Blackboard, Whiteboard and Smart board

Makalah Natural Approach ILMU KE PGRI AN

1. Definition of Blackboard

Essay and Essay Outlining "Courage at cost"

A blackboard (UK English) or chalkboard (US English; also blackboard) is a reusable writing surface on which text or drawings are made with sticks ofcalcium sulphate or calcium carbonate, known, when used for this purpose, as chalk. Blackboards were originally made of smooth, thin sheets of black or dark grey slate stone. Modern versions are often green because the color is considered easier on the eyes. Advantages of chalkboard: a) Chalk requires no special care b) Chalk is an order of magnitude cheaper than whiteboard markers for a comparable amount of writing. c) It is easier to draw lines of different weights and thicknesses with chalk. d) Chalk has a mild smell e) Chalk writing often provides better contrast than whiteboard markers. f) Chalk can be easily erased. g) Chalk can be easily removed from most clothing Disadvantages of blackboard a) The chalkboard carries with it a "temporariness". Material put on the board cannot be saved or made permanent b) Being fixed, chalkboards can put restrictions on the use of classroom space and classroom activities as learners need to be placed where they can see the board. c) can bother some educators and students with allergies 2. Definition of Whiteboard A whiteboard (also known by the terms marker board, dry-erase board, drywipe board, pen-board, and the misnomer grease board) is a name for any glossy, usually white surface for nonpermanent markings. o These are the advantages of whiteboard 1. Unlike blackboards (or green boards), whiteboards really look better when used in schools and offices. 2. What you have written from a whiteboard can be easily erased. Just do not forget to use the prescribed dry erase whiteboard marker. It's also easy to wipe the writings off even with a tissue or a cloth. (Giveaway tip: You can also pour some alcohol on the tissue or cloth to wipe off with even cleaner results.) 3. A dry erase marker board would really make an excellent visual aid. One can even use different colors of markers for better visibility and attention. These dry-erase markers are refillable, by the way. 4. This marker board can also be used as an excellent screen if you want to do a formal presentation via projector. o These are disadvantages of whiteboard: a) Odor Dry – erase markers are soft and silent, but they can cause vapors in a classroom and contribute to indoor pollutants. Smaller children who are more vulnerable or those with chemical sensitivies may experience throat or eye irritation after prolonged exposure. b) Glare Whiteboard’s polished white finish can create a ghostly glare, making it difficult for visually impaired students to discern what is written c) Expense Because dry – erase markers are easy to use and colorful, students and teachers both tend to write more on a whiteboard than on a chalkboard. Therefore, markers wear out more quickly and must be replaced more often. 3. Definition of Smart Board or E-board Hasil gambar untuk gambar smartboard

Today, technology is transforming classrooms, enabling students to sit at their desks and stay connected with the teacher, as well as the entire class, with interactive whiteboards. The Smart Board (stylized as "SMART Board") is a line of interactive whiteboards produced by the Calgary, Alberta-based company Smart Technologies. (wikipedia) In straightforward terms, a smart board is an interactive white board. It can be connected to one or more laptops, PCs, tablets, or other electronic devices. They are extremely useful in a classroom because they can engage students, provide interactive opportunities that a traditional white board, black board or flip chart can't, and can also develop students' computer skills along with their English skills. Smart boards also have touch screen technology so you do not actually need a computer to access the basic functionality. Types of Smart Board Series There are many types, models, and series of smartboard. The features and functions of all of them are fairly similar. There are two main types: 1. 600 series The 600 series of SMART interactive whiteboard can be used with either a pen or a finger and comes with SMART Technologies’ Touch Recognition feature. Each 600 series SMART Board interactive whiteboard is supplied with SMART Notebook software. 2. 800 series The newest generation of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard will be available to students and educators in North America on November 29, 2010 and globally on January 30, 2011. These are models of smart board 800 series: · The smart board 880 interactive whiteboard · The smart board 880i interactive white board , · Thewidescreen 885i · the widescreen 885ix. Ø comparison between 600 and 800 series SMART Boards. The key features of each board from the 600 board through to the 885ix board are outlined in a handy comparison chart. S M A R T

Characteristic of smart board :

1. Projector lamp It has a projector lamp called the smart UX60. 2. Projector- enable network The IP network is alway enabled. So, inside this interactive whiteboard room it helps to send and recieve commands to and from the web server or from client. 3. Installation is very simple Since the projector is mounted immediatelyabove this interactive whiteboard, it is very easy to accommodate inside the classroom and no need for complicated wearing and mounting. 4. Very good image quality Brilliant color technology is used by this projector to produce high levels of brightness and contrast. All files include videos and data and also lesson files looks very bright from every direction inside this interactive room. 5. Simultaneous touch experience Maximum four students at a time can utilize mouse function. The students can erase, manipulate and can also move the object from the interactive board surface. to perform this operations special tools are not required. 6. Pen lock option With pen tray hold the pen color button until the light is flashed. The lockable pen option soon will lock the interactive board in pen mode. Then we can use any device to act as a pen. 7. Touch gesture If more than one student are working with the interactive board each student can use their palm for erasing. To perform gestures on objects, students can use one or two fingers. 8. Highly secured It has high secured feature. It is very difficult for thieves. It has no buttons and also the projector head, base and boom are attached. So, it won’t work if it is removed from the extended control panel. How To Operate The Media 1. Turn on your computer and turn on the projector. Make sure all connections are secure. Your smart board will activate automatically. Log onto windows using the keyboard. If all connections are secured and you have logged in properly, the ready light will turn to green, indicating that the smart board is ready to use. The ready light is located near the bottom – right portion of the board. 2. You must align or orient your smartboard if you want it to work properly. Most teachers understand the “why” but struggle with the “how”. Here are some ideas on how you can use Smart Boards. 1. Use it as a tool for note-taking. Students can come and write important points on the board. Alternately, you can appoint a student to type out notes on the computer while you talk, so that the other students can view and take them down. 2. Brainstorming in the classroom can be fun with a Smart Board. You can not only put together text/ ideas but also images, diagrams or videos. 3. Classroom games can be played with ease on the board. Board games in particular can be played on the board itself. 4. All forms of media– videos, photographs, graphs, maps, illustrations, games, etc. – can be used on the board, making it incredibly dynamic in nature. This expands the range of content that you can use for teaching or presenting new information. THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

Ø The strength : • Saving time and money by streamlining workflow and eliminating paper dependency • Providing a single source for access to pertinent data for effective decisionmaking • Easily finding information through advanced search capabilities • Enhancing communications with all stakeholders • can be used by children of all ages • can be used by children with disabilites • promotes interactive learning • helps teachers enhance there lessons by using interactive multi-media • also develop students' computer skills along with their English skills. • can make your lessons more varied, and can give students a more active role in the lesson. • They can, if used correctly, provide a greater range of resources to your students, and develop their computer and internet skills. • With the right additional equipment they also provide the opportunity to access the internet quickly. This is extremely useful for things such as online English dictionaries or image searches. • makes the classroom more student-centered • The boards are clean and attractive tools. There is no messy chalk dust or other by-product, which can limit use. While the board can be used with regular dry erase markers, it is more likely to be used with the electronic marking feature, which employs either stylus or finger, and thus requires no cleanup. Ø The weaknesses : • Very expensive • teachers aren't getting training on how to use the smartboards • can distract students • it needs electricity in the class • The first drawback to SMART Boards is inaccessibility. Virtually all of the classrooms at my year two field placement had SMART Boards. However, at my initial field placement, the school was removing the few SMART Boards that they had. Consequently, it could be very difficult for students to transition from a classroom that is interactive and that uses a SMART Board to a traditional learning environment. • Other disadvantages for using SMART Boards are that SMART Boards can breakdown, the students can become dependent upon the technology if it is overused, SMART Boards are occasionally used inappropriately and it is difficult for students in larger classes to participate equally in SMART activities. Ultimately, it is important to be knowledgeable, prepared and flexible when using technology.
