Financial assistance is granted based on the need demonstrated by household income and/or extenuating circumstances. PRESCRIBE THE Y Since 2008, the YMCA has been working with community health providers to promote the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. Together, we created Prescribe the Y; a free, 12 week wellness program for children ages 6 to 13 and their parents that gets them excited about eating healthy and moving more. Each week, participants spend one hour with a certified personal trainer learning fun new ways to exercise and one hour with a registered dietitian discovering how making healthy choices at mealtimes can be exciting and tasty. Families are invited to participate in two additional weekend activities that get them moving together. Who can participate? Children ages 6 to 13 who have been referred to the program by their primary care provider. How much does it cost? There is no cost to the participants. Where is it offered? Prescribe the Y is offered at both the Nashua and Merrimack YMCA branches. How long is the program? The program is 12 weeks long. Classes meet for 1 hour twice each week To learn more about our class availability, please contact our Director of Healthy Living, Kimberly Adie, at 603.882.2011 or

MERRIMACK YMCA RENOVATIONS Due to the Merrimack YMCA pool project all swim lessons in Sessions E and F will be held at the Nashua Y. We have adjusted our schedule and increased our staff at the Nashua YMCA pool to accommodate more swim lesson and water exercise classes.
EXCITING TIMES AT THE Y These are exciting times for our YMCA! Starting this May we will begin to move forward with a renovation project for the Merrimack Y. We are so excited to start this project and can’t wait until we can serve you better with beautiful new facilities. Here is What is Planned
Timing of the Project
Men’s and Women’s Locker Room – The locker room renovation will consist of a complete overhaul of the shower and bathroom facilities. The newly renovated women’s locker room will now have a more private entrance to the pool area.
The summer is our slowest time of year and we want to have everything operational for you to enjoy next fall when membership attendance in the Merrimack YMCA picks back up after summer vacations, the start of school and cooler temperatures begin. We’ll begin on May 1, with the locker room phase and the pool upgrade will begin in early June.
New Family Locker Room – This space will be similar to our Nashua branch with six private rooms with showers, toilet and changing space. The common area in the locker room will have lockers, sinks, suit spinners and counter space. Because the new locker room will be connected to the pool area it will provide a more private and comfortable space to enter onto the pool deck. Complete Renovation of the Pool Area – The pool renovation will begin with removal of the existing deck and hot tub. We’ll be adding a new filtration and UV disinfect system to more effectively manage water quality and make our pool a healthier experience for our swimmers. A co-ed steam and sauna will be added to the pool deck, new tile, paint, and the inclusion of a new water play element. Additionally, the depth of the pool will be reduced to 3 feet in one third of the pool to allow for better swim instruction for children. Additional Highlights – The project will also consist of an electrical upgrade, a new fieldhouse roof and a renovated entranceway. 16
Overall Affect of the Project These improvements will completely transform the Merrimack branch into a beautiful facility for our staff, members and the community; but it will not be easy. Our pool and primary shower areas will be closed for the summer or a good portion of it, but we will have options available for our members.
We’ll have more information available soon at the Merrimack YMCA and on our website and social media accounts.

NEW SWIM CURRICULUM COMING IN SESSION F Below is an overview of the upcoming swim lesson curriculum stage changes and their descriptions. We’ll have further information about the new curriculum and schedules available on our web site prior to Session F beginning on July 3.
SWIM STARTERS
SWIM BASICS
Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.
A / WATER DISCOVERY
B / WATER EXPLORATION
Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.
In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:
1 / WATER ACCLIMATION 2 / WATER MOVEMENT
3 / WATER STAMINA
Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.
In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.
In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.
4 / STROKE INTRODUCTION
/ STROKE 5 DEVELOPMENT
6 / STROKE MECHANICS
Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.
Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.
In stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.
• Swim, float, swim— sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit • Jump, push, turn, grab
SWIM STROKES
Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

HEALTHY LIVING Group Swim Lessons
Imagine watching your child swim for the first time all by himself. The joy of seeing that accomplishment and confidence is unmatched. In our swim lessons, we’re not just teaching life-saving skills - we’re building confidence. Y lessons are unique due to their focus on preparing the swimmer for all aspects of the water experience and life by teaching skills in these five focus areas: • Personal Safety - Activities that help increase awareness of personal safety issues for both child and parent • Personal Growth - Activities that help child and parent grow in spirit, mind, and body, including character development • Stroke Development - Activities that improve swimming abilities so children can move in the water safely • Water Sports and Games - Activities to develop an appreciation of aquatic activities for a lifetime of fun in the water, including age-appropriate games and songs • Rescue - Activities that build awareness of how to help others in aquatic emergencies
Our Approach
We use a student centered learning style to keep children actively involved in their progression. When students are allowed to figure out what to do on their own, they are actively and creatively participating in their learning. As a result they tend to remember what they learn better and longer.
Research shows that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children aged one to four years. (Source: Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine 2009)
Participants are placed in a level based on age and ability to help meet the developmental needs of each swimmer. Beginner swimmers will wear an IFD (instructional flotation device) to help them swim in the correct body position and improve their arm and leg motions while being able to remain afloat.
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SWIM LESSONS PARENT TIPS • Register for the correct level! Use the program descriptions in this guide, or give us a call. We can talk about your child’s readiness for a particular level OR schedule a free assessment. There is a $10 Transfer fee for children registered for the wrong level. • Get ready! Children with shoulder length hair or longer must tie it back. Swim caps and goggles are strongly encouraged for Ray or Guppy levels and higher. • Don’t forget to bring your towel to the pool deck! • Meet your instructor on the pool deck in the designated drop off zone. Note: your instructor may be in the pool finishing a class. • If you choose to leave the pool deck during lessons, please return 5 minutes prior to the end of class for pick up. Please note: you must remain in the building for the duration of class!
18
Help us keep our pool clean • Please remove your street shoes - they carry dirt, salt and other germs onto the pool deck. • Take a shower - this helps keep our water fresh and balanced! • Stay home - if your child has not been feeling well in the last 24 hours, please stay home! Aquatics staff may ask your child to leave if they are visibly ill. A system credit may be issued for absence for medical reasons, just provide a doctor’s note. • Swim diapers are required for children not fully potty trained.

HEALTHY LIVING Adult Programs (16+) LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA Since 2007, the LIVESTRONG Foundation has been the YMCA’s partner in developing and delivering LIVESTRONG at the YMCA; a free, 12-week group exercise program designed to help people affected by cancer regain their endurance, strength, flexibility and confidence in a supportive and safe environment. The LIVESTRONG program supports the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves on the journey from completing their treatment to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to return to normal life. These small group sessions are facilitated by certified YMCA instructors who assist participants in a variety of physical activity options including cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, balance and flexibility. LIVESTRONG creates a welcoming community in which survivors can develop supportive relationships and improve their quality of life. Who can participate? Any adult 18 years or older who is living with or beyond cancer treatment. How much does it cost? There is no cost for participants. Where is it offered? LIVESTRONG is offered in both the Nashua and Merrimack Branches.
DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM About 1 in 3 adults in the United States is at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. That’s 86 million people! However, only 10% know they are at risk. The Y believes that all people should be able to live life to its fullest, healthiest potential. Our Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes reduce their chances of developing the disease by taking small steps to improve their overall health and well-being. A Certified Lifestyle Coach foster a supportive environment where they work with participants to help them achieve two major goals; lose 5-7% of their bodyweight and gradually increase their physical activity to 150 minutes each week. Classes engage participants in learning wholesome nutrition habits, the benefits of exercise and the life skills to utilize these practices every day.
How long is the program? The program is 12 weeks long. Groups meet twice a week for 75 minutes.
Who can participate? Any adult 18 years or older who is at risk for Type 2 diabetes. You can determine your risk by taking a simple questionnaire at http://www.ymca.net/ diabetes-prevention/ or by talking with your health care provider.
