Students can be divided into various categories. See which one(s) you fit into. The Know-It-All: These students think they know everything. They always answer the teacher’s questions, and they never will admit that they’re wrong. The Teacher’s Pet: This kind of student sits in front of the class, pays attention to everything the teacher says, usually raises his/her hand to answer questions, and is always near the teacher. The Hardworking Type: This student takes notes in class, reviews material at home, always does homework, and gets good grades. The Lazy Type: These students are irresponsible. They sometimes fall asleep in class, study little, and hardly ever do homework. Their grades are always bad.

3

The Friendly Type: This student is popular with all the classmates. He/she usually copies homework from other students’ notebooks and always asks for help during tests. The Firefighter: These students are always in a hurry. They usually study for tests or exams the night before, and they do their homework and assignments just before the deadline. The Talker: This student doesn’t stop talking in class and never listens to what the teacher is saying. The Poor Student: This student studies really hard, does homework, but always gets poor grades. The Average Guy: This student pays attention in class, does homework, and studies enough to get passing grades. The Comedian: Every class has one. These students love to laugh at their own jokes—and sometimes others do too.

When you think of an animal that reacts to people, what comes to your mind? Is it a dog, a cat, or a horse? You probably don’t think of an octopus. To most people, the octopus doesn’t look intelligent because of its strange appearance. But octopuses have very large brains, and they are quite smart. For example, an octopus is in an aquarium, and it sees food outside. What happens? It finds a way to reach the food with its long arms. Octopuses are also very strong, and they often remove obstacles that separate them from their meal. Octopuses are generally shy creatures. But they sometimes show some emotions. For example, they respond in a very human way when they come in contact with people. They actually seem friendly. They like to play, and they come to get food. When they are afraid, they swim away. When people make them angry, they squirt ink on them. Under the sea, octopuses change color to hide in their environment. They also change color to show emotion. When the octopus is attacking its prey, it becomes darker. When it is sick or

6

scared, it becomes light and pale. And when it doesn’t get the food it wants, it turns red. It seems mad! 1. Why don’t people think an octopus is smart? 1. Because they live in the sea 3. Because they are not smart

The kiwi fruit is originally from China. The small oval-shaped fruit gets its name from the native bird of New Zealand, the kiwi. Both the fruit and bird have fuzzy brown skin. Inside, the fruit is bright green with tiny black seeds. It tastes like a combination of a strawberry, a melon, and a banana. But the kiwi is much more than an exotic fruit. According to recent studies, the kiwi has the most nutrients of all fruits. It is an excellent source of vitamin C, and it is good for colds and asthma. Studies show that kiwi can help children with breathing problems and coughs. Kiwis also help reduce the fats in one’s blood, and so they help keep the heart healthy. The mangosteen is native to Southeast Asia. On the outside, the fruit is a reddish purple color and has a small green crown near the stem. The fruit is white on the inside. The mangosteen tastes like a combination of strawberry and peach, and it is sweet and sour.

8

The people of Southeast Asia use the mangosteen for medicinal purposes. The skin is used to treat infections, reduce pain, and control fever. A tea made from the rind is also good for stomach problems. Powder from the dried fruit is used for skin diseases. It’s not surprising people in Thailand call it the “Queen of Fruits.” 1. Your heart is about the size of your closed hand, and it weighs only about 280 grams. But it is very strong. It is the engine of the human body. The heart beats over 100,000 beats a day. It never stops pumping blood through your body. The heart brings fresh blood to the rest of the body. The blood contains the food and oxygen that the body needs. The heart also recycles blood and cleans it of waste before it sends it on its journey through the body. You have about 9.5 liters of blood in your body. Your heart pumps about 20,000 liters of blood a day, every day, all your life. The blood travels through tubes called vessels. The total length of blood vessels in the body is 96,000 kilometers. Bangkok’s official name is Krung Thep, which means “The City of Angels” in Thai. Actually, 400 years ago, Bangkok was a small, peaceful village situated on the Chao Phraya River. The village served as a port for ships sailing up the river to Ayutthaya, the old capital of Siam. Bangkok was already well known to European merchants. The ships became larger, and the village grew in size and importance. In 1782, King Rama I moved the capital to Bangkok. Work began on the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. In the 1850s, the city was called the “Venice of the East” because it had many canals. Many of its inhabitants lived in floating houses, and bought and sold products on boats.

14

Today, Bangkok combines tradition and modernity, and it is one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the Asian continent. We don’t realize how much we depend on electricity. How often do we think how wonderful it is that we can have lights when the sun goes down? Or, that we can keep our food cold in the refrigerator? We take all these things for granted—we don’t even think about them. On July 30, 2012, a power outage in northern India left 670 million people without electricity. The extremely hot summer caused the demand for electricity to reach record levels. Also, 27 percent of India’s power is lost because of bad transmission or because it is stolen. Traffic became chaos, and hundreds of electric trains stopped running. Cities like New Delhi turned dark, and people suffered in the terrible heat. Here is what two people said about the blackout. Raj (37) I was driving my car when the blackout happened. The stoplights went out, so cars were blocking the intersections and traffic wasn’t moving. I was waiting in traffic for hours. But, at least, I was cool because I was running the car’s air conditioner. 16

Asha (21) I was working in my family’s restaurant when the electricity went out. Power failures are common, so my family has a generator. It provides power for our refrigerator. So, we were selling food throughout the blackout by the light of candles. It was very romantic. 1. Which is this passage mainly about? 1. The benefits of electricity 3. A power failure in India

2. India 4. Raj and Asha

2. According to the passage, what are the benefits of electricity? 1. It gives us light. 2. It keeps our food cool. 3. It runs TVs 4. Numbers 1 & 2 3. When was there a power outage in India? 1. In 2002 3. On a Tuesday

2. In June 4. In July

4. Where was the power outage? 1. In eastern India 3. In central India

2. In northern India 4. In southern India

5. Why is a lot of India’s electricity lost? 1. Corruption 3. Bad transmission

2. Bad cables 4. Not mentioned in the passage

6. What happened when India had the power outage in July 2012? 1. There were a lot of traffic jams. 2. The cities had no lights. 3. There was no air conditioning so it was very hot. 4. All of the above are true. 7. Whose family continued to sell food during the outage? 1. Raj 2. Asha 3. Raghu 4. Sanjay

Rock and roll became popular with young people in the United States in the early 1950s. At that time, many parents criticized the new music style. They said it was a passing craze and that it wouldn’t last long. But rock and roll spread all over the world, and is still popular everywhere. Rock developed from a variety of popular music styles: blues, rhythm and blues, jazz, gospel, and American country music. The electric guitar, the saxophone of jazz bands, and the melodies and harmonies of popular music contributed to the rock sound. Originally, rock attracted fans of both rhythm and blues and country music. Chuck Berry was the first of the great rock songwriters. His lyrics expressed the feelings and problems of youth. Berry’s first hit record was a country-styled tune titled “Maybelline” (1955). Berry was a major influence on later rock performers. However, the real rock and roll explosion began with Elvis Presley. The new sound of his music combined with his hip-shaking performances quickly made Elvis a superstar. His first major 18

success came with his 1956 recording of “Heartbreak Hotel.” But, in fact, the song that is considered the first true rock and roll song is “That’s All Right.” Radio stations in Memphis, Tennessee, played the song over and over. (From: New World Student Book 3, Unit 7, page 55, Reading)

One of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had was in Morocco. It was a trip to the desert. A group of us set off from Marrakesh in a minibus and headed to Merzuga, a tiny town on the edge of the Sahara Desert. The countryside on the way was very unusual. There were dry gray cliffs, and below them were lots of green palm trees. After traveling for two days, we finally got to Merzuga. Before sunset, we boarded our camels and rode into the desert over the dunes. After two hours, we reached the camp. It was dark, cold, and I was starving. The guide brought a lamb dish, and the five of us shared from a plate eating with our hands. After dinner, everyone went to sleep in tents, except me. I’ve always wanted to have the experience of sleeping in the desert, under the stars. But I didn’t realize it could get so cold at night. During the day, the temperatures can reach 50° Celsius, but at night, they fall to 4°

The cities of London and Paris are historical rivals. But today, the two are closer than ever. This is because the high-speed Eurostar train connects London to Paris in only two and a quarter hours. It takes less time to cross the Channel than to go from London to Newcastle in the north of England. Nowadays, London is a bigger city and has a larger population than Paris. In fact, the population of Paris is getting smaller. Both cities work to ensure a better quality of life: they discourage the use of cars, and they try to make the city greener. Compared to Paris, London has more skyscrapers, and it seems more modern and dynamic. The City of Light is more conservative and maintains the traditional French way of life. The capital’s many tiny bakeries still sell freshly-baked baguettes and croissants, and people still fill the famous sidewalk cafés. Paris boasts of its cuisine and fashion. Paris is still considered more glamorous than London, and it is the center of the top designer brands. London has a more informal food culture with lots 22

of ethnic restaurants and bars. Paris has nine three-star Michelin restaurants, the height of excellence. London has only one. As for entertainment, young people say that London is livelier and has more options than Paris. The British writer Samuel Johnson said: “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” The Parisians say: “When a man is tired of London, he comes to Paris for a good meal.” 1. The blue whale is the biggest living animal in the world. It grows up to 30 meters long, and the largest can weigh more than 180 metric tons. The tongue of a blue whale alone can weigh as much as an elephant, and its heart can be the size of a small car. A baby blue whale weighs up to 2.7 metric tons when it is born, and gains 91 kilograms every day for its first year. But these enormous animals can swim at a fast speed of 32 kilometers an hour. During certain times of the year, an adult whale eats about 3.6 metric tons of krill a day. The whale swims slowly through the water with its mouth open, and thousands of tiny fish and plankton swim into it. But the whale can’t swallow anything larger than a shrimp. Whales are mammals, and so they cannot stay under water for too long. They need to come to the surface to breathe after 10 to 20 minutes. Blue whales usually dive around 100 meters, but can reach a depth of 500 meters. When they come to the surface, they blow a wet stream 12 to 15 meters up in the air. 24

It all started in a garage with an investment of $2,000. Today the company is worth more than 240 billion dollars. What was it? In 1998, two Stanford University students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, developed Google, a search site that helps Internet users find information easily. Compared to other sites, Google was faster, and it has become one of the most popular search engines on the Internet. Every day Google receives more than one billion searches from people around the globe in 181 countries and in 146 languages. That’s about 500 million people using Google daily. The verb “to google” is now part of everyday language in English. It means to search for information on the Internet. Google’s work culture is different from most other companies. The workplace is unconventional and informal. People dress casually, and they can even bring their pets to work. The idea is to create a relaxed family atmosphere. Most of the employees are very young. Google has one of the youngest workforces in the world.

26

Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Workers are encouraged to spend 20 percent of their time thinking about ways to make the company better. That’s how Google Maps, Google Earth, and Gmail developed. But what about the founders? Well, Larry Page is still the company’s CEO, and Sergey Brin is head of special projects. They lead fairly normal lives, but the only difference is that they’re over 20 billion dollars richer. 1. Where did Google start? 1. At Stanford University 3. In a dorm room

One of the basic rules for sharing the same space is respect for other people’s things. We cannot use what is not ours without the owner’s approval. Read what Ethan says about it. I have a five-year-old sister. Her name is Emily, and she always touches my things. I went to return a video game that was overdue from the library, and I couldn’t find it anywhere. Then, I found my sister playing it on my game console. She turned it off and ran to my mom. I screamed at her. So my mom told me to calm down and in the future to put my things away in the closet. Emily comes into my room while I’m at school. I bought a guitar a few weeks ago—it’s my favorite possession. When I got back from school I saw her playing with it. She was hitting the strings really hard and screaming at the top of her voice. I shouted, “It’s not yours!” So she ran off to my mom crying. Mom told me not to shout at Emily. 28

Once I hit her because she broke one of my toy models. She ran and called 911 and said I was abusing her. When the cops came, my mom explained it was a mistake, and she didn’t let me say a word of the truth. When I was talking to my mom about it, she said that Emily was just trying to fix the toy. If I ever have kids, the first thing I’m going to teach them is not to touch what isn’t theirs.

Hi, Mom and Dad, How are you all? I miss you all a lot. It’s the longest I’ve ever been away from home! Life here is very different from Monterrey. But studying here will be a great experience for me, and so far I’m enjoying it very much. The food in the university dining hall is OK, but it doesn’t have much flavor. I miss mom’s cooking. On the weekend, I’m going to London, so I’ll have lunch in a Mexican restaurant. There’s lots of spicy Indian food here, but it’s not the same. Oxford University is very impressive, and it is one of the oldest in Europe. It started in 1254. I’m having a little trouble, not with the classes, but with understanding what the professors are saying. I studied American English in Mexico, and I’m not used to the British accent yet. The town of Oxford is charming and has a pleasant atmosphere. The countryside is really beautiful and green—so different from Monterrey. The trouble is the weather—it’s so changeable: it’ll be cloudy in the morning, the sun will come out around midday, and maybe it’ll rain in the afternoon. 33

My room is small but it’s comfortable and warm. My roommate, Igor, is from Russia, so we speak English all the time. We’re planning to travel together during the holidays. We’ll probably go to Wales or maybe to Scotland. I’m looking forward to that. Love, Fernando 1. Who wrote the letter? 1. Mom 3. Igor

Before you arrive home, you can call the microwave on your smartphone, and you can tell it to start cooking your dinner. You can also fill your bathtub and set the temperature of the water. You arrive at your doorstep, and the door will open for you. The house will recognize you and will greet you by your name. When you enter the living room, the lights will come on, and your favorite music will start playing. The refrigerator will remind you that you need to get more soda from the supermarket. No, this is not science fiction. Smart houses are a reality. New technologies make it possible for users to control almost anything that is electronic from smartphones or tablets. Parents can check on their kids and help with their homework. A working mother can check on her baby’s first steps at the day-care center from her office desk. The latest videos of vacations, births, and other family events can be shared with friend and relatives. The “family room” is being replaced by a “media room.” In fact, the home theater entertainment system with digital TV/blu-ray combo and surround sound speakers has become very popular.
