RISK FACTORS FOR ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION: A HOSPITALBASED CASE CONTROL STUDY Deshpande J. D.* and Dixit J. V.**
ABSTRACT The prevalence of coronary heart disease has increased tremendously over last few decades both in developed as well as developing countries. It has also become a major health concern for developing countries like India. In the present study the risk factors for acute myocardial infarction and the association and strength of association of these risk factors in relation to acute myocardial infarction was studied at Government Medical College Nanded and one private hospital at Nanded. Study design Hospital based case control study. Sample size: 272 cases of acute myocardial infarction and 272 controls. Statistical analysis: Association of the risk factors under study was assessed by applying chi square test. To assess the strength of association the odds ratio and 95 percent confidence interval of odds ratio was calculated. For all these statistical analysis Epi info version 5 computer package was used. Maximum numbers of cases of A.M.I. were in the age group of 51 to 70 years (59.55%). Upper socio-economic status is 2 significantly associated with occurrence of A.M.I. (χ =30.5, P
