Today’s Gospel Reflection First Reading: Is 45:1, 4-6 * Psalm: Ps 96:1, 3-5, 7-10 * Second Reading: 1 Thes 1:1-5b * Gospel: Mt 22:15-21

POWER STRUGGLE Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday’s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus’ response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power—the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. You may have a candle lit for 7 days, or 42 days. Your intentions will be posted on the wall and included in the Mass. Call the parish office for details. You may also write your prayer intentions in the “Book of Intentions” in the church.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

Dear Parishioners and friends, October 22 is WORLD MISSION SUNDAY! Every year, this Sunday in October celebrates and encourages our efforts to proclaim the Gospel in both word and deed. North America was “mission territory” in the early 1800s when Pauline Jaricot gathered small groups in her family’s mill in Lyon, France to offer prayers and sacrificial giving to support missionary work in North America and China. Her effort grew to become the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which continues to promote the global mission of the Church. By the early 1920s, the United States was no longer a primary focus of missionary activity. But there was concern that Catholics in the United States, who focused primarily on their local Church, lacked an understanding of the Church’s global and mission outreach. In 1926, Church leaders designated the second to last Sunday in October as World Mission Sunday to broaden the understanding of the Church’s global mission. Every parish is asked to raise awareness of the worldwide evangelizing efforts of the Church. Parishes also take up a collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith to be used for the missions. Worldwide efforts like World Mission Sunday support more than 1,000 missionary dioceses. In the 1960s, the Second Vatican Council, echoing the missionary credo found in the words of the Gospel of Matthew (28:18), emphasized that the Church is missionary by nature, and every baptized Catholic is called to missionary work through good works and setting a good example. The new understanding of ‘mission’ is focused on the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and his proclamation of the Kingdom of God. St. Paul maintained that the Kingdom of God is peace, justice, joy and life in the Holy Spirit. If we understand ‘mission’ as this spreading of the Kingdom of God, then we work for peace and justice. We celebrate life as gift from God lived joyfully in the Spirit. - International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews

There will be second collections in all Masses today for the Propagation of the Faith. Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the Missions grow. Each one of us has the responsibility to continue the Mission of Christ. We have the responsibility to help in the propagation of the Faith through the Missions. PLEASE, GIVE GENEROUSLY. “The World Mission Sunday is an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give; as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the missions of the world.” - Pope Saint John Paul II, Redemptoris Missio 81.

STEWARDSHIP A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER for OCTOBER

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT

Gracious and Loving God, We give you thanks for this time of year; a time of transformation that reveals the awe-inspiring gift of your creation. Teach us how to be good stewards of all the gifts you have given us; and show us how we may share those gifts generously, especially with those most in need of your loving care. Give us the strength to be good stewards of the Gospel, to love others as we love ourselves, and to follow in your Son’s footsteps, until we find our way home to you. We pray this through your Son, Jesus Christ, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of October 21/22, 2017 In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed a profound teaching by Jesus on stewardship. What belongs to Caesar? What belongs to God? Christian stewards recognize that everything they have belongs to God. God created them, and God has claims on every part of their existence. They also realize that the sovereign is an institution whose nature and purpose is to promote the common good and protect the welfare of its citizenry. As long as it accomplishes this mission while treating every single person with deep respect, justice and compassion, it merits the steward’s support and cooperation. Christian stewards know what belongs to the Lord, and they are better citizens when they live their lives according to his Gospel. - International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews

On Saturday, November 4th, the Diocese of San Diego is hosting an EXPLORER DAY for those men who are interested in exploring a possible vocation to the priesthood. The day will be held at St. Francis Center on the campus of the University of San Diego from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If living a life of service for Christ and the people of God is attractive to you, take advantage of the opportunity to attend this upcoming Explorer Day. Pick up an application at your parish office or call Fr. Lauro Minimoat St. Francis Center at (858) 4908385. For more information send email to: Fr. Lauro Minimo at [email protected]. Pre-registration is required . THE LORD’S WIDOWS GROUP IS EXPANDING AND IS NOW CALLED THE ST. MICHAEL GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP.

The Lord’s Widows Group has been meeting once a month for almost two years. We begin each meeting by Praying the Rosary for our departed loved ones. It is very comforting to be with people who understand what you are going through and have found it very helpful to share with others. Some of us have lost a loved one many years ago and some of us just recently. We help one another by being there for each other. No matter who we are, we all believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior and we believe in the resurrection of the dead and life in the world to come. Our faith is most important to us and has been our salvation in this process. Since we have been helped by the group and since we are the only grief support group at St. Michael’s, we see a need to expand our group by inviting anyone who has lost a loved one, be it husband, wife, child, parent, sibling, close friend, etc. All are welcome to join us on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 9:00am in the Collier Center. We also have found that it is necessary to keep ourselves busy and so we have started the Corporal Works of Mercy project. Each month we feature certain items to donate to needy people in San Diego. It is very healing to spend time helping others in need and in the process help ourselves. Please join us and see what we are all about!

Refleciones del Evangelio

Comunidad Latina

“Be a Part of the Dream — Together We Build” CAMPAIGN PRAYER Heavenly Father, we ask for Your divine guidance as we prayerfully move toward the realization of our new parish center. Show us the way to meet the needs of our growing parish community. Lead us to committing ourselves with a spirit of true sacrifice. For it is always by sacrifice that we show our love of You and our neighbor. Lead us to wisely use our time, talents and treasures as we move forward with Your holy vision. Inspire us all out of Your generous love, to be equally generous for strengthening Your Church and our parish. Spirit of God, we praise You and adore You. We pray that Your Spirit will empower us to work strongly for the realization of our dream so that future generations will harvest the fruits of our commitments and sacrifice. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen. Mary Mother of God, pray for us. St. Joseph the Builder, pray for us. St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us.

Amen. Maria Madre de Dios, ruega por nosotros. San Jose Constructor, ruega por nosotros. San Miguel, Arcangel, ruega por nosotros. Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and the snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the Divine Power of God - cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
