Nomination for R. Patrick Bixler Past Experience and Future Vision for SSWG SSWG Board 2017 Application
I’m inspired by the increasing awareness and relevance of conservation social science and I’m encouraged by the Social Science Working Group of the Society for Conservation Biology as a forum to promote this work. Ultimately, I see the SSWG as a critical liason to the broader academic and practitioner conservation community and my interest in the SSWG is rooted in the opportunities to demonstrate the importance social science in solving complex contemporary environmental challenges. I first attended the ICCB in Edmonton in 2010, and most recently presented at the NACCB in Madison in 2016. The 2016 meeting affirmed my belief that SCB was an excellent venue and that I’d found an “intellectual home” at SCB. My research focuses on the social dynamics of landscape-level conservation initiatives. I believe there is incredible potential to advance the social science that can be applied in these contexts (one of my methodologies is social network analysis) as well as the kind of policy relevant findings that the social science work produces in the landscape context (much of my research evaluates the DOI Landscape Conservation Cooperatives and USFS landscape restoration efforts). I envison the SSWG as a platform to discuss, critique, and advance this range of methods and approaches as well as equip interested social scientists with the tools necessary to analyze environmental governance in a broad range of settings. I’m at a stage in my career with the capacity and interest in leadership roles among peers and the SSWG at SCB is an excellent fit with my interests and goals.
