partnership are therapeutic child care services, with Howard dedicating one interventionist and one clinician to help Y pre-school families. As we increasingly saw a high-need population enrolling in Y preschool programs, we had to expand the nature of our services beyond a traditional approach. Through their therapeutic services, Howard answered the call.

“We live in a richer, more diverse and more accepting community because of Howard Center.”

Mary Burns, Y President and CEO

The story of “Charlie” is just one example of how this Y/Howard Center partnership has helped give many children the lives they deserve. Charlie’s mother had lost custody due to substance abuse problems and his father was incarcerated. Charlie, who was four, lived with his custodial grandparents who provided him with a safe and nurturing home life even though they had very little means. Charlie had challenges controlling his emotions and creating bonds with adults. He often exhibited aggressive, impulsive, and defiant behaviors at home. These behaviors continued when he entered our Y preschool program last October and Howard Center staff was there to help. Howard Center immediately began with direct services for Charlie while at school and enrolled Charlie and his grandmother in Parent Child Interaction Therapy once a week. They also worked with the Y in writing a grant which awarded us funding for a one-on-one aide. With the support of Howard Center, Charlie has made significant strides and is able to successfully regulate his emotions. In a short time, with the care and attention he needed and deserved, he has evolved from an angry, defiant and aggressive little person to a loving, affectionate and caring boy. Although we still have a long road ahead to ensure the well being of Charlie, I am proud to say through our partnership with Howard Center, his future is moving in the right direction. Together, as partners, we have the opportunity to change lives immeasurably. We hope that you will consider joining this partnership by lending your support to the Greater Burlington YMCA’s Annual Campaign. Let’s accomplish more together. gbymca.org
