NEUROPSYCHOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE

Controversies in Cognitive Neuroscience

Sensorimotor Control & Learning An introduction to the behavioral neuroscience of action

Scott Slotnick, Boston College, USA

James Tresilian, University of Warwick, UK

‘James Tresilian has written the most detailed, comprehensive text in motor control and learning – a must for those in the field.’ - Jane Clark, 1.1.5 REPETITIONS OF THE SAME ACTION DO NOT NECESSARILY INVOLVE THE SAME of MOVEMENTS OR FORCES USA Kinesiology Department,REPEATING University Maryland,

‘This book provides the ideal structure and support to develop [a] critical evaluation of cognitive neuroscience.’ - Professor Deborah Hall, NIHR National Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing, UK

It may sometimes seem that repetitions of a particular action are performed in exactly the same way: the outcome is achieved in the same way, so the concept of motor equivalence is not needed. However, subjective impressions of this sort are misleading; it is always the case that different performances in a sequence of repetitions differ from one another, even though the differences may sometimes be quite small. This was recognized early in the study of human motor behavior, as illustrated by the following quotation, dating from 1932:

‘A valuable addition in a field where up-to-date and comprehensive texts suitable for the newcomer are few and far between.’ - Kielan Yarrow, Department of Psychology, City University London, UK Suppose I am making a stroke in a quick game, such as tennis or cricket … When I make the stroke I do not, as a matter of fact, produce something absolutely new, and I never merely repeat something old … I may think that I reproduce exactly a series of textbook movements, but demonstrably I do not.xii

A comprehensive introduction for undergraduate students, Sensorimotor Control and Learning is a landmark book in the growing multidisciplinary area of human movement science that integrates findings from neuroscience, kinesiology and psychology to present a state-of-the-art account of how humans carry out goal-directed actions. One of the earliest empirical studies of this phenomenon was conducted in the 1920s by the Russian physiologist Nicolai Bernstein, and examined repetitive hammering of a chisel by highly skilled blacksmiths.xiii Figure 1.2 shows three consecutive frames of someone hammering; the swing of the hammer involves movement about the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints. Bernstein found that the trajectory of the hammerhead was fairly consistent from one swing to the next, and led to error-free striking of the chisel. However, movements about the individual joints were much less consistent: different strikes in the sequence of repetitions involved different arm movements. Thus, there was motor equivalence: the same outcome (hammer-head trajectory and striking the chisel) was achieved using (slightly) different movements of the limb segments each time.

Features over 600 high-quality illustrations by the author himself. Frame 1

Frame 3

FIGURE 1.2: A sequence of three frames in a cartoon of a person striking a drill or cold chisel. The path of the hammer-head is indicated by a dotted line in frame 3.

It is difficult to provide a complete answer at this point, so we will consider a simpler example that illustrates the basic idea. Imagine a task in which a person is required to press on a pad with the index and middle fingers of their right hand so as to produce a target force level of 30 Newtons (Figure 1.3, panel A).xiv The person could produce 30 Newtons by pressing with a force of 10 Newtons with the index finger and 20 Newtons with the middle finger, or using any other combination that adds up to 30. This is represented graphically in panel B of Figure 1.3. The force exerted by the index finger is plotted on the vertical axis and the force exerted by the middle finger on the

We help you engage your students.

The right text makes all the difference to students. Lecturers wishing to support or stretch them can be confident that our texts undergo rigorous peer review to ensure an interesting, accurate and fluid read, whatever the level. We now also offer value packs and custom publishing for those encouraging wider reading or seeking perfect fit to course.

We offer different ways to read.

We support student success.

We deliver excellent service.

As well as our specialist elearning resources, hundreds of our texts are available as ebooks for students to rent or buy. We digitise more every day, with 75% of our new books available electronically.

For over 10 years we’ve provided students with high quality free study advice at www.palgravestudyskills.com, enabling lecturers to focus on their specialist subjects.

Our dedicated Lecturer Services team take calls, emails and online requests from lecturers wishing to inspect books for their courses. They send over 25,000 out for free every year.

We’re also one of the founders of CourseSmart – a service enabling students to access etextbooks without the need to buy an e-reader.

Many of our titles include online teaching and learning tools at no extra charge. These include essay questions, case studies and extra chapters to further develop students’ academic skills.

New for institutions: Our bulk-buy service offers special discounts for those supplying course texts as part of the student experience.
