Today Jesus teaches us how to come to his heavenly wedding feast, not by crowding forward but by seeking a place after everyone else. Humility, the confidence to be oneself, is a lifetime’s work. This strategy, if used, allows all to find their best place before God. Jesus himself did this at the Last Supper, doing the slave’s job of washing the apostles’ feet. “The heart of a sensible person will reflect on parables, an attentive ear is the sage’s dream.” Are we, are you, listening to the Lord today? Society of St. Vincent de Paul Today we hear Jesus say to us, “...when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” As God bestowed dignity on us, so should we shower others with dignity. If we wish God to invite us to the divine banquet, then we also extend ourselves to all others regardless of social, economic, religious, or cultural status. Humility is recognizing that we are gifted, enriched, and nourished by God so that we can then reach out to others in the same way. St. Vincent shared the conviction that however charitable we may be, if we are not humble, we do not have real charity. Consider answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We welcome new members and can be reached at 234-6535, ext. 103. We meet on the third Tuesday of every month in the Conference room of the Parish Center. Join us and learn to let God work in you.

From Fr. Chris N.: The common theme of today’s readings is the need for true humility and the blessedness of generous sharing. Today’s gospel warns us against all forms of pride and self-glorification. At the same time, humility is presented as a means of opening our heart, our minds and our hands to the poor, needy, disadvantaged and marginalized of society. Humility is both the cause and the result of social awareness and altruism. For Jesus, the daily human needs of the poor are the personal responsibility of every authentic, humble believer. In the Gospel this weekend Jesus’ words concerning the seating of guests at a wedding banquet prompt us to honor those whom others ignore. If we are generous and just in our dealings with those in need, we can be confident of the Lord’s blessings. On the other hand, if we act out of pride and selfishness we can be sure that our efforts will come to nothing. The first reading from Ben Sirach gives us a lesson in humility. Sirach is a book of moral instruction and wise sayings written by a devout Jewish sage about 175 years before the time of Jesus. It is part of the wisdom literature of the Hebrew Scriptures. He writes, "Conduct your affairs in humility," Sira writes. "The more you humble yourselves, the greater you are." He instructs us to be honest about ourselves and to become conscious of our limitations, acknowledging our true position before God as creatures and sinners. Jesus teaches us that everything we have is a gift from God, therefore, I have no reason to boast. I must not use these God-given gifts to elevate myself above others. Hence, humility means the proper understanding of our own worth. It requires us not to overestimate our worth, nor to underestimate it either. The humility that the gospel urges upon us has nothing to do with a self-deprecation that leaves a person without proper self-esteem. We must simply admit the truth about ourselves: we do not know everything, we do not do everything right, we are all imperfect and sinners. Nevertheless, we also recognize that we are made in the image and likeness of God and that we are called to help build the kingdom of God with our God-given gifts. We are of value, not because of those gifts, but because we are loved by God as His children redeemed by the precious blood of His son Jesus. Even in a more radical way, Jesus is inviting us to associate with the so-called "lower classes" of society -- even the outcasts. Jesus invites us to change our social patterns in such a way that we connect with the homeless, the handicapped, the elderly, and the impoverished -- the "street people" of the world.

God’s Blessings Always, Fr. Chris N

Our Lord Needs a Few Good People: to attend the Pastoral Formation Institute (PFI). PFI is basically a two year commitment and is an educational process of human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral growth. To complete the process, the adult learner brings a lived experience to the PFI faithbased classroom community. Here the adult Catholic learns how to be Church, how to live Church and how to bring Church to the broader community through ministry and discipleship. If you have any interest, please contact Fr. Chris N. CALLING: All Moms, Dads and Grandparents who ATTEND THE 11:00AM SUNDAY MASS !!!

I would like to form a FAMILY MASS COMMITTEE that will help plan and prepare for Family Mass once or twice a month at the 11:00am Mass. The committee would explore ways to get the children more engaged at Mass. If you are interested, please speak to Father Chris. From Fr.
