1.00 THE COLLEGE 1.01: Pub Kamrup College, located at Baihata Chariali, Kamrup- Assam is an institute of general higher education. This College was established in 1972 as a result of decade-long popular desire and relentless effort for such an institute. The College fraternity as well as the locality at large is thankful to the concerned doyens for their able guidance and leadership in the act of initiation of the College. Started with arts stream, there are a total of 48 permanent teaching positions, additionally 25 Guest faculty members being engaged in all the three faculties- Arts, Science and Vocational Courses, and in a few professional courses in the College at present. Baihata Chariali, though semi-urban in nature, is a busy centre of trade, academic activities, and of communication. It is the junction point of two National Highways- 31 and 52. At present the number of regular students in the college is 2900. Well-planned teaching, path-finding counselling, frequent use of ICT tools, upgraded classroom and readily available handouts are the basic methods and amenities that the fundamental teachinglearning process is enriched with. 2.02 Resear ch : The Teaching Fraternity of Pub Kamrup College is earnestly engaged in various forms of Research research works in different fields and areas. 6.00 A dv anc ed LLev ev el Inst ion al Biot ech Hub amr up Co lle Adv dvanc anced evel Instii tut tution ional Biotech Hub,, Pub K Kamr amrup Colle llegge : A Att a ggll anc ancee Biotech Hub is a cluster of facilities for biotech research, training, collaboration & manufacturing biological, pharmaceuticals and food products. It is a centre where different equipments are available related to biological science research. The aim of the biotech hub is to attract young talents to pursue career in biological science. The Institutional Level Biotech Hub, Pub Kamrup College is established in the year 2011 with full financial support from Department of Biotechnology following terms and conditions and accordingly memorandum of agreement was signed between Govt. of India and Pub Kamrup College. Recently, the Hub is upgraded to Advanced Level Institutional Level Biotech Hub by DBT with enhanced financial support for another three years. The Biotech Hub aims to provide facilities for research, development and training in the area of biochemical studies of protein, histochemical and histopathological studies of animal tissues, enzyme biochemistry and separation and identification of different plant constituents. Mreover, the biotech hub has provisions for three types of activities 1.

Hands on training for students, researchers and enthusiastic teachers on basic equipments for biotech research.

Providing facilities for research and development in the field of biochemistry, culture and histochemical and histological studies in animal tissues.

Key points of the Hub: · The Biotech Hub has a well-equipped laboratory facility for research especially in the areas of neurochemistry, phytochemistry & cell and molecular biology. · The Hub regularly organizes different basic and advanced level workshop and training programmes for the benefit of the students. Till date Hub organized more than 20 nos. of such programmes. Among them, one UGC sponsored national seminar, one DBT-CTEP programme and the Brain Awareness Week, 2016 in collaboration with National Brain Research Centre has already been organized in the College. · Besides, the regular activities of the Hub, research findings are published in different journals of international and national repute. Two books are already been published by the Hub. Moreover, it also publishes its e-newsletter twice in a year. The 6th Review Meeting of Biotech Hub Coordinators in NER organized by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India held on 24th – 25th June at Mizoram University, Aizawl, Mizoram, reported Pub Kamrup College as,

“Having been provicialized in the year 2005, this is relatively a younger college offering UG courses in Science. Humanities and Skill-based career oriented subjects. Establishment of a Biotech Hub provided crucial and conspicuous impetus to the teaching programmes of this college. The College was one of the Star Colleges of the DBT scheme, 2017-2018

and was upgraded as a “Model College” by the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) of the Govt. of India. In addition to the conventional UG courses and BVoc courses, this college has been enabled by the Biotech Hub to initiate some unique add-on teaching and programme such as Advance Diploma in Medical Lab Technology, Diploma in Organic Farming & Post Harvest Management. Since its establishment the Hub has organized 11 organized 11 hands-on training workshops, including 2 month-long, summer training courses benefiting 390 participants, it also conducted 14 (1-2-day long) awareness/ outreach seminars, popular talks or workshops for HSS students, UG/ PG students, research scholars and teachers, benefiting more than 1000 participants. The hub faculty delivered 3 invited lectures at two HS Schools (1 selected under the BLiSS scheme) and a college in the neighborhood. The Hub has provided lab facilities for the practical classes under regular UG teaching programmes. Diploma and certificate Courses, 41 UG & 1 PG students, and 4 PhD scholars used the Hub facilities for their project or research work, in fact 29 UG students have completed their project work, now only 12 are continuing to use the facilities. The hub has supported 7 research projects/ activities; 5 students projects have been completed. They have published 3 research papers in peer reviewed journals and communicated one more for publication of the 26 presentations made at various national and international conferences, 7 have been published as full papers in the proceedings of these conferences. The college has also bagged a Twinning project “Exploring the inhibitory effect these conferences. 8.00 PUB KAMRUP COLLEGE LIBRARY: A KNOWLEDGE CENTRE Pub Kamrup College Library is an academic library and inseparable part of Pub Kamrup College, established in 1972, and has been serving its members from its inception. This Library is providing various services to its users and trying to expand the wings of its services. The total area of the Library is 342.74 sq mtr. Co llect ion : Pub Kamrup College Library tries to provide the users with the best sort of qualitative and Collect llection quantitative documents that can be done with the available financial sources and supports. The Library holds 28500+ numbers of books accessioned in the register. Besides its normal book collection the Library holds a number of e–resources. The Library subscribes numbers of national and regional News papers (Daily/ Weekly), Magazines etc. on regular basis. Moreover a number of rare manuscripts and other archival items collected and preserved in its Museum. Journal Section: The Library subscribes 23 print journals of international and national repute, which are displayed in the Journal Section with a separate reading arrangement. Library webportal: The Library webportal can be accessed from the College website i.e. www.pubkamrupcollege.org 9.00 GREEN DIARY (A Diary on Environmental Activities to be maintained compulsorily by the students of Pub Kamrup College)

Environmental study is offered in the college as an integral subject of the university curriculum. What the College innovatively adds is compulsory maintenance of a ‘Green Diary’ since 2012-13 by every student under which each student has to plant atleast three saplings in his/ her homestead and has to maintain the record of nurturing the same, and other environmental activities done by him/ her during the course hours. The ‘Green Diary’ is evaluated annually and in BA/ BSc 4th semester , this diary becomes a partial fulfillment of their project work in environmental studies evaluated for 10 marks assigned in the syllabus. Moreover the college rewards the best student at the end of the academic session for excellence shown in maintaining Green Diary as well as the saplings planted. 19.00 OTHER FACILITIES i. The College provides Insurance benefit under GIS, LICI to the students as per Insurance Clauses for which each student is to pay Rs. 25/- ( Rs. 20/- to be deposited in the GIS, LICI; Rs. 5/- to be deposited in the Student Welfare Fund of the College) at the time of admission. ii. The College Canteen, funded by the PKC Teachers’ Unit provides food and beverage at a nominal rate to the members of the College fraternity. iii. Assamese The department was started in 1972 with the introduction of the Two year Pre-university course. Subsequently, the Two year Degree course was introduced with effect from 1974. It has many objectives such as in depth study of the field of Assamese language, linguistics, literature and culture with special stress on local variations, comparative study of Assamese language and literature with those of Bodo, Rava and other primary ethnic tribes of the region. It also deals with other Indian literature in connection with Assamese Literature. The department has to pursue teaching in Assamese (Modern Indian Language) as a compulsory subject to all the students of H.S. Classes (Arts and Science) and TDC classes (Arts). Besides, it imparts teaching in Advance Assamese in H.S. Classes and Elective Assamese in TDC Classes in addition to the major courses. The Honours (now Major) course at the UG level was introduced in 1975. Now semester system was introduced in the degree courses since 2011. The department enriched with ‘SAHITYA-CHORA’, ‘DEPARTMENTAL RESEARCH COMMITTEE’ invites many renowned scholars, arranges guest lectures, popular talks etc. It publishes one wall-magazine ‘BIKSHAN;’ one hand-written magazine ‘DORIYALI’ every year. The Department completed many study-tours locally as well as in the other parts of India successfully. Department has 10 nos. of Minor research projects completed by the faculty members. The Department has a rich Library with yearly increasing numbers of books (830 nos. till now) and magazines (150 nos. till now). One museum established jointly with the Central Library. The teachers are engaged in teaching-learning, evaluation, research as well as various fields of cocurricular activities. Three of them are Ph. D. holders right now. The teachers have attended and presented papers in various national and international seminars till now. They are also engaged in creative and academic writings. Many articles are published in leading news papers and magazines of Assam. Articles are published in book forms also. Everyone has contributed to the distance learning course of KKSHOU, IDOL etc by writing SLM. The passed out students are engaged in various sectors and services, such as-teaching, journalism, publishing house, banking, police service etc. Department has a plan of opening M.A. in Assamese and CulturalStudies in near-future. Economics Department of Economics was established in 1972. This department offers BA/ B.Sc in Economics and the examination system is based on semester basis. The Economics Department also participates in courses offers by other department and they are Environmental Science and BBA. Presently the department is composed of three parmanent teacher in sanctioned post and one post is vacant. Education The Department of Education Pub Kamrup College started its functioning with the establishment of the college Major course in the subject was introduced in 1984-1985. The present student strength of the department is 911 of which 146 nos are on major and 765 nos are in general course. At present the department has three permanent faculty members. Department has its own psychological laboratory equipped with required 2017-2018

Besides, the department has a departmental library that is enriched with 649 nos of books, one journal, hand written magazines by students and a collection of students project reports. Every year a number of student passed from the college with good marks in the Education subject. English The department of English is one of the few oldest teaching departments of Pub Kamrup College which came into existence along with the college itself. It has three sanctioned teaching posts of which one is lying vacant at present. The department library maintains books, journal and other resources monthly related to the major course. The Navajyoti Bhattacharyya Memorial Trust, PKC is maintained by the department. The English Language & Literature developed society, PKC of the department encourages creative talent of the students via different literacy activities. The department publishes wall magazine ECHO to flourish young minds. Present major course enrollment of the department is 110. Geography : The department was established in the year 1984 with HS class. Undergraduate (degree) general course introduced in 1987 and major course in 1993. The department has four permanent teaching staff and two laboratory bearers. A departmental library for major students with more than 400 books and journals. An alumni Dr Nityananda Deka has been appointed as assistant professor in Gauhati University. History The Department of History was established on 21st August, 1972. Brief outline of the department: · “The Pub Kamrup College Historical Society” was established in the year 1992 with the objectives to popularize and extend historical studies. · As per the request of the Department of History, Mrs. Basanti Devi, Honorable Rajya Sabha MP, sanctioned a grant of Rs. 1 lakh from MP fund to construct a Departmental Library during the financial year 1997-98. Accordingly a Departmental Library was established in the year 1992. At present the stock books of the Library are 540, besides other Journal/ Magazine/ Souvenir. 2017-2018

Chemistry The department was established in the year of 1986. Courses offered: HS Course Degree: Major and General Facilities: Departmental library has 248 books. Internet facility: High speed Internet connection. Laboratories: Two well equipped laboratories, one for major course and the other for general course. Awards and recognition: Senior faculty member of the department, Dr. Nripendra Nath Talukdar owned one patent right – Indian Patent No. 222135 dated 23/07/2008. Title of the patent is “A method for isolation of potassium carbonate from banana plant”. Seminar: The dept. will organize a national seminar on “Harmony with nature in context of Chemistry, environmental issues and challenges.”

Computer Science

The department of computer science was initiated in the year 2005. Now the department offer courses both in HS and Degree level. From the academic session 2016-17, the Major course has also been offered. The department has a well equipped computer laboratory. Mathematics The department was established in the year of 1986. The general course was introduced in the year 1990 and major course was opened in the year 1995. The department has a record of achieving university rank in yearly system since 2011 and after the introduction of semester system a number of students have secured 1st class.

Physics The department was established in the year of 1986. The major course was introduced in the year of 1998. Achievements: 1. Bipul Deka (2008) and Harun Al Rashid (2012) are the recipients of Prof. Hiranya Kr. Bhuyan Gold Medal for securing 1st class 1st position in Physics Major under Gauhati University. 2. An alumni Dr. Biraj Kakati (Post Doc from Imperial College, London) has been appointed as Asst. Professor in Dept. of Energy, Tezpur University in the year 2014. 3. 5 students have cleared IIT JAM so far from the department. 4. 2 alumni cleared NET and 4 cleared GATE. Significance of the dept. 1. All the faculty members are actively engaged in research producing papers in highly reputed journals. 2. The dept. is introducing PG course in Biophysics from the ensuing academic year.

Statistics The department was established in the year of 1992. For intellectual development of the students of the dept. a programme is arranged on every 3rd Saturday of a month where student is allowed to deliberate upon a topic of his choice in which all other students interact. The topic of deliberation may be on literature, politics, general knowledge or any current issue. Everyday a massage on morality is displayed in the dept. so as to promote moral values among the students. The dept. publishes a wall magazine every year in order to provide a platform for the students to write. The departmental library contains sufficient no of books. The department is equipped with sufficient no of calculators for practical purpose. Form this year a prize will be awarded to the statistics (Major) student who gets highest scores in final year examination.

Food Processing and Management Food processing is a branch of food science and is having methods, procedures and techniques which are used to transform raw ingredients into fo od for the consumption of humans. The rising consumerism in the societies of developed and developing countries has contributed to the growth of food processing industries with different techniques and skill. At present in India, Food Processing Industry has been gaining momentum as the consumer’s food industry. As per the report there are about 300 million upper and middle class consumers of processed and packaged food in the country, and another 200 million were likely to be added. 500 food parks are planned all over the country. This will further boost the growth and development of food processing industries and will generate huge employment opportunities for those who have an aptitude towards this work. Moreover now-a-days, industries are invested in north east in large scale. Self-employment opportunities also exist in the form of dynamic delivery networks for those who want to work on their own.
