Analyst’s Perception on the Value of SAP Solution Manager It is a fully fledged and credible IT operations and service management tool “„ Originally designed as an incident and problem management tool for SAP’s own customer support, the Solution Manager today, is a fully fledged and credible IT operations and service management tool especially suitable for SAP-centric environments. Since the SAP system landscape may include numerous installed SAP and non-SAP systems, SAP Solution Manager decreases and centralizes the management of these systems and end-to-end business processes. Proactive system and application monitoring as well as change management are the most widespread use cases, but customers aggressively step-up and extend the use of Solution Manager to process management, test management, incident and problem management.

Planned Innovations
Start using SAP Solution Manager innovation today on 7.1 IT Project & Portfolio Management IT Portfolio and Project Management (IT PPM) replaces SAP Solution Manager 7.1 project management capabilities in SAP Solution Manager 7.2. The functional differences between IT PPM on SAP Solution Manager 7.1 and on SAP Solution Manager 7.2 are non-disruptive and therefore manageable. Using IT PPM already on 7.1 simplifies the transition to 7.2.
Automated Blueprint Generation In SAP Solution Manager 7.2, the libraries are organized structured by the application component hierarchy. The blueprint generation report available on SAP Solution Manager 7.1 builds up a process step library structured similarly and using customer system usage.
For customers who do not have any solution documentation in place, this can serve as a foundation for building up solution documentation structured by the application component hierarchy.
Customers with an existing solution documentation can use this report on SAP Solution Manager 7.1 to evaluate the structure and to conceptually prepare for the new Process Management environment in 7.2. Please note that the project generated for evaluation should not be selected for content activation.
You can download the report from SAP note 2061626, and you can find more information in this document. © 2015 SAP SE or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved.

Prepare Maintenance Planning Maintenance Planner The next generation experience to drive simplicity for maintaining your system landscape, the Maintenance Planner replaces the Maintenance Optimizer in SAP Solution Manager 7.2 and is available optionally in SAP Solution Manager 7.1. Using the Maintenance Planner already on 7.1 simplifies the transition to 7.2. You can find more information in this blog and this document. Please note additionally that SAP S/4HANA can only be maintained and updated using the Maintenance Planner. Note: Maintenance Optimizer will be available in SAP Solution Manager 7.1 until end of maintenance

Business Process Monitoring
Key Recommendations: Today, to prepare BPMon for SAP Solution Manager 7.2 it is recommended that you validate on SAP Solution Manager 7.1, if your BPMon scope is fully covered by MAI (i.e. create and move a BPMon test solution containing your specific key aspects to MAI) a)
check for correctness and performance
b)
have key users validate that alerts & notifications are raised at expected times with expected content (use the effort also for learning by doing)
If your expectations are met, move your Productive BPMon solution(s) to MAI today on SAP Solution Manager 7.1 to save time (and potential errors at MAI migration) during the SAP Solution Manager 7.2 content activation. If your expectations are not met please contact SAP Support. Include into SAP Solution Manager 7.2 Content Activation only Solutions with productively used Business Process Monitoring (BPMon) configuration and those Solutions with BPMon configuration that is not yet used productively, but that will go live in the future (work in progress). © 2015 SAP SE or an SAP affiliate company. Minimize activation effort: “Smart document” your solution today (1/4)
Planned Innovations
Keep your business process structure simple The business process structure in SAP Solution Manager 7.1 is limited to the three levels “Scenario” – “Business Process” – “Business Process Step”. If there was an urgent need for more than three levels, a recommendation by SAP AGS best practices was to circumvent this restriction via naming conventions, e.g. “level 5 -> level 4 -> scenario”. If you are already using the described naming conventions, SAP recommends that you do not change anything in SAP Solution Manager 7.1. After the upgrade to SAP Solution Manager 7.2, the additional levels can be changed into regular folders manually. If you start using SAP Solution Manager 7.1 now and intend to use such a naming convention, please follow the guidelines in this best practice document. Please consider this activity carefully and be aware that this can create additional efforts when changing the additional levels into regular folders in SAP Solution Manager 7.2.

Minimize activation effort: “Smart document” your solution today (2/4)
Planned Innovations
Assign executables on process step level To ensure a smooth transition and reduce post-activation efforts, SAP recommends that you assign test cases and one executable (transactions / reports etc.) wherever possible on process step level. This ensures proper functioning of Test Management, Business Process Monitoring and other SAP Solution Manager capabilities.
Executable variants The Executable Variants concept in SAP Solution Manager 7.1 provided the possibility to add variants to an executable attached to a process step.
In SAP Solution Manager 7.2, Executable Variants will be represented by single process steps (one step for each variant). During the content activation process, executable variants will therefore be converted into single process steps.

Consolidating SAP attributes In SAP Solution Manager 7.2, the set of SAP attributes has been cleaned up and reduced. Therefore, the attributes listed below will not be available anymore. If you are actively using these attributes today and want to keep them after the upgrade to SAP Solution Manager 7.2, you can convert them into customer attributes during the content activation process. Structure element attributes: Industry, Component, Template ID, Custom Development, SAP Modification, SAP with Enhancement, SAP Standard, ESR Assignment Key, BPMS Assignment Key, Keywords
Assignment attributes: Keywords, Is Default, Processing Type, Ext. Test Tool relevant Document attributes: Blueprint relevant, Duration, Technical Name, Business Partner, General Documentation, End-User Documentation, Ext. Minimize activation effort: “Smart document” your solution today (4/4)
Planned Innovations
Tag your copied projects This information is only relevant for customers who regularly create copies of projects to keep a snapshot of a project. In general, this approach is not recommended, because it drastically increases the number of projects in SAP Solution Manager. The result may be that - during the content activation - projects are activated which are not necessary. Customers may thus have to invest into unnecessary post-activation cleanup activities. If you need to take project snapshots in SAP Solution Manager, then SAP recommends to label these copies as non-activation relevant via a naming convention. Project-based archiving capabilities are planned for a later functional enhancement of SAP Solution Manager 7.2.

Clean up and organize To ensure a smooth transition, clean up your existing solution documentation Clean up „dead-end“ shortcuts which point to elements that do not exist anymore
Use report AI_DIR_STRUCTURE_NO_LOGCOMP to find process steps which do not have a logical component assigned, and assign a logical component to these steps (or remove the steps) Use report SOLMAN_DOCU_VERSION_ARCHIVE * to archive up old versions of KW documents. Alternatively you can use report SOLMAN_DOCU_VERSION_DEL * to delete old versions of KW documents. This step is optional to free up database space. Please note: KW documents which are not assigned to any structure object will not be activated. After the content activation process, they will not be accessible anymore. You can use report SOLMAN_UNUSED_DOCUMENTS to find unassigned KW documents. * Implement necessary corrections with SAP Notes 1360988 and 1360436 © 2015 SAP SE or an SAP affiliate company. Ensure a smooth transition: update your managed systems Keep your managed systems up-to-date SAP Solution Manager 7.2 needs connectivity to the SAP systems in the customer landscape, for example to retrieve data for library generation and for monitoring purposes. This is technically ensured through the ST-PI and ST-A/PI packages, which are installed in the managed systems. To ensure that the technical upgrade of your SAP Solution Manager system runs smoothly, SAP recommends that the ST-PI and ST-A/PI levels of customers’ managed systems should be at the latest available version. Please see the minimally required versions below. Package Name
Required minimal SP level
ST-PI 2008/1 710
SP12
ST-PI 2008/1 740
SP02
As this may affect a high number of systems in customers’ system landscape, SAP recommends to include this update into the regular maintenance schedule or carefully plan the update before updating SAP Solution Manager to release 7.2. © 2015 SAP SE or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved.

Template Management & Global Roll-Out Template Management/Global Roll-Out Template Management provides possibilities to create re-usable process content in SAP Solution Manager 7.1. The global roll-out functionality enables the central definition of a process template and the roll-out into local projects. The template management functionality is replaced by a new concept and the strong re-use paradigm in SAP Solution Manager 7.2. Template projects can be taken over to SAP Solution Manager 7.2 and activated. If customers are heavily using the global roll-out functionality, an upgrade to SAP Solution Manager 7.2 is initially not possible. The successor for the global rollout functionality is currently planned for a future SP.

Business Blueprint — Generation of Process Step Library Available via Application “Scope and Effort Analyzer” (SP11) and ABAP Program SAP Note 2061626 (SP10) in SAP Solution Manager 7.1 Blueprint Generation In SAP Solution Manager 7.2, the libraries are organized based on the application component hierarchy. The blueprint generation report available on SAP Solution Manager 7.1 builds up a process step library structured by the application component hierarchy and using customer system usage. This can serve as a foundation for building up end-to-end processes using shortcuts. SAP recommends that customers prepare content activation carefully
Planned Innovations
Content activation is an integral part of the overall upgrade is relevant for all customers who have already created solution documentation can only be done once During the content activation process, customers must select all content that they want to use in SAP Solution Manager 7.2. All other content remains in display mode only. No content is lost during the upgrade! It is important that customers make the right selection because selecting too much results in costly post activation clean up activities selecting too little requires a costly re-documentation

Upgrade Details The upgrade from SAP Solution Manager 7.1 to 7.2 is standard Relevant for all customers:
No CRM issues this time: SAP Solution Manager 7.2 does not contain a new SAP CRM release. As we only move to a new enhancement package, the impact of the 7.2 upgrade is significantly lower than in the 7.1 upgrade If you have already adopted the Monitoring & Alerting infrastructure, then you are fine. Note that Business Process Monitoring based on the Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure (MAI) is mandatory in 7.2 The split of ABAP and JAVA stacks, and the upgrade to SAP NetWeaver 7.40 are performed automatically in a standard upgrade procedure Activation of Solution Documentation can be prepared well in advance of the upgrade Some outdated functions will be replaced. Please note the soft shift information …

General guidance on SAP Solution Manager 7.2 Ramp-Up: Customer should join Ramp-Up and evaluate the next generation of business process documentation if they have pain points in process lifecycle management and the graphical process modelling environment of SAP Solution Manager 7.1. All customers looking for a new installation should go for SAP Solution Manager 7.2 when available. Early adopters should join the Ramp-Up program of SAP Solution Manager 7.2. For restrictions in Ramp-Up see next slide. SAP Solution Manager 7.2 is the best Solution for customers implementing SAP S/4HANA. It offers unparalleled lifecycle management of configuration information for SAP S/4HANA. SAP Solution Manager 7.1 customers will reach the same level of SAP S/4HANA support when upgrading at a later time (e.g. during General Availability).
General Availability: All customers upgrading from previous versions of SAP Solution Manager should go productive between general availability of SAP Solution Manager 7.2 and end of 2017 at the latest, unless they accept customer specific maintenance. SAP Solution Manager 7.2 can also run on SAP HANA as an underlying database. This database license for SAP Solution Manager is included in your support contract. You should run SAP Solution Manager 7.2 on SAP HANA if you are standardizing your applications on SAP HANA or if you want your IT team to build up experience in SAP HANA.

SAP Solution Manager Overview of moved content

Where did it all go? Question: “Where’s my Solution, and where’s my project in the 7.2 system?” Answer: It’s still there! SAP Solution Manager 7.2 comes with a dramatically improved solution documentation capability. After the upgrade from 7.1 to 7.2, a content activation process moves existing project and solution content into the new project and solution documentation areas. In short, your project and solution content has been moved to: •
Solution
•
Project Management
•
Change Control Management area (if applicable)
This presentation is a simple guide to where you can find your 7.1 projects and solutions in SAP Solution Manager 7.2.
