“City National helps keep my financial life in tune.” So much of my life is always shifting; a different city, a different piece of music, a different ensemble. I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. City National shares my passion and is instrumental in helping me bring classical music to audiences all over the world. They enjoy being a part of what I do and love. That is the essence of a successful relationship. City National is The way up® for me.

Greetings from the Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer Thank you for joining us at the Opera House for Christopher Wheeldon’s magical Cinderella©. This ballet, a modern take on the timeless tale, includes whimsical special effects, puppetry, and projections. Even after watching it many times, I still find moments of this ballet that take my breath away. One secret of this Cinderella© is that it’s as enjoyable to dance as it is to watch. It’s always a pleasure to have the talented choreographer Christopher Wheeldon working in our studios with our dancers — and this production involves our entire Company. It’s wonderful to see the dancers in different contexts, stretching themselves in dramatic and comedic roles. I hope you’ll enjoy this production as much as we do.

I also hope you’ll join us again for our 2017–18 Season. Our 85th Repertory Season will launch in January with the return of our acclaimed The Sleeping Beauty, after a ten-year absence. We’ll revisit our smash hit of this season, Frankenstein, and will dance brilliant works by Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine, Benjamin Millepied, Justin Peck, Val Caniparoli, and more in three glorious triple-bill programs. I’ve invited The National Ballet of Canada to bring their production of John Neumeier’s Nijinsky. It’s a deeply moving work and you’ll love getting to know this company’s talented dancers. The centerpiece of our 2018 Repertory Season is Unbound: A Festival of New Works. The scale of this festival is unprecedented: 12 new works by 12 talented, international choreographers. These dancemakers represent a wide variety of viewpoints, styles, and backgrounds. In creating this festival, which will take place over 17 performances (four distinct programs of three new works each) from April 20 to May 6, 2018, we are bringing the future of ballet to San Francisco. On behalf of the entire Company, thank you for joining us this season. Sincerely,

Helgi Tomasson Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer

History of San Francisco Ballet A tradition of innovation flows through the history of San Francisco Ballet. Long recognized for pushing boundaries in dance, SF Ballet has always built upon strong classical roots, while continually exploring and redefining where the art form is headed. The San Francisco Opera Ballet was founded in 1933, primarily to prepare dancers to appear in lavish opera productions. In 1942, the ballet officially separated from the opera and was renamed San Francisco Ballet. From the late 1930s to the 1970s, SF Ballet was led by three brothers: Willam, Lew, and Harold Christensen. The young company was the first to create full-length American productions of Swan Lake (1940) and Nutcracker (1944). SF Ballet performed on the East Coast for the first time in 1956, at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. The following year, the Company toured 11 Asian nations, the first performances of an American ballet company in Asia. The tour was so successful that it was followed by a four-month tour of Latin America in 1958 and a three-month tour of the Middle East in 1959.

Top, l-r: SF Ballet founders Lew, Willam, and Harold Christensen in the 1940s; Bottom: Members of San Francisco Ballet under the Golden Gate Bridge on the eve of the historic 1957 tour to Asia.

The 1970s were tumultuous. The Company started an annual season in the War Memorial Opera House in 1972, and Michael Smuin was appointed associate artistic director in 1973. But in 1974, SF Ballet faced bankruptcy. Dancers rallied community support with an extraordinary grassroots effort called “Save Our Ballet,” successfully bringing the Company back from the brink. SF Ballet then developed the first long-range plan for an American dance company and, 18 months later, was financially stable. Smuin’s The Tempest was the first ballet broadcast live from the War Memorial Opera House and was nominated for three Emmy Awards in 1981 (Costume Designer Willa Kim won). In 1984, Smuin received an Emmy for Choreography for the Great Performances: Dance in America national broadcast of A Song for Dead Warriors.

Helgi Tomasson’s arrival as artistic director in 1985 began a new era at SF Ballet. Like Lew Christensen, Tomasson had been a leading dancer for George Balanchine, one of the most prominent choreographers of the 20th century. Tomasson has choreographed extensively for the Company and has staged acclaimed full-length productions of Swan Lake (1988, 2009); The Sleeping Beauty (1990); Romeo & Juliet (1994); Giselle (1999); and a new Nutcracker (2004). He has also expanded the repertory to include new works by choreographers William Forsythe, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, Christopher Wheeldon, Val Caniparoli, and many others. In 1991, SF Ballet performed in New York City for the first time in 26 years. The New York Times proclaimed, “Mr. Tomasson has accomplished the unprecedented: He has pulled a so-called regional company into the national ranks, and he has done so by honing the dancers into a classical style of astonishing verve and purity. SF Ballet under Helgi Tomasson’s leadership is one of the spectacular success stories of the arts in America.” Under Tomasson, SF Ballet has also undertaken ambitious programming. In May 1995, SF Ballet hosted 12 international ballet companies for UNited We Dance: An International Festival, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter in the War Memorial Opera House. In 2008, the New Works Festival, organized to mark the Company’s 75th anniversary, introduced 10 premieres by 10 choreographers. In recent years, the Company’s touring programs have also become increasingly extensive, with international engagements in Paris, London, Moscow, Hamburg, Athens, Shanghai, and Beijing. San Francisco Ballet School, also established in 1933, has grown into a preeminent training center under Tomasson and associate director Patrick Armand. The School attracts students from around the world, training approximately 350 annually. In addition to filling the ranks of SF Ballet, graduates have joined distinguished ballet companies throughout the world.

For Your Information NEW! BEVERAGES ALLOWED IN THE AUDITORIUM SF Ballet, SF Opera, and SF Symphony are experimenting during the first six months of 2017 with allowing audiences to enjoy beverages in the auditorium. Many other venues across the country have adopted similar policies, so that you don’t have to choose between enjoying a drink and all the other things you might want to do during intermission. You may bring drinks purchased in the venue into the auditorium, as long as they are in the approved compostable cup with a lid, which will be available at all bars in both the War Memorial Opera House and Davies Symphony Hall. All three companies will meet regularly to monitor this pilot effort and will decide, following the six-month trial period, whether or not to continue the program. We want your feedback, so look for a survey in your postperformance email and let us know what you think. PURCHASING TICKETS You can order online at sfballet.org or call Ticket Services at 415 865 2000, Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm. On performance dates, phones are open from 10 am until the performance begins. The SF Ballet Box Office in the Opera House is open only on performance dates. During the Repertory Season, we’re open Tuesday through Friday, from noon through the first intermission, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am through the first intermission. During the hour prior to curtain, the Box Office will only be able to handle business for the upcoming performance. Groups of 10 or more can save up to 30 percent. For information, visit sfballet.org/ groups or call 415 865 6785. Gift certificates are available online at sfballet.org or by calling 415 865 2000. THE SHOP AT SF BALLET is open one hour before each performance, during intermissions, and after weekend matinees, even if you're not attending the performance itself (visit the Box Office for a special pass).

ACCESSIBILITY SF Ballet is committed to providing easy access for all of our patrons. Please contact our Ticket Services department at 415 865 2000 prior to the performance with questions and so that we can ensure your comfort. Assistive listening devices (Sennheiser model infrared sound amplification headsets) are available at both coat check locations in the Main Lobby. A major credit card or driver’s license is required for deposit.

You will be asked to stand until a break in the action, which might be at intermission. Audio/visual recordings of any kind of the performance are strictly forbidden. San Francisco Ballet Leadership HELGI TOMASSON

GLENN MCCOY

Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer

Executive Director

Helgi Tomasson, one of the supreme classical dancers of his generation, has led San Francisco Ballet for 32 years. Born in Iceland, he danced with Harkness Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and New York City Ballet, where he ( Chris Hardy) distinguished himself as a dancer of technical purity, musicality, and intelligence. Tomasson assumed leadership of SF Ballet in 1985. Under his guidance, SF Ballet has developed into a Company widely recognized as one of the finest in the world. Tomasson has balanced devotion to the classics with an emphasis on new work, cultivating frequent collaborations and commissions with renowned choreographers such as William Forsythe, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, and Mark Morris, among others. Tomasson has choreographed more than 50 works for the Company, including full-length productions of Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo & Juliet (taped for Lincoln Center at the Movies), Giselle, and Nutcracker (taped for PBS’s Great Performances). He conceptualized the 1995 UNited We Dance festival, in which SF Ballet hosted 12 international companies; and the 2008 New Works Festival, which included 10 world premieres by 10 acclaimed choreographers. Tomasson has also connected SF Ballet to the world, through co-commissions with American Ballet Theatre, The Royal Ballet, and Dutch National Ballet; and major tours to Paris, London, New York City, China, and his native Iceland. ©

FRANKENSTEIN

Feb 13 – Feb 24 | Included in the Principal 8 & 5 Series

Balanchine turned up the volume on classical ballet, making the movement bigger, faster, and more energetic, and New York City Ballet alums Benjamin Millepied and Justin Peck have put their own stamp on this aesthetic. Balanchine’s moonlit Serenade is followed by Millepied’s propulsive and expanded The Chairman Dances, and Peck’s Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes, an athletic, high-energy interpretation of Aaron Copland’s iconic music.

Feb 15 – Feb 25 | Included in the Principal 8 & 3 Series

Three works, all created for SF Ballet, and all delightfully distinct. Helgi Tomasson’s neoclassical On a Theme of Paganini, set to Rachmaninov’s brilliant music, shimmers with charm and romance. For Ibsen’s House, Val Caniparoli created a dramatic, emotional ballet from five of the Nordic playwright’s works. Included in the program will be a select world premiere from our 2017 Repertory Season.

Mar 06 – Mar 11 | Included in the Principal 8 & 3 Series

The Creature is back! The sold-out hit of 2017, Liam Scarlett’s Frankenstein bowed to roaring ovations. The Mercury News wrote "[Frankenstein] offers luscious performances, relentless drama, and spectacular set design and lighting.” Inspired by Mary Shelley's Gothic masterpiece and set to a score by Lowell Liebermann, this powerful ballet will change your perception of what it means to be human.

THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA Nijinsky: A Ballet by John Neumeier

Mar 20 – Mar 25 | Included in the Principal 8 & 5 Series

Our All-Robbins program celebrates the centennial of Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein with four iconic works: Fancy Free, a high-spirited story of three sailors on shore leave in New York City; the otherworldly, pensive Opus 19/The Dreamer; the electrifying and brilliantly ferocious The Cage; and Other Dances, a gorgeous, lyrical duet set to Chopin’s piano music.

Apr 03 – Apr 08 | Included in the Principal 8 & 5 Series

The National Ballet of Canada returns to the Bay Area for the first time in a decade with Nijinsky, John Neumeier’s imaginative tribute to the legendary dancer-choreographer. In this kaleidoscopic biography, pivotal moments surface through the lens of Nijinsky’s psychosis, illuminated by the iconic characters he danced. "Stamina, guts and passion are what define this company right now." —National Post

SERGEI PROKOFIEV Composer

VAMP

Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953), a Russian composer, pianist and conductor, is considered one of the major composers of the 20th century. Born in Ukraine, Prokofiev wrote his first piano composition at age 5, began his first opera at 9 and, at age 23, won the Rubinstein prize playing his first piano concerto. He graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music in 1909. Among his best known works are operas (The Love for Three Oranges, The Fiery Angel, and War and Peace), ballets (Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella), and Peter and the Wolf (a monologue with orchestral accompaniment). In total, Prokofiev completed seven operas, seven symphonies, eight ballets, five piano concertos, two violin concertos, a cello concerto, a symphony concerto for cello and orchestra and nine piano sonatas. In 1957, his Seventh Symphony was posthumously awarded a Lenin Prize. CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON Choreographer

Christopher Wheeldon is an internationally known, awardwinning choreographer. Born in Yeovil, England, Wheeldon trained at The Royal Ballet School and joined The Royal Ballet in 1991. He served as NYCB’s first-ever artist in residence for a year before being named NYCB’s first resident choreographer in July 2001. Wheeldon has created nine ballets for San Francisco Ballet, as well as works for NYCB, The Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Pennsylvania Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, and The National Ballet of Canada. In 2007, Wheeldon founded Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company and was appointed an Associate Artist for Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London. INSTANT EXPERT

TO THE POINTE Just as the correct fit of Cinderella’s shoe is essential to the fairy tale, the correct fit of a pointe shoe is critical to a ballet dancer. These iconic pink shoes (painted gold for Cinderella©) are handmade. Layers of cotton-backed satin are stitched to a leather sole, and a fabric insole covers a shank made of tough leatherboard or plastic. The toe box is stiffened with layers of glue, and the platform (the only part in contact with the floor when the dancer is on full pointe) is flattened for better balance. Most professional dancers order from one shoemaker for years. The maker will customize the shoes, from the shape and tilt of the toe box and vamp (which covers the top of the toes) to the shank’s strength and length. Dancers sew ribbons and elastic on and often customize shoes even more by pounding the toe box to soften it or cutting the satin off the platform for better traction. All this for shoes that may only last one performance! At any given time, SF Ballet’s shoe room holds nearly 5,000 pairs of pointe shoes.

NATASHA KATZ Lighting Design

Natasha Katz is a Tony Award–winning lighting designer for Broadway, ballet, opera, and film. Born in New York City, Katz studied at Oberlin College. She has collaborated with Christopher Wheeldon on his ballets The Winter’s Tale, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Tryst for The Royal Ballet; Continuum© for San Francisco Ballet; and Carnival of the Animals and An American in Paris for New York City Ballet. She has also designed lighting for American Ballet Theatre and The National Ballet of Canada. Katz has designed lighting for more than 50 Broadway productions, winning Tony Awards for her work on Long Day’s Journey Into Night, An American in Paris, The Glass Menagerie, Once, The Coast of Utopia: Salvage, and Aida. Her lighting designs are featured at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, the Rio casino in Las Vegas, and Niketown in New York City and London. BASIL TWIST

Tree and Carriage Sequence Direction/Design

Cinderella© earned puppeteer Basil Twist, a San Francisco native, a 2013 Isadora Duncan Dance Award (Izzie) for Outstanding Achievement in Visual Design. Twist’s other hometown production credits include the award-winning Symphonie Fantastique (Zeum), The Araneidae Show (Theatre of Yugen), Dogugaeshi (Berkeley Rep), The Long Christmas Ride Home (Magic Theatre), and Purple Haze with The Kronos Quartet at City Hall. Highlights of Twist’s other work include Petrushka, Behind the Lid, Arias with a Twist, and Sister’s Follies. In dance, he has collaborated with Christopher Wheeldon on The Winter’s Tale for The Royal Ballet and The Nutcracker for The Joffrey Ballet. He has also contributed to Darkness and Light with Pilobolus; Wonderboy with The Joe Goode Dance Company; Underground River with Jane Comfort & Company; and Dorothy and the Prince of Oz, a Tulsa Ballet and BalletMet collaboration. His maverick Rite of Spring, a ballet without dancers, premiered in 2013 at UNC Chapel Hill and was performed in 2014 at Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival. Currently represented on Broadway in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Twist has also worked on Oh, Hello; The Addams Family, for which he won a Drama Desk

Award; and The Pee-wee Herman Show. Twist recently received a MacArthur genius grant. Other recognitions include an Obie, five UNIMA Awards, two Bessie Awards, a New York Innovative Theatre Award, a Henry Hewes Award, a Guggenheim, a USA Artists fellowship, and a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. Twist serves as Artistic Director of HERE ’s Dream Music Puppetry Program in NYC. DANIEL BRODIE Projection Designer

Daniel Brodie is a video projection designer and multimedia artist. Born in Las Vegas, Brodie graduated with a degree in theater and media design from Arizona State University. He has collaborated with Christopher Wheeldon on The Winter’s Tale and with puppeteer Basil Twist on Behind the Lid, Arias with a Twist, and The Rite of Spring. Brodie’s Broadway credits include Motown the Musical and Disney’s Aladdin. He has created video designs for Kanye West, Mariah Carey, and the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Brodie has worked as a guest lecturer at Yale University and New York University. In 2011, he was awarded the United States Institute of Theatre Technology’s Rising Star Award. JACQUELIN BARRETT

Assistant to the Choreographer

Jacquelin Barrett is a ballet teacher, coach, ballet mistress, and stager who has also been assistant to Christopher Wheeldon since 2009. Barrett trained at The Royal Ballet School and danced soloist and principal roles with London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet). She has worked as a ballet mistress for Central School of Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre, and English National Ballet. In demand as a teacher internationally, she taught at The Royal Ballet School from 1997 to 2008 and has worked as a guest teacher at Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, The National Ballet of Canada, and in Australia and Japan. CINDERELLA© CONTINUED PROGRAM NOTES

by Cheryl A. Ossola

The heart of the old, the spirit of the new. Christopher Wheeldon’s Cinderella© tells the same uplifting story people have heard for centuries, but this is a ballet full of innovations and modern twists. A co-production of San Francisco Ballet and Dutch National Ballet, Cinderella© premiered in Amsterdam in 2012, then flew across the Atlantic to make its US premiere in San Francisco in 2013. “Each of Christopher’s works has something unique,” says Helgi Tomasson, SF Ballet’s artistic director and principal choreographer. Wheeldon is an acclaimed dancemaker, in demand at companies worldwide. Formerly a resident choreographer at New York City Ballet and now an artistic associate at The Royal Ballet, he caused a sensation on Broadway with the musical An American in Paris. And he’s a frequent presence at SF Ballet, with 13 works in the repertory. Cinderella© was his eighth commission and first full-length story ballet for the Company. Tomasson’s words about originality ring true in Wheeldon’s Cinderella©. You’ll find no fairy godmother, no pumpkin coach, no clock striking midnight — but you won’t miss them a bit when a tree comes alive and “dances,” or when Cinderella shows backbone and her Prince’s charm runs deep. And you won’t miss them when the dancing and the storytelling come from Christopher Wheeldon. “What I wanted to do,” the choreographer says, “was echo the darkness in the music by taking some of the themes from the Brothers Grimm version rather than the [Charles] Perrault version,” with its fairy godmother and pumpkin coach. “The Grimm version is more serious and a bit darker, centered around nature and the spirit of mother.” That’s where he got the idea of a tree that grows from the grave of Cinderella’s mother, “the deliverer of all things magic, which I think is more poetic [than a fairy godmother] and quite beautiful,” he says. “There are comic moments because there’s comedy written into the music, but it’s a more serious Cinderella in a way.” That music, written by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev in 1940 but shelved for several years during World War II, made its first appearance when Bolshoi Ballet premiered Cinderella in November 1945, choreographed by Rostislav Zakharov. “I love it,” says Music Director and Principal Conductor Martin West about the score. “It’s immediately striking, and astonishingly clever the way the themes come around, the way he could create an atmosphere out of something very simple.” Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, West says, “came from the heart, but Cinderella is more cerebral. It takes longer to get into, but once you’ve lived with it, it starts to eat at you. Some of it is so beautiful.” Beautiful enough, in fact, that Cinderella’s music is the main reason Principal Dancer Maria Kochetkova had wanted to dance this ballet. Struchkova in the title role) and dreamed of dancing it someday. “Not because of the pas de deux or unusual costumes or story that I wanted to act,” Kochetkova says. “It was because of the music.” Her favorite parts change with her mood, she says. “Sometimes it’s the waltz; sometimes I really like the first-act music.” Even though the story is a fairy tale, she says, “the score makes it so realistic and dramatic.”

As a ballet, Cinderella has a lengthy pedigree. It debuted in St. Petersburg in 1893, choreographed by Marius Petipa with Enrico Cecchetti and Lev Ivanov, famous “fathers” of classical ballet. (This was when ballerina Pierina Legnani first whipped out an unheard-of 32 consecutive fouettés — pirouettes in which one leg repeatedly extends and whips in, foot to knee — a feat that is now a standard of virtuosity.) The West had to wait until 1938 to see a Cinderella, and when the chance came it was Michel Fokine’s one-act version in London, which added the role of Cinderella’s cat. In 1948, Sir Frederick Ashton made a Cinderella for Sadler’s Wells Ballet in London, and it was the first English full-length ballet done in the tradition of the 19thcentury classics. He based it on the Perrault fairy tale and used the Prokofiev score. Ashton revived an old tradition by casting men — including himself — as the Ugly Sisters. Margot Fonteyn, his choice for Cinderella, was injured during rehearsals, and so it was Moira Shearer of The Red Shoes fame who created the title role.

Ashton’s Cinderella was followed by an onslaught of productions. Among them, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Peter Anastos made Cinderella for American Ballet Theatre in 1984; like Fokine’s, it included Cinderella’s Cat. Baryshnikov had never danced this ballet in Russia; it was the music that enticed him to create his own. Rudolf Nureyev, in his 1986 production

INSTANT EXPERT

WHAT’S A PRINCIPAL CHARACTER DANCER? There’s a special category of dancer who performs mature character roles, and they’re called principal character dancers. These members of San Francisco Ballet, now serving as ballet masters and teachers, draw on their years of dancing to give compelling performances in such roles as mothers and teachers, nurses and friars, witches and mad scientists. Though at times you’ll see Company members who are still dancing full-time perform these dramatic or comic characters (for example, Principal Dancer Sofiane Sylve plays Lady Capulet, Juliet’s mother in Helgi Tomasson’s Romeo & Juliet), most of the time principal character dancers take on such roles. These senior members of the artistic staff have the grace, movement vocabulary, stage presence, and superior acting chops and mime skills needed to bring their characters to life.

for Paris Opera Ballet, set the ballet in Hollywood and gave the beleaguered Cinderella an alcoholic father. And in SF Ballet Choreographer in Residence Yuri Possokhov’s 2006 production for Bolshoi Ballet, the Storyteller (Prokofiev himself) replaces the Fairy Godmother. Christopher Wheeldon’s Cinderella© isn’t the first to find a home at SF Ballet — that honor goes to a production by Lew Christensen and Michael Smuin, then co-artistic directors, in 1973. Wheeldon’s version, with all the technological advantages of the 21st century, began percolating when he and Tomasson discussed ideas for a new full-length ballet to be co-produced with Dutch National Ballet. As Wheeldon soon found, creating a production on two continents simultaneously isn’t easy. “It was my crazy idea,” he says. “I said, ‘I’ll do some of it here and some of it there, and we’ll make it work.’” Several Dutch National Ballet principal dancers rehearsed in San Francisco for a few weeks in 2012, and several from SF Ballet went to Amsterdam; that way the choreography could be created on both companies at once. “It promotes a nice cultural exchange,” says Wheeldon, “but it has its pluses and minuses. One dancer hasn’t necessarily followed it through from beginning to end. On the other hand, more people have had the benefit of being created on.” In creating a world for his characters to inhabit, Wheeldon assembled an artistic team with imaginations as big as his own. Step one was brainstorming with playwright and librettist Craig Lucas, who describes the early stages of Cinderella© as “a constant back and forth, teasing out a shared understanding of what is exciting about the story. [We wanted] to burrow into possibilities we had never seen explored.” These included a substitute for the Fairy Godmother — an essential element, according to Wheeldon. “We all toy with the idea that loved ones are always watching over us in some way,” he says. He and Lucas settled on the tree that grows when Cinderella cries over her mother’s grave — in effect, a character, “a living thing that could embrace the action,” says Lucas — and four Fates who offer guidance and protection.

Wheeldon also knew he wanted his Cinderella to be in charge of her destiny. Yes, she’s a servant in her own home, but “she knows she doesn’t have to be there forever,” he says. “It is good versus evil; it is that if you’re a good person things can come out right. But it’s not saying if you’re meek or subservient you’ll be rewarded.” The concept of an empowered Cinderella suits Kochetkova just fine, “because I feel like you do have to fight for things in life, but by being a good person, not by pushing others out of the way. I feel like she’s a really strong character.” Cinderella gains some of her strength from the four Spirits (seasonal fairies in Prokofiev’s score), who, while teaching her to dance, imbue her with such gifts as elegance and lightness of being. The steps she learns form the basis of her solo at the Prince’s ball. Cinderella’s Prince, too, is more complex than in traditional versions — more than “just a handsome mug,” Wheeldon says. He and Lucas gave the Prince a childhood — and a servant who happens to be his best friend. In a classic mistaken-identity plot device, the Prince masquerades as the servant, so “the Prince sees who Cinderella really is,” says Lucas. “She isn’t reacting to someone’s status; she is treating him [respectfully] as she would the lowliest person, something he isn’t used to experiencing. He has no idea that Cinderella is also hiding her identity.” But what’s a story without a setting? Wheeldon chose Julian Crouch to do the sets and costumes because of his “very fantastical approach to design. He always seems to embrace the darker side of the fairy tales he’s done,” he says. Crouch had designed for theater, opera, and musicals, but ballet was a new world for him. And he discovered that “it needs to be fluid. I think this Cinderella© is more fluid than the traditional,” he says. “It moves scene to scene more rapidly; it has more locations. So for me it’s been an exercise in suggestion, really — I’ve had to suggest a location and support the atmosphere and then move fluidly to the next one.” As for the costumes, he says there’s “a looseness about them. Fairy tales are ‘once upon a time,’ not ‘once upon 1870.’” The period is the 1800s “but spread over the century,” he says. PROGRAM 08

CINDERELLA© CONTINUED “Each character is allowed to drift a bit in time. I’d say it’s timeless; in that sense it has a fluidity as well.” Crouch describes his design method as “like a purifying process.” Set designs come before those for costumes, and he starts by collecting images that spark his imagination. “You collect these things and they become the beginning of a conversation, with yourself, but also with the people you’re collaborating with.” The images lead to ideas, which then develop into a design concept. One of Crouch’s collaborators is award-winning puppeteer Basil Twist, whose primary role with Cinderella© was to make the tree be more than scenery — a character that would, in effect, dance. The mechanics aren’t that difficult, he says; it’s just like moving any piece of scenery. But then “you get to the moment when you’re choreographing for the tree, to the music, and you’re saying, ‘Now it makes this shape; now it’s that shape.’ You feel the tree as you would a dancer. That’s when it comes alive.” Twist has done many productions involving dance and music, and his work spans continents. (His Obie Award– winning Symphonie Fantastique, an underwater puppetry and art extravaganza set to Hector Berlioz’ score, ran for two years and caught Wheeldon’s eye.) But of everything Basil has created, what holds particular meaning for him is the tree in Cinderella©. “This is maybe corny, but as a child I always used to go to [SF Ballet’s] Nutcracker,” he says. “And the tree growing onstage — it’s one of the reasons I work in the theater. I so loved that moment.” So he’s thrilled, he says, to be “doing my own tree on the same stage.” The tree’s foliage and movements are enhanced by projections — not in a major way, Couch says, but to “support the atmosphere, like the lighting does.” And lighting is where Natasha Katz comes in. To her, this ballet is “about transitions. Cinderella has moments of revelation and transition, and they’re all tapered to a place of joy.” What that means in terms of lighting, she says, is that “you can’t have light without darkness. The lighting really is the chiaroscuro of emotion. We’re going to have darkness when it’s emotionally dark, and we’re going to have joy when we’re supposed to have joy. And that is light and fluffy and beautiful and fun.” What’s most exciting about this Cinderella , says Katz, “is that it’s completely new, that we all started from the same place together.” She wasn’t one of those little girls who dreamed of being Cinderella — but if she had been, she says, “this is the one I would have dreamed about.” ©

STORY OF CINDERELLA© ACT I SCENE 1: GARDEN ESTATE Young Cinderella is playing outside with her mother and father when suddenly her mother becomes ill. In terrifying rapidity, her mother is taken from her and Four Fates are left to watch over Cinderella, who weeps over her mother’s grave. A tree sprouts from her tears. SCENE 2: ROYAL PALACE The young Prince Guillaume and his friend Benjamin (the valet’s son) are pursued by Madame Mansard (the prince’s dancing mistress). They dash through the hallways of the palace, causing havoc. Suddenly King Albert and Queen Charlotte appear, stiff and formal. The king is appalled at Guillaume’s lack of discipline, but the queen is more forgiving. The boys dash off again into the garden. SCENE 3: THE GRAVE Cinderella, now older, brings flowers to her mother’s grave. Two girls, Clementine and Edwina, appear, followed by their mother Hortensia, on the arm of Cinderella’s father. Cinderella realizes that this is to be her new family. Hortensia hands Clementine a bouquet to present to Cinderella who, horrified on behalf of her dead mother, discards it. Her father insists that she take the flowers, but Cinderella hurls them at Hortensia’s feet. Cinderella’s father will not tolerate this behavior. Fueled by pride, Cinderella assumes a subservient attitude towards the women, thus sealing her own fate.

SCENE 4: ROYAL PALACE GALLERY King Albert attempts to explain to his grown son the political connections to be gained by marrying a titled princess. Queen Charlotte writes invitations to an upcoming ball, where the prince will meet these prospective brides. Guillaume is distracted by Benjamin, who imitates the many foreign princesses in the portraits hanging on the walls. King Albert becomes enraged at his son’s lack of responsibility to his future kingdom, but Guillaume can’t believe his parents would force him into a loveless marriage. Albert insists the invitations be delivered in person by the prince himself. Guillaume and Benjamin hatch a plan to trade places, pretending to be one another. SCENE 5: CINDERELLA’S KITCHEN Cinderella stoically serves her family breakfast. The briefest sign of tenderness towards Cinderella from her father is frowned upon by Hortensia. Edwina follows closely in her mother’s footsteps, gaining favors from her. Clementine, the sweeter stepsister, is bullied into following suit. A poor beggar arrives at the door seeking food and warmth. Taking pity, Cinderella brings him into the kitchen, but Hortensia, horrified, casts him out again. “The Prince” (Benjamin) appears at the door. He has discovered the poor beggar outside and insists that Hortensia provide him with food and warmth. Hortensia feigns concern and orders Cinderella to help the beggar. “The Prince” has come to deliver invitations to a ball where he shall choose his bride. Left alone with Cinderella, the beggar (Prince Guillaume in disguise) sees true kindness in this girl. The two pretend to be at the ball, laughing and dancing. SCENE 6: THE NIGHT OF THE BALL Cinderella is cleaning the kitchen when the rest of her family appears, dressed for the ball. There was an invitation for Cinderella, but Hortensia throws it into the fire, and her family departs for the palace without Cinderella. The Fates, who have continued to watch over Cinderella, present her with her invitation and lead her to her mother’s grave. SCENE 7: THE GRAVE From the tree, spirits of Lightness, Fluidity, Generosity, and Mystery appear to teach Cinderella the steps she will need for the ball. Embraced by the branches, Cinderella is transformed and the Fates send her on her way to the ball — cryptically warning her to keep an eye on the time.

ACT II SCENE 1: THE PALACE BALLROOM The ball is underway when Cinderella’s family arrives. The king and queen witness the rather tipsy arrival of Prince Guillaume and Benjamin, neither in correct attire for such a formal occasion. Cinderella’s stepsisters still believe Benjamin to be the prince, giving the two young men another chance for deception. Guillaume finds he is uninterested in any of the eligible ladies, stepsisters included. A magical atmosphere fills the ballroom as a mysterious masked girl arrives. Guillaume is immediately drawn to her. Cinderella, recognizing Guillaume as the urchin, turns to flee, but is gently guided back to him by the Fates. The couple waltz together. Seeing the interest the prince shows in this mysterious beauty, Hortensia takes to the bottle, humiliating herself. Benjamin dances with Clementine, whom he likes. Guillaume and Cinderella dance, falling deeper in love. When Hortensia rips off Cinderella’s mask, it is time for her to flee. In the chaos caused by her sudden departure, she leaves behind one golden shoe. Guillaume vows to marry her. INTERMISSION

ACT III SCENE 1: IN THE KINGDOM Benjamin and Guillaume search for Cinderella, trying the shoe on every female foot they can find. SCENE 2: CINDERELLA’S KITCHEN Cinderella awakens, and with the help of the Fates, remembers her astonishing night at the palace. Hiding the other golden shoe on the mantelpiece, she resigns herself to her daily chores. Clementine tells Cinderella of the boy she met, and then Edwina turns suspicious when she spies Cinderella dancing steps from the ball. Hortensia viciously attacks Cinderella, and her father must step in. Unannounced, Benjamin and Guillaume arrive, exhausted from trying the shoe on so many feet. When the shoe does not fit either of the stepsisters, Hortensia throws it into the fire. Cinderella comes forward with the matching shoe: Prince Guillaume has found his princess. Cinderella and her prince leave the family behind. All is not lost for Clementine, however, as Benjamin returns to take her with him. And a royal wedding is held.

San Francisco Ballet Orchestra

For more than 40 years, the Grammy Award–winning San Francisco Ballet Orchestra has made the music that propels our movement. With a core group of 49 regular members that expands to 65 players for certain productions, the Orchestra’s repertory extends from classics such as Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Nutcracker to the more abstract and contemporary of ballet and symphonic works. The Orchestra’s artistry has also been featured in orchestral performances, mostly recently at a special 40th anniversary concert held at Herbst Theatre in March 2016. Our musicians are as brilliant as individual artists as the orchestra is as an ensemble. Please visit sfballet.org/orchestra for photos of each of SF Ballet Orchestra’s musicians.

SF BALLET ORCHESTRA MEMBER PATRICIA VAN WINKLE TO RETIRE says. “It’s beautiful music.” SF Ballet’s Nutcracker includes a special tradition for Orchestra members. “One of the things I’ll miss most is the Christmas carols we play on Christmas eve,” says Patty, who has played that performance dressed as Santa. “The Orchestra plays with so much emotion. My older daughter has told me I’ll be coming back for Christmas eve.”

Patty will finish her career on a metaphorical high note, playing a ballet she loves with an Orchestra that she’s convinced is playing better than ever. “We have so many young people coming in who are amazing musicians,” she says. “The Orchestra is very proud of what we do. And Cinderella© — it’s gorgeous music and everyone goes out smiling.”

Violinist Patricia Van Winkle first played for San Francisco Ballet in 1973, for the premiere of a SF Ballet Cinderella by Lew Christensen and Michael Smuin. More than 40 years later, her last performance before retiring will be Christopher Wheeldon’s Cinderella©. “It’s a nice way to go out,” she says with a smile. A Berkeley native, Patricia (known as Patty) studied music at San Francisco State University and in 1970 joined Oakland Symphony. In 1975, she joined the pick-up orchestra that played for SF Ballet and became its orchestra librarian. Later that year, SF Ballet Orchestra was founded, with Patty as a charter member. Patty, who plays second violin in the Orchestra, is now its longest-serving member. Her early years as Orchestra librarian required resourcefulness. “There were two old wooden travel crates, and that was the library,” she remembers. “I’d schlep boxes of music in my car.” To rearrange music for the Ballet, Patty had to literally cut and paste. “For Don Juan I photocopied it, cut it up, put it in the right order, photocopied it again, taped the pages together, and bound it.” She gave up the librarian post a few years later, choosing to focus on her role as a musician. “There have been a lot of nice musical moments,” she says. “Romeo & Juliet, of course, is gorgeous. Swan Lake is beautiful. And I love Nutcracker.”

First Republic Bank has once again played a partnership role with San Francisco Ballet. Our End of Season Dinner, held May 1, is a special event for SF Ballet’s most generous donors at the Artistic Director’s Council level and above. This magical evening features an elegant dinner on the War Memorial Opera House stage amid sets and props featured in the current season’s ballets. SF Ballet is honored to welcome First Republic Bank as a sponsor of this annual event. In 2015, First Republic Bank served as the Production Sponsor for the filming of a performance of Helgi Tomasson’s Romeo & Juliet for Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance (LCAM). In early March 2017, SF Ballet piloted a new in-theater viewing experience of Romeo & Juliet specifically for Bay Area high school students. The screenings were accompanied by a newly crafted curriculum designed to introduce young audiences to ballet and to Shakespeare’s tragedy, which is frequently included in the ninth grade English language arts curriculum. With the support of First Republic Bank, the impact of this Romeo & Juliet film project will now continue well beyond its initial goals.   We would also like to extend sincere thanks to First Republic Bank Chief Executive Officer and longtime SF Ballet Trustee James H. Herbert, II for his remarkable leadership and outstanding advocacy for the Ballet. “Our partnership with SF Ballet speaks to First Republic Bank’s commitment to our community,” says Herbert. “We are proud to sponsor the Ballet and its many initiatives to provide the Bay Area and beyond with masterful artistry, quality arts education, and the many priceless experiences these programs bring to audiences and students.” PROGRAM 08

Sponsor and Donor News SAN FRANCISCO BALLET WELCOMES NEW GREAT BENEFACTOR RANDEE SEIGER To commission adventurous new work, stage the classics, and develop the next generation of dancers, we rely on the generous support of donors. In 2005, we created the honor of Great Benefactor to recognize dedicated donors whose cumulative giving to SF Ballet is $1 million or more. We are pleased to acknowledge Randee Seiger as our newest Great Benefactor. Seiger has been an SF Ballet subscriber for more than 20 years. She has sponsored numerous ballets, increasing her support for some of the most daring new productions presented at SF Ballet over the last five years. This year she has dedicated her support to Myles Thatcher’s much anticipated new commission, Ghost in the Machine. She joined the SF Board of Trustees in 2014 and has served on the Marketing, Facilities, and Education Committees. In 2007, she and her late husband established the Randee and Joseph Seiger Education and Outreach Fund. This endowed fund provides annual support to the Ballet’s Education and Outreach programs now and will continue in perpetuity. As an avid dancer herself, supporting SF Ballet is very personal. “I have such an appreciation for this incredible Company” says Seiger. “The talent at SF Ballet is unmatched and the repertory is so diverse and forward-thinking. I’m thrilled to support this wonderful Company as it redefines what ballet can be in the 21st century.”

AN INVITATION TO DANCE: SAN FRANCISCO BALLET SCHOOL 2017 STUDENT SHOWCASE DINNER AND PERFORMANCE San Francisco Ballet School presents An Invitation to Dance: San Francisco Ballet School 2017 Student Showcase, May 31 to June 2, 2017. This program of special performances displays the remarkable skills of the School’s wildly talented and spirited student body at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in downtown San Francisco. Past Student Showcases have dazzled fans, families, and critics alike. This annual performance is a testament to not only the breadth and depth of the School’s extraordinary students, but also to the outstanding caliber of its faculty. Following the June 1 performance, the San Francisco Ballet Auxiliary will host a special fundraising dinner. Led by Auxiliary Chair Heather Cassidy Martin and the San Francisco Ballet School Committee, this celebratory dinner will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco. Funds from the dinner will be used to support scholarship and financial aid programs, which provide more than $1 million in support to help make training at the School accessible to all talented young artists. San Francisco Ballet School is grateful for the generous contributions and support for the Showcase provided by returning sponsors Dodge & Cox, KPMG, B|O|S (Bingham, Osborn & Scarborough, LLC), and Marc Sinykin and Kevin Osinski. For more information or to order tickets to this event, please visit sfballet.org/studentshowcase.

NEW AUDIENCES, NEW WONDERS: SENSORIUM 2017 On March 21, San Francisco Ballet welcomed nearly 3,000 people to our third-annual Sensorium. This innovative, highly interactive evening is designed to introduce classical ballet and SF Ballet to audiences ages 21 to 39 who have not been exposed to the art form or the Company. Sensorium presented a fresh and vibrant take on ballet with dynamic performances, face-to-face interactions with artists, educational activities before and after the performance, and greatly reduced ticket prices. Activities stretched from 7:30 pm to midnight. The evening kicked off with creative activities and opportunities to explore ballet: a generative-art animation installation centered around a music performance, firsthand workshop observations of the creation of haute couture ballet designs, a dance class by SF Ballet School, interactive pop-ups about tutu design and the ballet bun, and pre-performance dialogue. A onenight-only show of George Balanchine’s Diamonds and Liam Scarlett’s Fearful Symmetries included interactive discussions aimed at offering insight into the works’ artistry and meaning. Guests then mingled with SF Ballet dancers at dance parties in the basement level and in the North Box bar. We would like to thank Major Sponsor Koret Foundation for their generous support of this event. We were delighted to receive support for the 2017 Sensorium from Sunnie Evers, Sarah and Brad Greiwe, Thomas E. Horn, Christine Sherry and Lawson Fisher.

Great Benefactors Our most loyal donors are dedicated to supporting exquisite art and also understand that a contribution to San Francisco Ballet is an investment in the cultural life of the Bay Area. Our growth and evolution as a company and school is due in large part to the steadfast and generous support of patrons in the Bay Area and beyond. Corporate and Foundation Support Forward-thinking organizations understand the need to create a vibrant civic life in the places they do business. Leading corporations — local, national, and international — enhance their reputations by supporting San Francisco Ballet performances, touring, special events, and our community engagement programs. And when they do, they are able to promote their brand to an audience of opinion makers, entertain clients at performances, and receive other special benefits as part of a customized benefits package. Giving from private, family, and community foundations helps us commission new works; design and build sets and costumes; take the Company on tour; and engage our communities. To learn more, contact Corporate Giving Officer & Interim Institutional Giving Officer Amy Drew at [email protected] or 415 865 6616.

The Jocelyn Vollmar Legacy Circle Your estate gift to San Francisco Ballet enrolls you in very special company: the Jocelyn Vollmar Legacy Circle. Jocelyn Vollmar’s career extended from performing roles in SF Ballet’s first Nutcracker and Swan Lake to training generations of dancers in SF Ballet School. We created the Jocelyn Vollmar Legacy Circle to recognize and thank those individuals who, as a part of their own legacy, make an investment in the future of SF Ballet. Members gain special insight into SF Ballet and the creative process of dance through an annual celebratory luncheon and other behind-the-scenes events. Legacy gifts come in all sizes and include gifts from wills and living trusts; gifts that return lifetime income, such as charitable gift annuities; our pooled income fund; and other planned gifts. For information about Legacy Circle membership and estate gift options, please contact Planned Giving Manager Elizabeth Lani at [email protected] or 415 865 6623. Michael C. The gift of membership ensures that SF Ballet continues to dazzle current audiences and find new ones with community outreach programs. Did you know that revenue from tickets and school tuition only covers 50 percent of our expenses each year? That means that fully half of our operating budget is underwritten by tax-deductible contributions. Our Friends are equal partners in our success. To honor that commitment, we offer Friends of SF Ballet advance notice of ticket sales and exclusive invitations to dress rehearsals, lectures, and events with fellow donors and artists of the Company. Your Legacy, Our Future

Beloved as a ballerina at San Francisco Ballet from the 1940s to the 1970s, Jocelyn Vollmar has also been a longtime mentor to students at SF Ballet School. She epitomizes the strength, grace, and artistry at the heart of SF Ballet. Jocelyn has played an important role in developing a cultural legacy in this world-class city—and so can you, by including our organization in your will or trust. When you let us know that you’ve included SF Ballet in your estate plans, we’re pleased to invite you to join the Jocelyn Vollmar Legacy Circle. As a member, you’ll become a special part of the SF Ballet family and will be invited to exclusive events throughout the year.

FOR MORE INFORMATION Contact SF Ballet Planned Giving Manager Elizabeth Lani at 415 865 6623 or [email protected].

ALLEGRO CIRCLE

ENCORE!

Allegro Circle is one of our newest organizations — a small and mighty group of donors who also volunteer their networks and their professional expertise to SF Ballet. There’s a start-up mentality to the way they work, lending their support and their entrepreneurial spirit to ensure SF Ballet’s success. For more, visit sfballet.org/allegrocircle.

If you’re a young professional who loves dance and a great party, dust off the tux, get out that gown, and join our 300 plus ENCORE! members as they go behind the scenes and share their love of ballet with other young people at a wide variety of social, educational, and networking events. For more, visit sfballet.org/encore.
