March 13, 2015 Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), Since the 2015-2016 Program of Studies was published, there was a change in the prerequisites for the Business Education Department entitled “Word Processing.” There is no longer a prerequisite for this course. In order to select the proper course, some guidance is stated below: "Introduction to Word Processing" is a course designed to teach students how to touch type, that is, to type without looking at the keys. If a student is using the "hunt and peck" method or a two-finger approach to typing, then "Introduction to Word Processing" is the course to take. In addition, if a student wants to improve his/her typing skill, so he/she can complete assignments more quickly and with better accuracy, then I would also suggest the student enroll in "Introduction to Word Processing. In addition to learning the keyboard and numeric keypad, students are taught basic "real world" word processing applications including formatting business and personal letters, setting tabs, creating tables, converting text to tables and tables to text, as well as the tools to format an MLA style report, insert inline citations and generate a Works Cited bibliography. In the "Word Processing" course, students will learn to use Microsoft's Word 2010 software program. Through hands-on simulations, students will learn how to manipulate and edit Word documents, apply styles and themes, work with templates, create templates format and create resumes and cover letters, generate a table of content, modify and apply smart art tools, Use Outline View, work in various page layouts and views, track changes, create sections, integrate with PowerPoint, Excel and Access, and learn mail merge. This course should be taken by anyone who presently uses Word but is not familiar with the applications and tools Word has to offer. If you would like to make an adjustment to your course selection, please email the appropriate Ridge counselor prior to April 2, 2015 at 2:30 pm.

Sincerely,

Michael Fackelman Michael Fackelman Supervisor of Visual & Performing Arts, 21st Century Learning Skills
