Students in the International Business Management program at Algonquin College have the opportunity to learn an in-depth understanding of versatile international management skills and knowledge for the growing demand for International Trade Professionals. This program show you how to develop and implement the following plans: International marketing Research Management

Graduates of this program may find employment opportunities in a wide range of international fields including government, banking, financial services, industry, logistics, supply chain management, marketing, sales, management consulting, entrepreneurship and administration. A strong emphasis is placed on connecting students with the prospective employers and professionals in the International Business community.

This one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program provides an in-depth understanding of versatile international management skills and knowledge required to prepare students for the growing demand for International Trade Professionals. Both Canadian and foreign importers and exporters require trained professionals to meet the increasing volume of crossborder traffic around the globe. Graduates meet the academic requirements required to apply for the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation granted by the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT). One year of relevant work experience is also required to qualify for this designation. Using a hands-on approach, students learn to investigate, analyze, and manage business activities at home and abroad. They also acquire the practical skills required to prepare and implement such documents as international marketing, research and management plans. Students identify international partners and develop global networks and understand complex international regulatory and legal issues. They consider finance options and receivable collections, overcome language and cultural barriers, as well as work with security requirements related to international logistics and travel. Graduates may find employment opportunities in a wide range of international fields including government, banking, financial services, industry, logistics, supply chain management, marketing, sales, management consulting, entrepreneurship and administration. Employers in these areas seek graduates who can readily contribute to their global initiatives. This program is well-suited for students who: Are interested in foreign cultures and globalization. Are inquisitive and analytical. Are planners and like putting plans into action. Possess good communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills. Possess strong organizational skills and work well under tight time constraints. Are outgoing, energetic and motivated to lead.

Graduates have the required skills that may enhance their opportunities in securing employment at a managerial level in public and private sectors globally. The pending CITP designation provides students with a unique opportunity that further enhances their employability.

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

1. Conduct an environmental scan* to evaluate the impact of world issues on an organization`s international business opportunities.

2. Conduct, evaluate and present market research to support an organization`s international business decision-making.

3. Manage the preparation of documents and the application of procedures to support the movement of products and services in the organization`s global supply chain.

4. Evaluate the impact of statutory and regulatory compliance on an organization`s integrative trade* initiatives.

5. Develop and implement strategies to negotiate effectively within various cultural environments and to address the impact of cultural differences on an organization`s integrative trade initiatives.

6. Develop and present an international marketing plan, and evaluate sales strategies that support an organization`s integrative trade initiatives.

7. Identify and interpret relevant international financial documents, and evaluate financial strategies that support an organization`s integrative trade initiatives.

8. Analyze the impact of an organization`s integrative trade* initiatives on its human resources management strategies, policies, and practices.

9. Develop and present an international business plan.

Programs at Algonquin College are delivered using a variety of instruction modes. Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode which combines classroom sessions with online learning activities. Effective communication is key to any interaction. Significant amount of information is exchanged between project participants, stakeholders and customers. Students explore the role of effective communications in a project environment, and manage the flow of communication by formulating and evaluating communication plans. Students examine ways to establish and sustain relationships with project stakeholders, collect and retrieve information, as well as analyze various communication models, technology, tools and techniques needed for effective communication.

ECO1100 World Issues and Economical/Political Perspective

From the economic and geographic point of view, the world is currently in a state of flux. As world monetary systems become integrated into the economies of sovereign nations, it is important to recognize, analyze and understand the financial interdependence that affects contemporary societies. Students examine such international economics issues as barriers to trade, foreign investment, exchange rates and global financial markets. They also explore geographic regions of the world, especially their political boundaries, resources, populations and membership in trade blocks.

MGT1101 Global Business

The context in which international trade takes place, as well as the opportunities and challenges it presents for business, have changed dramatically. Given this rapid, ongoing change, global business professionals must have a clear understanding of the effects of globalization and the opportunities it affords. Students learn the major components of international trade, including marketing, market-entry strategies, supply chain management, trade finance and legal aspects of international global business management. In addition, they discuss ethical issues faced by today's businesses, such as codes of conduct for international trade professionals, human rights, ethical practices, diversity in the workplace and sustainability. The cultural aspects of international business, as well as and the importance of technology in facilitating international trade are explored.

MGT1102 International Research

Global business cannot be conducted in an information vacuum. Knowledge and information are truly powerful elements of international trade and are the basis upon which all strategies are built. The importance of well-planned and efficient research for guiding company activities is addressed. Students develop research objectives compatible with corporate business goals and apply appropriate data-gathering techniques. They explore a variety of methods for analyzing and presenting research data effectively in order to identify and evaluate international opportunities.

MGT1103 International Market Entry Strategies and Partnerships

Armed with the knowledge and intelligence from market research, companies can analyze various markets to determine which offer the greatest chances of success. This leads to the choice of entry strategy. Students prepare a comprehensive assessment of international market-entry options for the export of products or services and optimal market-entry strategies. They assess barriers to market entry, differentiate between market-entry strategies, recommend potential international partners through consultation and analysis of strengths and weaknesses and negotiate partnership agreements. Integrative trade, the combining of exporting, importing, sourcing and investment strategies within the organization, has also required companies to consider foreign investment but this can open new risk factors. Foreign Direct Investment is presented as an alternate entry option which adds to the requirement of understanding risk and mitigation strategies.

MGT1104 Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics

Using cutting-edge analysis of critical issues in the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR), students examine the ethical challenges of integrating CSR strategies and sustainable business practices into mainstream corporate culture from an international perspective. They identify personal and professional core ethical beliefs, current practices of CSR in the workplace at home and abroad, along with their global impact. In addition, students critically assess corporate culture, change management issues, ethical leadership and decision making.

International Finance

Traditional business finance courses focus on the math of finance, providing learners with the skills to conduct net present value calculations and sensitivity analysis, among other functions. Students are provided with the skills necessary to ensure companies can finance these activities and are paid for their international trade transactions. Students learn the financial methods and tools used to conduct successful international business transactions. They discuss currency, commercial and country risks, risk-mitigating techniques, as well as their legal implications. Students acquire a broad overview of the nature and scope of trade finance - in particular, the 'Four Pillars': payment facilitation, risk management, financing and provisions of information related to a transaction. Finally, students consider the impact of technology on trade finance, as well as the importance of export credit agencies and international financial institutions international business. Prerequisites: MGT1101 and MGT1102 and MGT1103

LAW1200 International Trade Law

Students become familiar with the basic legal principles of carrying on international business. Using material presented from both Canadian and international perspectives, they explore the legal implications of international business activities and discuss the legal aspects of intellectual property, competition and antitrust laws, public trade law and ecommerce in international business. Prerequisites: MGT1101 and MGT1102 and MGT1103

MGT1201 International Project Management and Leadership

International businesses are turning to project management to meet and achieve their strategic and operational goals. Students learn the basic principles of project management related to global firms, as well as the essential components of project planning, organizational methodologies and structures specific to project needs, control measures and processes required when managing for project success, the critical role of leadership and power and the influence of project managers in their relationships with various stakeholders in the project. They learn how to use project management tools, such as Microsoft Project software.

MGT1202 International Supply Chain Management

Globalization is responsible for the creation of the modern supply chain, global value chains, and the need for companies and countries to engage in integrative trade. Supply chains and logistics considerations have crucial financial implications and are elements where costs can be reduced and customer value added. More importantly, country-sourcing concerns and the need to consider reverse supply chains have become increasingly important now that customers are more aware of global purchasing options. Students gain insight into global supply chain activities including production and inventory management processes, as well as regulatory and security requirements. They become familiar with the key elements of a logistics plan and how it impacts the business plan, the advantages and disadvantages of various transport modes, the roles and value of outside service providers in a supply chain strategy, order processing, inventory management and universally adopted supply chain terminology, such as Incoterms. Prerequisites: MGT1101 and MGT1102 and MGT1103

MGT1203 International Business Management

Knowledge of the various aspects of international business is incomplete if a global business professional is not able to assimilate, analyze, and formulate a sustainable business model that carries the organization through the challenges of the global marketplace. This course provides the capstone set of skills required for real global business success. Students acquire the ability to pull together knowledge and skills across the trade spectrum to develop an international business plan demonstrating their comprehension of the scope, breadth and integration of international business practices. They discuss the factors which ensure profitable entry into the import and export business, as well as ways to incorporate resources to capture qualified international business opportunities. Finally, students discuss "The Manager as Leader" and the importance of leadership skills in international trade. Prerequisites: MGT1101 and MGT1102 and MGT1103

MKT1200 International Marketing

Building on traditional marketing concepts, this course explains how to take a product or service into the global market. Students investigate the importance of market intelligence, international marketing opportunities and strategies, the creation of sustainable competitive advantage, the development of marketing plans to achieve business targets, and the implementation and coordination of international marketing activities for products and services. They become familiar with the principles of marketing functions and the distinctions between domestic and international marketing. Students also discuss how to adapt and develop products and services for foreign markets incorporating the sales and marketing activities required to be successful in target markets. Prerequisites: MGT1101 and MGT1102 and MGT1103
