Grade 9 – Collection 3 – “The Bonds Between Us” Connection: Throughout texts 1 and 5, the people are growing through the actions they take on to help themselves/others.

“When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine” by Jhumpa Lahiri 1170L, p. 103 This story explores the choices facing immigrants in resolving cultural conflicts and the growing pains of young people as they grow through personal connections.

Public Service Announcement from the Corporation for National and Community Service p. 151

This Public Service Announcement from the Corporation for National and Community Service uses visuals, music, and text to communicate a message about the significance and value of helping others.

“Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect” by Frans de Waal 1160L, p.123

The Bonds Between Us Essential Question:

In this text, de Waal uses technical language and examples to discuss how humans are influenced by interactions with other people and animals.

How do we as individuals depend on the well-being of our society? Connection: In both texts, people are creating relationships with either their friends, or people they interact with and learn from.

Connection: These texts connect over the shared understanding that it is valuable to help others. In Text 4 the neighbor acknowledges that perhaps they are doing the character some good by allowing the cat to stay outside while in text 5 they volunteer in their community.

“At Dusk” by Natasha Trethewey p. 147

In this poem, the cat is faced with different choices to make. With these choices, there are different states of well-being at stake among the characters.

Connection: Both texts deal with personal connections. In text 1, it’s the way people evolve due to external situations, where in text 2 it is almost as if people are allowing themselves to grow when they interact with other people to learn appropriate ways to behave.

“With Friends Like These…” by Dorothy Rowe 1070L, p. 141

Connection: These texts connect in the sense of emotional support. In text 3, the author is being literal in what people feel they need from their friends, while in text 4 the cat remaining outside is an emotional support for the neighbor who doesn’t have anyone.

This text allows the exploration of the topic of friendship through the ideas and insights of a noted psychologist.
