Title of Project: Evaluation for Complications in Obese Children and Adolescents Identified by School-Based BMI Screening Program Principal Investigator: Ying Chang M.D. MPH Other Investigators: Lisa Bailey-Davis M.A. R.D. You are being invited to volunteer to participate in a research study. Research studies include only people who voluntarily choose to take part. This summary explains information about this research. You are urged to ask questions about anything that is unclear to you. We are asking you to be in this research to understand the impact of providing BMI results to parents. Approximately 519 people will take part in this research study in Pennsylvania. For students’ health, the Pennsylvania Department of Health has recommended that schools share Growth Screening (body mass index or BMI) results with parents of all students. Your child’s school is working with the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to understand how this information has helped you, your child, and your family. Fathers, mothers, or legal guardians are invited to participate in an anonymous survey. The survey consists of twenty-one questions regarding your students’ health and BMI data. Your participation in the survey is voluntary and you are free to skip any questions that you would prefer not to answer. The survey results will be used to improve programs that promote healthy eating, physical activity and services for weight-related health issues, including diabetes.
