Rational Zero/Root Theorem The Rational Zero Theorem helps find all possible rational zeros (x-intercepts) of a function. If f(x) is a polynomial function with integer coefficients, then all possible rational zeros of f(x) are written in the form

p all factors of the constant term  q all factors of the leading coefficient Example: List all possible rational zeros of each function. 1. f(x) = 2x4 – 3x3 + x2 – 14x + 6 2. f(x) = x3 + 5x2 – 10x – 18

Finding zeros (x-intercepts) of a polynomial function 1. Find one of the rational zeros using Rational Zero Theorem and Synthetic Substitution/Division. (Guess and Check!) 2. Find the remaining zeros by using synthetic substitution/division again or use any method (factor, complete the square, quadratic formula, etc.) to solve the remaining polynomial equation. Example: Find all real zeros of the following functions. 1. f(x) = x3 – 7x2 + 10x + 6 2. f(x) = 2x4 – 13x2 + 8x2 – 13x + 6
